I can't tell how close it was to the camera. So it looks like it could be a couple centimetres long or a foot and a half.

Awwwwww! It's just a cute littly katydid Andi! They're pretty mild-mannered little critters. Just set it on your porch and let it do its thing or put in in a jar with holes and keep it for a few days to play with and feed and then let it go.

...I miss finding cute bugs like that. :(

It's a grasshopper. Either that, or a "katydid", which is essentially just a grasshopper.

Be careful though. These grasshoppers aren't exactly maneaters, but they have some strong mandibles, and can chew the **** out of you. So if you decide to catch it...don't let it bite you.

There's actually a lot of variety to the katydid family. Sure way to tell...does it have incredibly long antennae?

Yes. You've heard about locusts, right? Well, locusts are just grasshoppers. And they fly over thousands of miles in huge swarms, eating everything they see.

There are lots of different kinds of katydids.

Just like how there are lots of different kinds of mantids. But none of the mantids that you see in the USA look like an orchid mantid or a dead leaf mantid.

But nevertheless, the picture shown looks A LOT like the picture that you posted. So it's a katydid. Not quite the same species, but it's still a katydid. If you see an elephant trunk snake, you can still recognize it as a snake even if you've never seen that species of snake before.

I haven't seen one of those in awhile, but i don't think it's one of those judging by the pic. I think it's just a grasshopper and yes some of them can fly.

I'm actually sort of confused about the difference between grasshoppers and katydids myself.

Like, I'm pretty sure that all katydids are still technically grasshoppers. But I'm not entirely aware of what specifically makes a katydid a katydid. Like, around here, we have grasshoppers that look like katydids, but I've never seen them classified as katydids. They're always classified as grasshoppers.

So...I'm not entirely sure what makes a katydid a katydid, rather than just a grasshopper that looks like a katydid.

But in any case, it's still a grasshopper. And it might or might not be a katydid, depending on what specific requirements must be met before it is considered a katydid.
