What Was It About Dragon Ball Z That Was So Awesome?

out of all the anime kid shows of the 90's, it seems DBZ is the one that resonates with multiple generations and is still going strong to this day. its funny because I used to make fun of DBZ back in elementary school until one of my friends at the time showed me the japanese version of one of the movies and i was hooked right away. it was so different and insane compared to the american cartoons of the day. i credit DBZ for sparking my interest in anime (and foreign media in genral really). what was it about DBZ? the battles? the characters? something about it was just awesome. it was one of those animes that a 5 year-old and a 50 year-old could get into. it had that appeal

its cause all the characters are cool and its such a good concept. when i look at naruto i have 0% interest in watching it. energy beams and fighting is way cooler, and the storytelling is amazing minus all the shiity fillers.hadoken

DBZ rocks. All the haters always tend to like super dumb animoo about noobs with weak emotions. DBZ is all about teh action and manlyness.

It is the best animoo ever, all others suck.

I was a massive fanboy of the show, but as I grew older, I started to see it for it's simplicity. The characters were one dimensional, the plot was thin, and the show moved at a snail pace.

By today's standards, its a terrible show, but for the 80's it offered a unique formula that simply wasn't present in American TV. No other cartoon/anime at the time delivered such a unique art styIe, fast paced action and over-arching storylines. I would never watch the show now, but I would welcome a reboot with open arms.

Being 13 at the time was probably a big factor for me...

The reason DBZ is so loved and still held so high by people, is becuz it was the fisrt anime for most people (talking about the west). Hundreds of millions of kids watched in and their minds were blown. Compared to the western cartoons, the anime DBZ was just hardcore (blood/violence)and so freaking good that in sparked hundreds of millions of kids interest in anime and Japan. There have been studies about why teens and young adults in the west became so interested in Japan was becuz of the anime shows from the late 80s and 1990s. Now everyone is obsessed with Japan, Japanese culture, kids wanting to move to JP just becuz they like anime, kids trying to learn Japanesse, and all thosejapan obsessed wierd kids you see in the internet.

DBZ was so good that tonz of other animes copied elements from it.

In the west, there was nothing like DBZ when it came to action and character developement. The battles, the character, and if you grew up with the Funimation version it was also the music and voice acting that made it so great. DBZ is one of the main reasons why anime is so big world wide and why no body cares about comic books and western super heroes anymore.

There has never been any other anime like DBZ. It was original and it wasnt cliche or predictable.

I was young and it was the first anime I got into(before it came to the US)...

I give it a 5 on a scale from 1 to 10, as Shonen standards go. It set the bar as far as action/fighting animes go. It's average at best.

Storywise it's downright stupid and the more I see it - the more I get mad about how terrible it got as the series continued. It should've ended with the Freeza saga, then the Cell saga was enjoyable but the BS throughout angers me...

...everything after that sends me into a nerd rage that I try to avoid.

It was just fighting. The love stories and even the Dragon Balls themselves mostly took a backseat. It was just bad ass fighting all the time and the angrier they got the stronger they got, like ADHD kids.cheese_game619
