That said, I agree with some of the angst raised about Dream Theater and Nightwish, not so much Sonata Arctica and other power metal bands. Dream Theater is hackneyed; they've been living off of their riffs from Scenes From a Memory by recycling the content into their new releases. And it's obvious! They don't even change the tempo. At least bands like ZZ Top try to do something different with their recycled riffs; what Dream Theater has done is lazy and inexcusable.
Nightwish is not metal anymore. Anyone who I have demoed their post-Tarja stuff too says it sounds like Abba or Ace of Base. And my friends aren't metal-heads. LordQuorthon
Notice how I didn't say anything bad or good about Dream Theater. I said they did not kick ass. Music can be good and not kick ass. I love Queen, and they rarely kicked ass. Pink Floyd are a gret band who didn't really kick ass.
Motorhead and Venom, like them or not, kick ass. That doesn't make them better or worse than Rush, for example, they just kick more ass, they rock harder, they are heavier, faster and more aggressive. That is not a prerequiste for being good, but it does help quite a lot if you want to play metal.
And don't disrespect the genuine power metal bands; they keep the classical side alive. The cornerstone of what metal has become today is not so much the blues that Sabbath started off with, but the classical that Judas Priest introduced - or the punk that Anthrax pushed - so to say that that doesn't kick ass is pure fallacy. But yes, post-Scenes From A Memory Dream Theater sucks and Nightwish is now just a pop-rock band. A symphonic one, but they don't qualify as metal. Sadly, while Tarja is still doing metal, it's this pretensious douchey baroque-classical-style sh*t. That doesn't fly; metal is a lot of the things, pretensious isn't one of them.Apathetic_Prick
When did I say that? Both Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are two of the very few true pillars of heavy metal. They are all kinds of awesome, they kick ass (they just happen to kick a little bit less ass than Motorhead) and I worship them. Now, you can't really compare Judas Priest to crap like Sonata Arctica and get away with it just like that. Helloween, Gamma Ray, Running Wild, all that good stuff, sure... But Sonata Arctica or Rhapsody? Yeah... No. Not a chance. Feel free to like them as much as you want, but going from Judast Priest to that stuff is quite a bith of a stretch, regardless of how much they claim Judas Priest influenced them
Then next time, say what you mean to say. No harm, no foul.
