It seems like such a boring genre. Probably the most boring metal genre, at least. It seems it's just playing as fast as you can, riff after riff after riff after riff. The only thrash I can tolerate are Anthrax( they tend to have fun with the **** they right) and Enemy of God from Kreator. I plan on getting an album from Kreator soon enough, but I've given a few sample listens to Slayer and have downloaded a couple Metallica albums( Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of the Puppets).

People who listen to Thrash( and preferably people who listen to it among other metal genres): what do you find appealing about it( compared to other metal and music in general)?

edit: also, I'd appreciate some song/album links if someone would like to point me in the right direction :P

People like thrash because it's easy to thrash around to.
I thought everyone knew that, ever seen a mosh pit at a thrash concert?

Thrash is pretty easy to get into. Pantera, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer all have songs that are pretty aggressive and reward you in no time.

I kinda get what you're saying -I'm a metalhead, btw, adn thrash is one of many metal genres that I like - especially about older, mid 80s-early 90s thrash. But recently I think it's become much more brutal and yet more melodic... I dunno how o describe it.. Heavier, I guess. More Slayer than Anthrax. Slayer is the really kind of thrash that I enjoy. But most recent thrash albims have been good too. Like I said, the genre has changed...

thrash metal, is the most riff oriented of the metal sub genre's. it emphasizes riffing and solo's over vocals or ambience like in death /black

here is a decent list of the albums you should listen to

EDIT: btw, anthrax is the biggest joke of a band, they arnt even thrash, they are speed metal with a power metal vocalist, and horrible music. scott ian is the biggest tool in metal.

along with the list i linked, ill suggest you listen to these 4 bands which are my favorite: megadeth (skip the albums after countdown to extinction, and come back at system has failed, the first 4 albums are the best though) Kreator ( skip the 4 albums after coma of souls and before violent revolution) Sepultura ( it turns into groove metal at chaos ad, roots isnt thrash but its good, stay away from post cavalera, its garbage) Slayer ( the best is upto seasons in the abyss, then the quality dies a bit, christ illusion is the best post seasons album)

It's an aggressive guitar based style of music. It also gave double kick base drumming a home. It was invented by guys who were against pop-rock, hair-metal, and glam-rock. They wanted to make rock macho again.

You have to realize that all of the metal that is considered heavier than thrash wasn't around yet. Thrash was as heavy as it got. It was before the cookie monster vocals found in grindcore and black metal.

I believe that Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and maybe Anthrax are considered the fathers of thrash. Obviously, Metallica isn't thrash anymore.

When Nirvana and the "Seattle sound" hit. All of the Metal styles went underground. 90's and alternative rock made riff based rock, and difficult blazing fast guitar solos "uncool." It was all about repetitive, muddy, two string chords. The early 90's was the era of "the garage band sound." It gave guitarists that didn't have amazing finger dexterity a chance to get radio play.

Thrash is all about "relaxing" as hard as that seems, its a good way to vent your anger and i guess thats what all the musicians are trying to do?

Funny thing though: Thrash influenced Punk in the early to mid 80's (hardcore), which influenced bands like Greenday, which have been noted to have influenced nearly every "rock" band (to the genre's discredit, really. Greenday sucks) in the mainstream music of this era.

its not time for indians dude.. cmon all their songs are soo silly and their riffs are mediocre at best. ive listened to amoung the living and a few other albums, but i still think their entire band is subpar in terms of of skill , and their lyrics are just stupid. i mean.. their are funny lyrics like rumplestiltskin grinder, but antrax is just a joke, they dont desirve to be in the big4, not even the big 50.

Ya, that's a fairly severe thing to say. There is a lot of music that I don't personally listen to, but I don't bring its legitimacy into question. It would be rather arrogant of me to question its authenticity as music.

I realize that forums are rife with hyperbole, but I have to question what credentials gives you the right to make such a statement.

venom is probly the least skilled band that had soo much of an impact. but they still made some amazing songs, and completely different for their time. ability to make good music, and technical skill are two different things. the opposite of venom would be yngwie malmsteen, but in anthrax's case, in my opinion they have neither. i mean sure they can play fast and thrash it up, but they arnt technical by any standards, megadeth makes them look like a joke, and their song writing is just silly. not even a funny silly.

I find it odd that "boring" is one of your forefront complaints, seeing as thrash music is characterized by fast tempo. If a song just repeats the same riff for minutes on end, or just plays the same power chord continuously, that's called an uninteresting song. It is not representative of the genre as a whole. I understand why some find thrash music annoying, though I can't imagine that there are a lot of people who like regular metal music but find thrash annoying. My own personal taste is mostly not attributed to logic, but an inborn liking of that low 'n' fast guitar sound. In general, I consider higher tempo inherently better, since it means more content being delivered to the listener in a given time span. As for recommendation, I will take this opportunity, as I do every opportunity, to point how awesome the Guilty Gear series soundtracks are. They are very awesome. My favorite, Guilty Gear Isuka, contains three particularly "thrashy" songs: Push a Bush, Kill Dog as a Sacrifice to Dog, and Death Simpers at an Exit. I also recommend the band Powerglove, a remixer of classic videogame songs.

I think you missed the point a bit. The emphasis is on "song", not "uninteresting". My point is that your complaints are probably attributed to individual songs, rather than the inherent characteristics that define the genre.

There is a lot of speed and intensity. It's fun to move around to and play thrash. Overall, it's some hard fun kick*** music. My condolences for your lack of taste.

"Only" is one of the few songs I've enjoyed by Anthrax. The singing is done by John Bush (Armored Saint).

PlasmaBeam44

So then couldn't we consider all music but classical and fusion jazz illegitimate because it takes less musical skill than metal? I mean, it clearly doesn't take any ability to rhyme into a microphone or write songs with less than four power chords. Calling legitimacy into question is calling the open-mindedness of the individual who said it into question.

Anyway I personally never cared for thrash. Any of it, really. There's a few songs here and there which are tolerable, and blackened thrash and death/thrash are alright, but pure thrash is just too...simplistic emotionally/lyrically speaking.

[QUOTE="DivergeUnify"]Probably the most boring metal genre, Darth-Caedus
You must never have listened to Drone Metal.... And I can't really explain why I like thrash...I just do:P i

ARE YOU HATING ON DRONE?!?

Just kidding. I don't care for much drone, but Sludge is just blech. I absolutely love funeral doom though, another very slow genre. I guess speed doesn't entirely equate to enjoyment in every instance. Drone is great for background music while doing something else, but it has to be almost minimalistic for me to enjoy it.

[QUOTE="BayAreaX"] i like rock but prefer alternative.Juggernaut140

Me too. I hate metal vocals and the music. People tell me Metallica is great but I listen to them and help but laugh. I personally find metal music to be very cheesy and when I listen to it it makes me laugh. I just can't see metal a legitimate form of music.

Aren't you that guy who made that huge thread about how Death Metal isn't music?

No I'm not and my last post was not me trolling, I don't do that. I was just expressing my opinion.

It's metal man. The appeal is Satan and guy-tar!
