Some aspects are interesting, but I don't find the culture special at all.
As said they're very xenophobic and are misogynists. They don't liked individuality at all, which has caused them a great deal of trouble technology wise. They also do not like to have a lot of responsibility management wise. That is the number one issue their expatriates have trouble on foreign soil, they don't want to be in charge of other employees.
China is going to be what Japan was in the 70s and 80s.
I see their culture as much more richer than any other single nation culture.Pessu
How so? They threw much of it away at the end of the 19th century and addoped western standards. Their history is very rich, but their current culture is rather poor. The only interesting aspect that is left of it is the bushido.
You could say the same thing about the British culture, but thats gone down the pan lol
I would love to go and vist Japan. I think they have more respect than other cultures. Plus they don't have so much of a crime rate.
I've been there twice so far and one thing I really like about it is how beautiful the country is. I have been to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nikko, and Miyajima, and each place is very different even though the country is so small. One thing I wasn't particularly fond of was how crowded the cities were. I knew what to expect, but it's still very different from what I am used to. As far as culture goes, there's the good and bad like every culture. They are very sexist and their family "structure" is pretty bad IMO. Fathers avoid contact with their wife & kids during the week and go out drinking with their co-workers on many nights. Sounds fun I know, but I think it's pretty messed up. The xenophobia isn't always bad, but also isn't always good either. I can kind of understand how they want to keep Japan "Japanese", but sometimes it goes too far. While there, I was never once discriminated against and everyone was extremely polite to me. I like how polite they were, even a lot of random people on the street. Every time I used the Japanese language, they would compliment me on how good my Japanese was even though I know it is terrible and I'm sure they knew it was terrible as well. Oh, and I must say they have the nicest police officers I've ever seen before in my life, by far.
So yeah... that's just a couple things I noticed in the few weeks I've spent there.
It is completely different from Western culture and that is what so many people find intriguing.foxhound_foxtheir emphasis on 'success' kind of makes me think it's not quite that different, which is why I don't like it. with your explanation, India and Tibet would be wildly popular as well.
[QUOTE="greenprince"]I really don't find it great. In fact, I'm not really interested in that xenophobic collectivist sexist culture.JohnnySN1P3R
You got it right. I hate how most people who like anime think that Japan is some mystical land full of candy canes and unicorns.
They are xenophobic. They don't really appreciate immigrants living in their country. An unofficial motto there is 'Keep Japan Japanese.' I had an art teacher who lived there for 10 years and he always felt discriminated against.
I once knew a dude who was BORN in Japan to a Japanese woman. But there was such shame that he was a half-breed that she put him up for adoption so that she wouldn't have to be reminded of her affair with a lesser mongrel foreigner. And then when this dude spent the first few years of his life growing up in an orphanage, he wasn't even allowed to play with the other kids, because he wasn't pure-blooded. Luckily a visiter to Japan saw how bad his prospects for the future were, and got him the hell out of that country.

I hate anime with a passion.
I like japanese culture because of of many things. The way they view things, ethics and discipline, they actually respect other people unlike western countries, martial arts, samurai, super-natural nack for technology.
you mean, the way they respect their fellow Japanese?I hate anime with a passion.

How much anime have you watched? I mean are you one of those "I saw a few shonen animes and think I know all" people?I hate anime with a passion.

For the Japanese I'm sure it's great.....as to why others worship the ideal of the culture...no clue. I'm happy with my culture.LJS9502_basic
What's your culture? The Cure? They're British, not American (I think :P). I'll stick with the Black Mages, thank you :P.

The Cure is a band (English by the way)...not a culture.:|That's simple, it's completely different then Western cultures. I find all of Asia's cultures to be quite fascinating, there is just something mystique about the whole region.ElectronicMagic...why Japan...?

When I think of Japan, I think of the future. Just images of Japanese cities makes me think about how hi-tech everything looks over there. It also has great appeal due to the fact that they have some great bands over there, sweet anime and manga and the only reality TV shows that I care to watch these days. But like I said, it's not just Japan that interests me. China and South Korea are right up there next to Japan on where I'd like to go on holiday if I ever get the chance.
what about, say, India? they have very different values as well, even different from Japan's in a lot of ways. quiglythegreatIndia really doesn't get the love it deserves in the western world. Especially since it serves as the foundation for our own religions, culture, and language. People should take the time to study sanskrit.
I really have a hating for the people at my high school who take japanese just because they watch anime. They're obsessed with the culture, when they don't actually know anything about it, they just like their cartoons (Which most aren't even that great, they're just annoying)
And this isn't Japan, but at least in South Korea (But I wouldn't be suprised if Japanese culture was into this now) the in thing right now is the guys to dress as girls, and vice versa. Not attractive. And their music sucks.
However, they have great food, and epic hair. That's about it really.
Actually no, they're all crazy racist towards white people there.

The only time I was in Japan was when I was stationed at Okinawa.I would visit Japan, but never live there.
I just like the culture and entertainment from Japan.

so why the recognition for Japan and not India? India is just as different from Western culture, if not more so. quiglythegreatAs I just pointed out, India isn't "different' so much from America as they are "similar but seperate". They have the same cultural, economic, and political institutions we do. Heck, India was the birth place of the modern western world. That and I just think it has to do with exposure. Maarf Karjo. :D

I don't really care about Japan at all, most of their video games I hate, I could care less about anime, I just don't find an appeal in the things everyone else seems to.

They really need to start thinking about immigration, or they're going to be screwed by the end of the century.
There is nothing that special about their culture at all, i lived in Tokyo for 2 years and people are just obsessed with western culture its quite sad actually. Plus the majority of people are very seedy and quite anti-social. Maybe thats because i was living in Tokyo but still i found it to be quite uncomfortable.
Because, we just win :).
You guys are right though, they're xenophobic, me being Japanese, even looking like one of the normal Japanese teenagers there (with the "Anime" hair and such), I'd still be discriminated against, just because I've lived a majority of my life in the U.S....so technically I'm not "Japanese" to them :?. Anime makes everything over there seem great, but tbh, that country gets pretty crazy, the people/society...are just kind of freaks sometimes -_-.

I think that is heavily reflected in there culture as well for example their films, art & books. Some of that stuff is real ****** up!

Yes.... Sometimes Japanese people get too far away. Too excentric... BTW. Asian sexayness rule!
i have liked the japanese culture for a long time now, way before i got into anime. Although i wouldnt call myself an expert. As much as i want to visit the country, i wouldnt want to live there (well i might change my mind when i go), i wouldnt know the language and the Japanese arnt very comfortable with foreigners living there, among several other things.
and besides, its interesting because it is so different to western culture. Look at the buildings and the history and you can already see what i mean.
