I didn't like the Great Gatsby. Although that's probably because my teacher was an idiot and ruined it.
Mercy Among the Children is pretty good so far, but as for something I've completed I'd say To Kill A Mockingbird. Also, it wasn't required but it was an option for one of our essays, but the Kite Runner was really good too.
I didn't realize plays counted as books, so I'll add Macbeth.

It's a pretty hard book to teach but once you get into it, you realize how amazing it is. My favorites are between The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, Othello, The God of Small Things, Lord of the Flies and 1984. Probably some others since i really enjoyed several of the required readings :PBest: Sound and the Fury, As I lay Dying,A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, Once and Future King, the Things they Carried, The Tempest
Worst: Bless Me Ultima, Fahrenheit 451, Catcher in the Rye, Slaughterhouse 5 The latter two I hated because I despised Holden Caulfield and Billy Pilgrim

Our class never really got into it :P First thing he did was tell us what happens at the end, and then was surprised that we didn't know. When he told us to read up to a certain chapter, he would skip ahead and tell us what happens there are eventually we had a collective "**** this" :|
I guess I can't really blame him, since he was a student teacher, but even our real teacher agreed with us to a point.
The Things They Carried was the best I had to read. The Great Gatsby wasn't too bad, but The Scarlet Letter and Their Eyes Were Watching God were the worst books I've ever read in my life.

You lucky person. We only got to read dubliners by Joyce :( We didn't even touch Faulkner (even though that was my teacher's favorite author).Best: Sound and the Fury, As I lay Dying,A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, Once and Future King, the Things they Carried, The Tempest

o I see haven't got around to reading it yet but have read other Vonnegut.
Damn, I wish we read Dracula or The Count of Monte Cristo at my school. :(
I guess I'd have to go with Brave New World and Hamlet. I sometimes wish teachers would allow students to review books after reading them so they can decide which books they actually enjoy reading and which ones they can't stand. I get that these books are chosen because they are literally significant, but I honestly have never met anybody who actually LIKED The Scarlet Letter.
