It is completely different from Western culture and that is what so many people find intriguing.foxhound_fox

Same with other cultures. The TC just sounds ignorant.

[QUOTE="cool_baller"]They sell worn-panties in vending machines. And have 5-story p0rn stores. /threadCRS98

Seriously? I thought those were myths.

My sources say it is true.

[QUOTE="quiglythegreat"][QUOTE="ElectronicMagic"]That's simple, it's completely different then Western cultures. I find all of Asia's cultures to be quite fascinating, there is just something mystique about the whole region.ElectronicMagic

...why Japan...?

When I think of Japan, I think of the future. Just images of Japanese cities makes me think about how hi-tech everything looks over there. It also has great appeal due to the fact that they have some great bands over there, sweet anime and manga and the only reality TV shows that I care to watch these days. But like I said, it's not just Japan that interests me. China and South Korea are right up there next to Japan on where I'd like to go on holiday if I ever get the chance.

It's clear to me that you need to actually learn a thing about Asian culture. The fact that you have such a graceful opinion of all of those countries suggests to me that you have a near-mystical view of what these countries are like.

Many others have covered many of the bad aspects of Japan, namely xenophobia. And while I liked the time I went there, it's not nearly as great as you think.

South Korea? Why would you want to go to a country that believes in "one-blood?" As in, Koreans should only marry Koreans and foreigners are basically interlopers? Since I haven't actually been to Korea, I'll stop with that.

But China? Good god, please learn about this country before you say you want to come here. Why on Earth anybody would want to come to a revenge-based society I'll never know. It's great if you get excited by the prospect of watching people spit everywhere and blow snotrockets, or if you enjoy watching little children going to bathroom pretty much everywhere. And still in most parts of China, be prepared to be stared at, pointed at, called a laowai (foreigner...though it has a slightly rude connotation...more like 'outsider'), and then have everyone try to rip you off at any possible opportunity. I can keep going on with all of the terrible things in China, but then I'll just get myself worked up before bed.

To answer the TC original question, here's my answer: it's two things. The first is anime/video games- if they're interested in that, they assume the rest of Japan is equally as cool. But I think more importantly is that Japan feels different than Western culture but is actually quite similar. There's some culture shock, sure, but most things about day-to-day living or generally something that an American or European would be comfortable with. But they feel "enlightened" by the many small differences.
