i actually think that the best religion FOR ME (I think diversity is good, so I'm not trying to convert anyone)

is a religion that doens't believe in a god, but art, and science, and REAL happiness. I also would take the church community aspect of Christianity and add it to this religion (cuz I'm a collectivist), and focus on betterment of the community and not greed/individualism.

I pray for everyone who needs prayer. I have asked my family to pray for mig, and they are doing that. I care for mig and his soul very much.

Religion aside, I think you have some real issues man, seriously. Get yourself checked, go see a doctor.

What the HELL was that for?! For the love of all that is holy, He gives a crap and you tell him to GO SEE A DOCTOR?!?!

The Uncaused Cause Argument for believing the universe had a cause, also known as the kalam cosmological argument.

An Argument for the Faith by Glenn Miller. In Glenn's words, "a slow-paced, low-key argument for the faith" that outlines his own reasons for belief

From what I know of the subject, general psych doesn't seem that hard, except for the history of the science.

I'm with you there. I'm technically agnostic about god but then I'd have to be agnostic about loads of other unfeasible supernatural beings, it's just not practical. Therefore I'm kind of atheist by default.

I think we both know there are opinions on both sides. I could give you links to the books of Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. The purpose of this sort of thing is for us posters to personally debate. BTW, this thread is still going? wow

Try imagining a 15 year-old defending biology when all he knows on the subject is based on London's Big Book of Birds, and you'll have a faint idea of what it is like to read Dawkins on theology.;)

As for Sam Harris, who?

Im just thinking here, christianity had the whole might of Rome persecuting it. Rome, the greatest country of the ancient world. possibly the most powerful country to ever exist on this planet of ours, and Christianity survived for 2000 years as history's most prevalent religion.

That doesn't mean anything to you?

The Babylonians were, at first, persecuting the Isrealites for their belief in God. Back then, Babylon was the most powerful empire.

Technically, it has more to do with Judaism, but Christianity came from that when Jesus died.

I think Dawkins is excellent on arguing for Atheism. I've never met a Theist who could debunk many of his arguments in fact.espoac

Two books have written debunking most, if not all, of his claims.:|

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawkins'_God:_Genes,_Memes,_and_the_Meaning_of_Life

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dawkins_Delusion%3F

Dawkins has also flat-out said that evolution REQUIRES Atheism, which is a completely blind statement.

Finally, read this review that happily inspired my sig-quote: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n20/eagl01_.html

hey silver dragon, I was thinking about buying that book mere christianity by CS lewis, how is that book?

mig_killer2

Well, let's see:

It converted Francis Collins,

It's my most favorite piece of literature by my favorite author,

It's behind most of my reasonings in religious debates,

and more.

However, there is one thing about it which you may or may not like, depending on your view of morality. Here's the Amazon:

Try imagining a 15 year-old defending biology when all he knows on the subject is based on London's Big Book of Birds, and you'll have a faint idea of what it is like to read Dawkins on theology.;)

DrummerJon

He teaches at Oxford...I think he knows a little more than a 15 year old who read 1 book. I'm not defending his personality (he is kind of a dick) but he is a very smart guy.

When it comes to evolution, I agree. But with theology, my analogy doesn't do him justice.

How do you explain how Jesus' life and characteristics are observed in religious figures thousands of years before Jesus?

1. Figures such as. . .?

2. Atheists believe in cosmic coincidences that defy all mathematical odds, why not this one?

3. Odds are, my life and characteristics are similar to ones by other religious stories; Does that mean I don't exist?

4. If you're trying to disprove the existence of Jesus, stop. It is barely contested that He existed, and saying He didn't is like saying Mother Teresa didn't exist.

I see Silver Dragon is still arguing things he has little clue about. Tell me, have you actually read Dawkin's book are are you again using an argument from ignorance?

well yes he is bad at the study of god, but even thoguh I don't know all of his positions on every issue I tend to agree with him on alot of things. Obviously we agree on atheism but I'v read some of his quotes and they tend to be spot on. For example..."You don't have to be a scientist - you don't have to play the bunsen burner - in order to understand enough science to overtake your imagined need and fill that fancied gap. Science needs to be released from the lab into the culture."

Thats a completely random quote, but I havn't read a dawkins quote that made me go 'whoa this guys nuts"
