Emo = emotional. So this means everyone is emo every once in awhile. Every time I tell this to my friends they answer me that emo is wearing tight clothes, having strange haircuts, and cutting your arms. My chemical romance is considered emo by thousands but their recent music dosen't talk about suicide, being emotional, and wanting to take revenge in a girl. But they are emo because they use dark clothes and their fans use dark clothes and weird haircuts. I've heard really sad and emotional songs about suicide, losing girls, and being sad but they aren't considered emo by almost everyone. Is it because they do not use few power chords with lot's of distortion and screams? I hope this emo fashion ends soon. What are your feelings about this topic?

EDIT : I have some skinny jeans. Every time I wear them I am called emo. I am not emotional... but for a strange reason I am emo because of my clothing. This is stupid.

Nah i get called emo sometimes when i wear my tight t-shirts after gym and occaisionally have a few designer tight tops i wear in town a few chavs call me an emo but i just laugh at them wasting their lives aways sat drinking and smoking pot with their ripped trackys and socks tucked into bottom of trousers.

A few of my mates have called me an emo when I listen to slipknot and evanesence but now they like some of the songs that they have made.

Emo stands for emotional hardcore. It was shortened to emo-core and then just emo. It's a genre of music.

i think that the trend is starting to fade. it started out as a variation of punk gone horribly wrong back in the 80s.

chavs will call anyone emo though, unless you're a jock or another chav then you're proberbly classed as emo by them

Yeah they often call the skaters goths or emos so its pretty funny but like another poster said it can be rediculously annoying when they get someones "class" completly wrong to who they are.

This again!

It's a teenage thing that I can relate to because when I was a teenager, I used to be depressed about losing out on college and spending all my time working, plus girl friend trouble and confidence issues. I used to stab myself in the arm and thigh with a compass. It was like sticking the keys in the ignition, trying to charge myself to do something about it other then cry. Sounds pathetic when I talk about it now, but this was all before it became a trend. I never thought of razorblades, they should try the compass.

I don't really know what's going on in an emo kids head when they are full out in it. It doesn't matter to me, they are harmless. I'm more comfy around them then I am around any chav or gansta.

I don't mind being around chavs or gangstas because most of the people respect who i am and was popular with them growing up. yeah guess i may have been an emo slashing my arm and chest with a knife when i was depressed for some wierd reason cutting myself seemed to ease the pain i was experiencing. but now looking at the scars on my arms andchest i think why did i actually do that i must have been very ****ed up.

In my opinion, according to their "theory", they believe nobody cares about them and the feel lonely, they "have" emotional problems so they try to gain attention. I don't know too much about them, that's just what I think.

Emo was a genre created in the mid 80's in DC. It's misapplied today.

Basically it's something that's got out of control, not the actual "emo's" themselves, who aren't even very prominent in this whole phenomenon, but the people against it. The word "emo" used to mean a sub-genre of rock, as far as i know, now it apparently means every genre and sub genre of music and everyone in them between Death Metal and Gangsta Rap.

Try to ignore it, maybe it'll calm down within the next few years.

Some girls look out for emo guys, they find them attractive. You see them getting together in clubs and they are not always depressed. So it is basically just a fashion.

What I went through wasn't going to get me a date. It was something I had to hide away from others. It was the real deal of the drama they based the culture from. I just find that so fascinating.

Also, like basic said, you are all misapplying the term. The kids that have the weird hair/ tight clothes are now called "scene" kids. Emo is basically dead already. And yea girls love straight hair, mmm, mmm =)

I have a side parting and a long side fringe that sits to the side of my face and covers one eye if I can't be arsed to push it back. I also wear skinny jeans in a size too big so I can sit down! I love My Chem and I wear black clothes but I'm kind of plain with it - I don't have dyed hair, piercings or lots of accessories.

I also have a lot of 'normal' clothes which I'm into atm - plain shirts, girly tops. I go through phases of liking different things - at the moment it's nice shirts, another month it might be t-shirts with long sleeves underneath. I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't care about what a piece of clothing will label me, if I like it I'll buy it!

When chavs shout stuff at me I usually respond in my best chav voice "Waaa ****head, get a hair cut, I did ya mam" etc. It's always funny to see the looks on their faces!

I don't get this whole label culture. I wish people could just get along. And I still don't fully understand why being emo is so bad. I get labelled as an emo sometimes and I don't cut myself or listen to emo bands (apart from My Chem). Most 'emos' probably don't cut and stuff - maybe they just like the fashion and music like myself. Basically it's just a huge generalisation on people.

Everyone usally has to grow out or play off their teenage style in the real world...

Try being dressed like an Emo and going to a job Interview.

Already been done by moi, went for first interview dressin in black shirt reveling the scars on my arms

(used to cut my self not little cuts hardly noticeable ones some people do but long straight across forearm and wrist was really depressed at he time as well lost some close family members in an "accident" and my girlfriend left me, had no money had to make it busking or doing flatland freestyle tricks on a skateboard for 5 hours ad day making only 20-30 pound depending on how busy the day was in town centre)

black straight cut jeans black shoes, hair was longer then had fringe brushed over half of face.

Got the job guess they felt sorry for me or maybe because i was myself not trying to be someone im not/ well was I'm more happier now enjoying life.

Honestly, I don't care. Let them wear tight jeans and black shirts. I've been labeled "emo" cause of my shirts (skulls, band shirts, etc.)
