just a slow decline with the divide between the rich and poor becoming a huge gulf.

I dont think they will ever fall.  Some countries may become less influential, but that's the nature of things.  However, as long as they possess a good chunk of the world's population, I suspect they will always matter.  Lot of land and resources and lot of people.

Nah. We'll go the way the other colonial powers did after WW2. Just like an army, if it's over extended, it'll draw back to compact, more defensible positions. Sooner or later we'll have to shift attention from the international scene and start paying more attention to problems at home.
