According to Forbes some of the 10 most dangerous countries around the world are Somalia, Iraq, Russia, etc. Not for nothing but how about the U.S? More than a million guns are own by citizens all over the U.S. We have the most number of people behind bar at over 2 million and rising. 7 million people are either in jail, on probation, or parole. blacks and hispanics account for 75% of the prison population. What the hell should we do about prisons being overcrowded and prisoners literally getting released from prison because of this? this is a quote from wiki. "They do this by placing hundreds of bunk beds next to one another, in these gyms, without any type of barriers to keep inmates separated. In California, the inadequate security engendered by this situation, coupled with insufficient staffing levels, have led to increased violence and a prison health system that causes one death a week. This situation has led the courts to order California to release of 27% of the current prison population, citing the Eighth Amendment's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment.[42] The three-judge court considering requests by the Plata v. Schwarzenegger and Coleman v. Schwarzenegger courts found California's prisons have become criminogenic as a result of overcrowding."

1. decriminalize and legalize certain drugs (another debate for another topic) 2. put non-violent offenders to work for society in half-way houses 3. get rid of the 3-strike rule for 'victimless crimes'

Sounds fine to me. Many of the people going to prison dont really deserve to be in there. I find the claim that prison is an effective form of rehabilitation as rather suspect. Besides, as a % of our population, the US has one of the highest incarceration rates.

Can't disagree with anything here... I'd add just letting people who've served 75% or more of sentences of over 35 years go...

In the short term, I guess you just gotta build more prisons. Raise taxes.

Stop locking up non-violent drug offenders who would be in rehab instead of prison if they were rich.

I guess you could remove some of their less important limbs. You could also create cheap mass prisons by just using open caste mines as dumping pits.

worlock77

To my thinking, this would reduce a great deal of crime, not simply because people will be doing the same things can not getting charged, but because criminal enterprises associated with drugs will dissolve. Huge rackets exist because of the drug trade. If someone can grow pot or snort cocaine legally, then these rackets no longer have a reson to exist, because people can call the police if threatened with violence over their drugs.

See, there you go; no sarcasm there.

Exactly. Something like 70% of the people in prisons are there for non-violent drug offenses. Murderers, rapists, child molesters, etc account for a tiny percentage of the prison population.

The problem is that the prison industrial complex would never allow this to happen. Most of the prisons in this country are run by corporations, and there's too much money to be made in locking up drug offenders. If you thinned the prison population out by 70%, the government would just be locking up real criminals and would have no reason to subcontract out to these companies.

Most of my perspective comes from a Canadian one... and here in Manitoba, we have a problem keeping violent or repeat offenders behind bars because judges just can't find room for them in jail (several serial car thieves who lead police on dangerous cases are being released on probation only to reoffend days later) or are too ignorant to really do anything (recently a judge sentenced a rapist to probation because the woman "was asking for it").

There are definitely some victimless crimes in the US that shouldn't be punished by jail (community service is a much better solution for non-violent offenders), but Canada needs more jails... MANY more jails.

Even if true, most people find value in human life just for its own sake. We don't eliminate the mentally handicapped, even though they're not particularly useful.

EDIT: And I see you said you were joking. Never mind, I guess.

Ray Liotta said it best...

All they got from Paulie was protection from the guys trying to rip them off. That's what it's all about. That's what the FBI could never understand. What Paulie and the organization does is protect people who can't go to the cops. That's it. They're like the police department for wiseguys.

And an incompetent judge problem (at least here in Manitoba; we've had three major bench judges caught up in scandal in the last year). But then again, the NDP are on their way out, so all will eventually get better.

I'd say it speaks more about the unevenness of the US legal system than it does about race. Blacks busted for drugs get prison. Whites busted for drugs get rehab.

Well, for one we need to fix the education system at a lower age. The statistics are on the side of the educated: not as many of them go to jail. To be brutally honest, if we're going to throw money down the drain, I'd much rather that money go to keeping kids in good schools as opposed to paying for their room and board in the pen.

Second, we need to legalize marijuana, or at least decriminalize it. It's really the only sensible thing to do at this point.

Sorry, but I doubt those people go to prison just because 'laws are racist' and white people just get a free pass.

How about we fix our society so that a huge portion of our population does not feel as though that have to participate in illegal activities to make a decent living.

Then why does crack cocaine (more likely to be used by blacks) carry harsher penalties than power cocaine (more likely to be used by whites)?
