http://news.aol.com/story/_a/un-panel-offers-dire-warming-forecast/20071117124909990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001

As early as 2020 scientists are saying cities across the world will suffer water shortages, 3 times as many floods, 250 million people in Africa will die cause of dengue fever and water shortages. By 2030 many coral reefs will dissapear and the colorful creatures that lived in them will go extinct. By 2040 the arctic sea is ice free, some cities go underwater, fierce hurricanes and extreme weathers will occur throughout the world. By 2050 the glaciers melt by 70 percent and over 100 animals face extinction. By 2070 many of the hydropower stations decrease as a result of water shortages which would mean 75 percent less electricity is produced. By 2080 4 billion people will experience water shortage and 800 million go hungry. By 2100 more than 5 million animals go extinct such as polar bears, penguins. Whats your opinion on this and what you think should be done?

I think scientists are overreacting, like they did with the whole global warming thing. They never even said that most of the solar planets are globally warming as well.

Populational control, seems to me.

I think that the "scientists" that sit around coming up with theories like these aren't really "scientists" but idiots.

We have so many diseases to cure and so many problems we are facing now yet we have "scientists" that sit around coming up with retarded theories like this? I really wanna know what the hell time machine they have that allowed them this great "insight into the future".

Every nation needs to pass laws for citizens and corporations to conserve energy and switch to nuclear power, as well as invest in electric automobiles.

Yeah, nuclear energy and I guess more hydrogen dependent cars? I'm not too familiar with ethanol and hydrogen solutions, but most of the things have been positive. Only problem is oil industries will try to offer a ton of money to buy any patent to a creative solution, then destroy it.

Maybe it's just in my head, but it seems like there already have been a lot more huge natural disasters lately.

People in Africa dying of poverty-related conditions is nothing new, sadly.

Coral reefs have been disappearing, so no surprise there, but then some places have programs in place to build new ones.

It's rather indisputable that the polar ice caps are melting, so I assume they know better than I do how much that will raise the sea level.

Over 100 animals probably already "face" extinction.

Don't really know about the hydropower thing. That one seems like maybe a stretch.

And I think trying to forecast what people will be doing and what technologies will exist by 2080 is rather futile. Twenty years ago, it would have been hard to imagine that we'd already have half of the gadgets we have today at mass market prices by now.

Never will happen for a long time, the Oil companies are the new tobbacco industry x100, their immense profit garentees nothign will change for a long time due to lobbyiests. We have a greater chance of oil running out then switching to a alternate energy source.

Ethanol isn't economy-friendly as it raises prices of almost all food in America and also is nowhere near as efficient as gasoline; you burn about one and a half times as much ethanol per mile as gasoline. I think the best thing to do with cars is to have better recycling programs for cars no longer used and to have cars that you charge up overnight and at stations--it is a huge project, but it will be well worth it in the long run.

The future involves heavy use of solar power. They are working on developing much more efficient solar panels as we speak.

Solar power is absolutely free and only requires the making of solar panels. In theory cars and whatnot can just hold charges for when nightime hits using excess energy. No more energy bills with solar panels. Solar energy is endless and pretty much the best we can get.

I must also mention that they are developing cars that run on compressed air.

If you hear someone who doesn't like the idea of nuclear power, ask them how many nuclear problems there have been in history. The answer is 2 (Chenobyl and I believe Long Island), and our technology has increased greatly since then. France's energy is roughly 80% nuclear.

Solar power is absolutely free and only requires the making of solar panels. In theory cars and whatnot can just hold charges for when nightime hits using excess energy. No more energy bills with solar panels. Solar energy is endless and pretty much the best we can get.

I doubt that companies would build solar facilities and let you use the electricity generated for free, and solar cars may be the quickest solution before we move to electric, though they would be the automotive equivalent of satellite television.

Ahem actually it is us in Michigan with all the fresh water. Funny thing is those silly people who made the dumb choice of living in deserts actually think they have the right to pipe our water to their locations! If they ever try anything of the sort I swear to God I will sabotage that pipe like no other.

These chaos predictions are always amusing to look at. Sadly, manmade global warming is a sham. Even the Weather Channel founder thinks so (the NASA director also doubts it). Not only are these people failing to mention that the other planets are warming, they're ignoring the fact that the ice in Antarctica is growing. It was hotter in the 1930's than it is today.

As I say again every enviromental agency out there that is crediable (including Bush's handpicked staff of scientists, which honestly would see to be bias towards global warming (against it)), found undeniable evidence it is happening and man is having a affect on it.

Yeah the water shortage thing is serious, regardless if you have water where you live, it could still cause a agricultural collapse, and last I checked most people don't grow their own food.

Nuclear power is most likely one of the more viable choices for power generation, although it is obviously going to be immensely difficult to curb our dependency on fossil fuels. Hydro-power, solar power and wind-power seem viable, but with current technology beyond small local projects they just do not work that well, with our current technology these things just don't scale up well.

Rising sea levels are only one concern with melting glaciers. The melting glaciers mean huge amounts of freshwater dumping ino the ocean, this disrupts ocean currents and throw off weather patterns for years (it is believed thatthe melting of an ice brdige that resulted in water from hudsons bay flowing into the ocean plunged the world into a "micro-ice age".)

I think scientists are overreacting, like they did with the whole global warming thing. They never even said that most of the solar planets are globally warming as well.

Populational control, seems to me.

sSubZerOo

Please be quiet, EVERY SCIENTIST ORGANIZATION OUT THERE, has said global warming is happening and mankind is majorly contributing to it.. Science community >>> You.

Yes, of course. scientists are above everyone, aren't they? Specialy when one scientist says "all of my friends agree with me", we all must believe right?

And note i didn't say global warming not happening. Temperatures aren't regulated for this time of the year, at least where i live. I am very aware of global arming.

Remember, if it weren't for scientists, Nikola Tesla would have changed the world in ways we never imagined. Oh, but of course, scientists are the most trustfull persons in the world, aren't they?

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Water shortages? Glad I live in Manitoba... home to the largest fresh-water lakes in the world.sSubZerOo

Ahem actually it is us in Michigan with all the fresh water. Funny thing is those silly people who made the dumb choice of living in deserts actually think they have the right to pipe our water to their locations! If they ever try anything of the sort I swear to God I will sabotage that pipe like no other.

Yes because people chose to be born in poverty in a desert like area

Yes because everyone living in desert like areas such as Las Vegas are poor....

I happen to be one of those people who doesn't believe everything I'm told by the mainstream scientific community. That, coupled with lots of evidence, means I do not believe in manmade GW.

They call this a concensus?

Yeah you know because its such a scam, to make money.. Oh wait we will ALL be losing moneyb ecause all industries, economy and people would be forced to switch over.. As I have said before EVERY I mean every crediable science organization out there from the EPA, to Bush's own group of hand picked scientists have said it is happening and we are partially caused to it...

Scam? Lol right buddy, tell me which side has more to lose and which side has more money? The Fossil fuel companies.. They have become the new tobbacco industry, they have every reason in the world ot lobby money to smere anything that would stop their astronomical profits.

What's even more worrying than the water shortage is that the rising sea level will contaminate many sources of water with salt.

Nuke's talking nonsense as usual; we have evidence of a consistant rise in levels of carbon dioxide for the last 60 years, so how he can claim things are better than in the 1930s is beyond me. the only environmental concern to change this way is air pollution.

Nuclear fusion would be the ultimate aim for renewable energy, and is not far off. It could become commercial in the next 30 years. There are a lot of problems with fission, such as nuclear waste, that still do not have an adequate solution, so is perhaps not the moste viable nuclear fuel at present.

Ha, I just saw that one of Nuke's references is FOX news. I will never take anything he says seriously ever again... wait, I never did anyway.

I would tend to agree with your statement, if it were a handful of scientists.. But its the entire community for enviromental climotology.. Tesla isn't a good example because he was in direct competition for Edison, there is no such competition here.. And the community has a hug econsensus of the matter.. I would post stats, but there is no reason to.. Look up any crediable enviromental agency about global warming.. And no I enver said scientists are above every one...

But the point stands, the science COMMUNITY has made it there prime idea of proof that global warming is happening and its partially man made.. Science runs fromt he hardest system of evaluation known to man..

You read none of those articles, did you? If you'd just open your eyes, you might actually see that you're being lied to.

And SpaceMoose, no need for that.

It boggles my mind that anyone in the world could think Global Warming isn't happening or that humans aren't causing it. You have to be a lunatic. Seriously.

Hey, nuke, perhaps if you engaged your BRAIN from time to time, you might just realise that just because you don't like something doesn't mean that its wrong and that there's a massive conspiracy.
