Yeah, same with nicotine, coffee, alcohol and even tea to a much lesser extent. It's a different kind of buzz.

It's a social thing. They smoke to fit in better with their friend(s). They think it makes them look rebellious.

actually, depending on your state of mind, marijuana has the potential to make you act violent.

marijuana doesn't make everyone feel 'good.' it has different effects on different people.

It makes the majority feel good. Its perfectly fair to generalize it, if the generalization actually applies to the general public.

I think because people think it's cool... and once they are older and they don't care about being cool again too bad you're addicted now!

A lot of people started smoking because of peer pressure to look cool but then continued smoking due to the nicotine.

Cigarettes have been shown to provide a psychological benefit, not just a "high". It helps to calm the brain down during high stress periods.

whats the point of smoking cigs. I dont get it. All they do is make u smell, have nasty looking skin, jacked up teeth, and people who smoke have the nastiest smelling houses of all time. Plus u dont really get any satisfaction or "high" from smoking cigs.

At least if u smoke, weed, u get that "high'' feeling and get the munchies. Plus marijuana tends to make u relax.

So people who smoke what do get out of smoking. I really want to know.

Plus u dont look cool smoking cigs. Its so funny to me every time i see people smoking cigs. they think theyre so cool its just funny.

cLAssic_BLUE
Like most of the people said, it makes you relax..so on and so fort they make u smell- unless you chew a gum have nasty looking skin-maybe some but not me nastiest smelling houses of all time- maybe some, but I dont smoke inside the house, so it depends on the smoker. If I wanted to get high..id smoke weed. and you dont look cool either telling people smoking weed is better than smoking cigs because you get 'high".

I never smoke cigarettes but I do enjoy a cigar, tobacco pipe, or hookah on the occasion. Why? I enjoy it. It's not that I'm addicted either since I sometimes go months without smoking.

I smoke maybe once a month. I've never felt the "need" to smoke before, but I do occasionally enjoy it. I've smoked for reasons 1, 4, 5, and 7.

Several reasons I've noticed people smoke:

1.) Stress relief.

2.) Taste. Some people really do enjoy the taste, as hard as that is to believe for some people. I know many people that love the taste of coffee but I can't stand it personally.

3.) Weight loss. Probably 80% of the women I know who smoke started to help lose weight.

4.) Oral fixation/Need to be doing something. You'll notice sometimes that people trying to quit will have a toothpick in their mouth. It isn't so much about the nicotine, but the need to have something between your lips or in your hand.

5.) Nicotine buzz/high. This eventually goes away unless you rarely smoke. Like I stated I smoke maybe once a month, but when I do the nicotine buzz nearly knocks me down. It doesn't last nearly as long as a marijuana high (maybe 5 minutes), but it's easy to see how someone could get hooked on it.

6.) Peer pressure. Sadly, kids in high school will try all kinds of things to fit in. Buying that expensive pair of jeans, drinking, picking on the kid in class that all the cool people pick on, and smoking. None of the people I know who smoke started because of this, but I'm sure it's happened before.

7.) Socializing. Many people have good friends who smoke, and will eventually grow curious and try it. Relaxing on your deck with some good buddies and smoking a cigarette is fun sometimes.

I've seen several of you reference pot as a substitute for cigarettes. Pot is not legal. Many people would rather deal with the nicotine addiction and risks associated with cigarettes then try and find a dealer and risk going to jail.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts.

I always thought people do it as a habit...they feel as if it relieves stress...

Of course...there are numerous other ways to relive stress that do not involve something that causes cancer..

I don't smoke, but it seems that everyone I know does. It really sucks how much it actually effects me. I get second hand smoke and smell like cigs after a party. If I'm walking somewhere with a smoker, I always stand outside freezing my ass off while they finish they're smoke before going inside. And as soon as I get in a car, the windows are open and I'm freezing my ass off.

Smoking is awesome. This is something that some of us have come to accept. Its fun, it tastes good, its good for your nerves. Its a way to identify yourself as cool. If I see two groups of people one of them is smoking and the other is not, I would go to the smokers group because we clearly share more common interests. We all know just how bad it is for us, but we don't care. Everyday you do things that decrease your lifespan. The whole non-smoker culture seems so childish to me. Yeah, you're healtier great. But your whole "just say no" rhetoric and tired, tired, cliches about "kissing and ashtray" or "awful smelling houses" is really tiring.

It's called a nicotine addiction. I smoked for four years but I quit back in August. Been happier and had more money ever since :D.

MystikFollower

congrats! I recently quit as well, been "clean" for about four weeks now :)

Anyway, while there is a little bit of addicition (it only takes 3-6 days for nicotine to leave your body), cigs are (as Ive said before) more of a habit than an addiction.

Even at work, I still find myself reaching for my pocket after an hour or two lol. I used cigarettes as a form of reward; I'd work for an hour or two, then go out and have a smoke. Its the perfect break; feels good, tastes good, and only takes 5-10 minutes.

When I am not at work, I dont want one at all. My cravings at work are going away as well.

Also, I have a bit of a confession: last night I bought a Black and Mild (a baby cigar, cigarillo) and smoked it...I felt like crap, though, and it just tasted awful. Tobacco smoke smells to me like it did when I was a kid; straight up horrible.

*TO answer the question, people smoke because it does feel good, tastes good, and it goes great with alcohol. PLus, all the people I hung out with smoke; I didnt smoke out of peer pressure, but my curiosity got the best of me and guess what? I liked it!

Anyway, the benefits of not smoking far outweigh the negatives; I dont get headaches, I breathe better, Im saving about 20-30 bucks a week, I have more energy, my junk works better, I dont stink, and best of all I can taste food again! This is a perk because I am a gourmand to the extreme.

I like how people say "smoking gets rid of hunger" is a "positive" for smoking. So instead of giving your body nurishment that it needs your feeding it tar and cancer. YEEAH that sounds like a positive to me.......

1. I know quite a few people that have lost MASSIVE amounts of weight because they smoke in place of eating a meal.

2. You dont get cancer from smoking. You get cancer from smoking over a long period of time. Like, 20+ years, and thats if you do a pack a day.

Yes, I am defending tobacco; its not as evil as people think, its just another bad and potentially harmful habit. People know that now, though, and the majority of people quit in time.

It's too bad it's the secondary smoke that smells bad, cos the smoke from the cig tastes great :P

When I hear, "It makes you look cool." I laugh. I have neighbors who have smoked for years. When you compare the typical 40 year-old man compared to the 40 year old man who smokes, the man who smokes will actually have skin damage from smoking. (Yes, that means he does not look cool.) If I want to look cool, I'll lift weights at the gym for a while to build up strength. Personally, the guy who can win a marathon looks cooler than the smoker who runs 5 yards and starts wheezing.

Also, to respond to, "It relaxes you." how about calling up some friends and go to a hockey game.

seriously? :|

ok, how about because A.) most places lack a hockey arena, B.) in place of that, most sports places are distant, C.) tickets generally cost four times as much as a pack of cigarettes, D.) most people do not spontaneously go to sporting events on the drop of a dime, E.) a pack of cigarettes can be obtained within minutes, and enjoyed immediately.

How am I exaggerating? I grew up in a family of smokers. I asked them countless times not to smoke around me.. they never listened. It effects my allergies and a number of other things. I didn't have a choice. As far as I'm concerned smoking is an act of selfish stupidity with no logic behind it. And don't give me it's their house their rules nonsense. When you're a child you have no where to go.

IF it really was a simple as feeling good.. you'd go run and work out every day and maintain a healthy routine of clean foods.. in fact you'd actually feel better than how smoking makes you feel.

Smoking is nothing more then a behavior for people who can't deal with stress in effective means.

Like I said before: instant gratification. I don't always have time to go for a jog, or drive across town to buy overpriced health food. I can have a smoke in less than 5 minutes.

[QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"] Smoking causes so many more problems then just cancer. I'm afraid I can't agree with you at all.. there is no logical reason to smoke. Lots of things may make you feel good.. it's no reason to ever engage in that activity... because it hurts yourself and those around you.EMOEVOLUTION

yes I agree, but you are exagerating

well I hate to say it but that is due to neglectful family members. A lot of people are able to smoke for short periods of their life, and still exist around family members, with no lasting negative effects to either side.

I am truly sorry for your situation growing up, I really am, but I cannot consider you objective concerning this argument. I believe your situation represents the minority concerning people that exist around smokers.

As for your recommendations, I did those too while I smoked.I admitI feel better now that I have quit while still doing aerobics and weightlifting, but that is besides the point: smoking is about immediategratification. While you can spend 30 minutes on the treadmill and an hour lifting weights, have a great endorphine high for a couple hours; youre gonna crash soon after that (at least I do, because I work out at 9PM).

Cigarettes, however, are about immediate gratification. You dont need to do anything to feel good. You step outside, maybe sit down, maybe stand, light it up, and spend 5 minutes enjoying some tobacco. It hits you almost instantly, satisfies any cravings you might have, and just makes you feel good with absolutely zero effort.

I am not saying smoking is great, or good. What I am saying, however, is that there are logical reasons why people smoke, and theyre completely legitimate. To be honest, if youre under 30 and smoke in moderation and consideration to others, I really would not worry too much about it. As you get older, its time to consider quitting.

Again, I am sorry for your situation EMO but I think you dont accurately represent the situation.

I know over 100 people that smoke.. it's not just my family.. I'm talking about many families with smoking behavior that all do the same things. They look at as a inconienve on themselves when they're told to smoke outside. they all do that... smoking does more then just cause cancer. It has a wide ranging number other side effects.. And no.. it's not a logical reason to do something when it feels good and you know it's harmful at the same time. That's a contradiction of logic.

It is true. Show me any other motive for smoking besides relieving stress. I've seen the behavior displayed over and over again. It's the only reason people turn to smoking in quantity to begin with.

Where do you live, Tobaccoville, USA?

I dont know a single person that smokes indoors, and every single person I hang out with consistently is a smoker.

Idunno, we were all nonsmokers before we were smokers, and we all hated that smell growing up. I and many others dont want to expose our smoke to others. Hell, I was downright paranoid about it.

And yes...I know there are many negative side effects to smoking, but we are not discussing that here. We are discussing the causes of why people smoke, and the etiquette of smoking
