I mean, some people would say it's an automatic 10% unless for some reason the service was truly horrible. Others say the waiter / waitress has to earn it no matter what. And still OTHERS say "what's a 'tip'"? What do you think?

I say higher wages for these waiters and waitresses so we dont have to tip them anymore. I usually do, but I like to act stuck upand cool at the same time, like Mr. Pink.
I only tip when the service is good, and usually I get stuff for around $20 and just round up to $25
You would then end up paying the difference in higher-priced food anyway. At least with the tip you have some leeway in how much you want to give.I say higher wages for these waiters and waitresses so we dont have to tip them anymore. I usually base it off of how well they served, but I'm generally rather generous with tipping anyway.
No tip unless they do a good job, if they do a good job, then I'll tip accordingly

Agreed here. The worst is though when you get that waiter/waitress who comes back to you and complains if you don't leave a tip big enough.

Thats a valid point. Well to answer the question, I usually give 15% if its average, 20% if I never have to see the ice cubes in my glass, and nothing if i feel they couldve tried a lot more.
0% for horrible service
5% for bad service
10% for below average service
15% for average service
20% for good serviceFragStains
This, plus add an extra 5 or 10 percent if done while on a date.
I am usually always generous with tips inless its extremely bad. If its for just me I will usually give upwards to a 50% tip for a $10 meal.sSubZerOoTHIS EXACTLY People always go crazy over a dollar or two Does that dollar really make a difference to you? probably not But if everyone left them an extra dollar, it would make a big difference to them Also, remember that servers are people just like you (they have good days and bad) -the only difference is that they have a terrible job (putting up with other people's crap all day)

If they ever did that to me, I would go up to the manager and tell them they have lost a customer... waiters and waitresses have a hard job, there is no denying that. But if you only see them to order and give them money for the check, then they haven't done their jobs correctly, at least in my opinion:P

Wow, ive never had that happen to me!! The nerve of some people. I wouldve asked for the original tip back if they did that.
[QUOTE="FragStains"]I never have. Lowest was when I left a penny encircled by an onion ring on the table.spazzx625How post-modern of you.I know...I'm like the Bob Venturi of tipping.
You really have a point there. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.Honestly i always leave a nice tip, around $7 or $10 dollars. In a nice restraurant even more. Really i think they should just pay the waitress more so a tip would not be necessary. This way they would always bring you service with a smile.

This way they would always bring you service with a smile.Shouldn't they do doing that regardless. If they want to be whiny grumps, go get a job at Best Buy.LexLas
I almost always leave 20% or more.Engrish_MajorLikewise; having worked in a sandwich shop in college and having several good friends who work in bars, I know that people generally earn it. Service has to be pretty egregiously bad for me to leave little or no tip.

The only time I do something like that is in a bar. 1st drink the bartender gets a good tip. when you go up for another round 9 times out of 10 they will skip over people to

I did too I worked for Walmart all through college All I am saying is that their income basically comes down to the kindness of strangers If most people have a bad day, their are paid the same If they have a bad day, their pay suffers Oh look at me, I left someone a penny...ruined their day...all because they were slow in serving me...what a jerk you are Now you can have a server that is a terrible person and they deserve nothing (although I have never had a server like this) But usually it is just a regular person having a bad day, and you just made it worse...CONGRATS...hope you feel good about yourself

This is why when i go to a bar i get a pitcher and not a glass, i don't want to be going back and forth. Also a couple of jack and cokes will do the job right the first time around.Idunno...if I am at a restaurant and the server is 1.) polite, 2.) keeps my water full, and 3.) well spoken and not some idiot, then they get 15-20%.
If I am ata bar, i usually throw down a dollar on any single drink over 4 bucks, and if I get 2 dollar beers I usually order two at a time and tip a dollar.
I usually give 15-20% if the service is good. Its its terrible I leave a mess and walk out of the restaurant.
I actually disagree with higher wages because that wouldnt be good for the customer. I cant remember who but somebody pointed that out to me on gamespot and it made a lot of sense. personally my position is if the person did an adequate job they get a full tip if they did a bad job they get no tip and furthermore they really shouldnt be expecting a tip at that point either.I say higher wages for these waiters and waitresses so we dont have to tip them anymore. After working in the service industry the whole time I've been working it is rare for me to tip below 20%. In fact I've never left without leaving a tip. Servers make way less than minimum wage and they really are working for tips. I know people claim that 15% is the average, but to be honest, I feel like I did something wrong if I get a 15% tip. I know many servers who feel the exact same way.
If the service is so bad that you are considering not leaving a tip go tell management and they'll almost always do something for you. You do not solve anything by not leaving a tip except ensuring horrible service the next time you come into that restaurant. I'm not saying its right, but if I see someone who comes in a lot only leaving a 10% tip they are bumped down on my priority list if we get slammed and I'm running through the place.
