They're interesting in ways that people see them. I blame anime.CRS98I do too. I mean geezus look at the crazies in my sig.
There just happens to be a very large group of people in the U.S who pratically worship japanese culture. Why?
Don't ask me.
It is completely different from Western culture and that is what so many people find intriguing.foxhound_foxExactly. A lot of the Japanese are fascinated by our culture too, such as the American cowboys. It's just different and cooler to them.
they're a different culture and they have good internet so it's easily acsessable,
try searching for Russian cartoons that have been subbed in English, it's alot harder to find them comparred to japanese anime
[QUOTE="cool_baller"]They sell worn-panties in vending machines. And have 5-story p0rn stores. /threadCRS98
Seriously? I thought those were myths.
Yeah they have them there. I remember seeing this one clip of Tom Green when he went over there for a visit, he visited a panty dealer. Bunch of undergarments worn by women and high school girls.its very different and not in a bad wayJetLag123
there deffinately are bad sides, women are still looked as lower than men, you're not allowed to talk on your mobile on public transport and there's still alot of arranged marriages, i'ld still like to go there though

there are actually some bad sides...you're not allowed to talk on your mobile on public transport ...
That's actually a good thing. I hate it when people have inane conversations on their cell phones on public transportation. It's really annoying. Can't people stay off their damned cell phones for 20 minutes?
Women's public bath houses. Nuff said.
Seriously though, I think the allure of Japan is that, stereotypically, they're a nation of geeks. They're the biggest developers of videogames in the world, they find no shame in watching cartoons well into your adulthood, nor are they ashamed of adoring the scantily clad female characters.
Of course, I've never been to Japan - these are just generalisations one picks up. But to me it seems to be the geek capital of the world, and I want in.
Well, their whole society is still structured around the bushido code...which is kind of interesting.
Their cartoons are better than our cartoons.camarowu
.... their cartoons are the worst, the best cartoons were in the 80's and 90's. Now anime has taken over and its ruining all the good shows. Next thing you know you'll see anime Looney Tunes.

Exactly. For example, the Japanese make good video games, while Americans really don't do so that often :P.

Oh, you are so not dissing Wii Minigolf Player! *throws his gloves off* That's it, it's go time!!
They have some values that I share that I wish were more prominent here in America.
First off, they have more emphasis on schooling and knowledge than we do here. School is taken as a joke by MANY here, but over in Japan school is taken so seriously that it is one of the biggest reasons they have the highest suicide rate in the world as their colleges are insanely difficult to get in to.
They also keep calm and cool when they disagree or someone dissapoints and instead of mouthing off like we would here in America they will use silence as their weapon. You don't get fired alot of the time but what they will do is place you in a position by yourself and that position will also be one that isn't important and takes minimal input from you.
I also like their increased emphasis on groups rather than individuals. Here in America there is some of the most insane selfishness (Yes there are PLENTY of nice, giving people as well) and said people just drive me crazy sometimes.
Then of course there is the awesomeness of video games and anime (As well as some great music).
I also must say that their willingness to dress up crazily (cosplay) and embrace games and anime as adults is very cool.
And yes these are all generalizations but we ARE discussing their overall culture.
Not much, a lot of people who've been their come back hating it.Guiltfeeder566My friend lived there for 3 years before coming back to the states. He is like obsessed with the things Japan has that America doesn't. I want him to shut his mouth because it gets annoying from time to time.
I really don't find it great. In fact, I'm not really interested in that xenophobic collectivist sexist culture.greenprince
You got it right. I hate how most people who like anime think that Japan is some mystical land full of candy canes and unicorns.
They are xenophobic. They don't really appreciate immigrants living in their country. An unofficial motto there is 'Keep Japan Japanese.' I had an art teacher who lived there for 10 years and he always felt discriminated against.

I experience the same discrimination. Considering I lived in Canada for so long, I realized that standing out in public in Japan is considered offensive. I seen this situation where these Japanese guys were sexual harassing a women and I told those guys to back off but yet the majority of the people in the subway were looking down on me instead of them. You can't draw attention to your self and many public hotels, nightclubs and other public attractions don't accept you if you're not Japanese. I only got into a nightclub once because they thought I was Japanese ( I'm Filipino decent ) and asked me to leave when they realize I can only speak English.Their collectivist ideas they based off are only also, they judge by group instead of as an individual. I hated it and I never want to spend one moment in Japan again if I had choice to go somewhere else.
