The reality that the United States will stay as the most powerful country in the world is slowly dying. It does not seem to be the case anymore. Which country do you think will be the next candidate as the most powerful country? why do you think so?

As everyone else hassaid, China, they will probably surpass the US even if it's power doesn't wane. They just have so much economic oppurtunities available to them. It just depends on how they proceed to utilise this potential.

Besides the fact that Obama is kind of essential atm to the US, I'll just let that comment fall through the cracks.

I sure hope it doesn't. Great Britain is realizing it no longer has the economical resources to stockpile weapons to compete with the most advanced countries so that leaves USA as the only Western power. I REALLY don't want to live in a world where we look at the Chinese for leadership... Hopefully, a possible scenario is one where the European Union (leaded by Germany and France) gets a strong enough economy and army to become the number one world power. Hehe, then EVERYONE would have to learn the metric system :P

So you think that we'd be better off with McCain/Palin? Then Palin would be one heart attack away from being president and we all know how that would be like putting DeeDee in the oval office- she'd go straight for the shiny red button right after looking across the window of the oval office to try and see Europe so she could add another "country" to her resume for foreign policy....

True. If I'm not mistaken France and Germany are the only countries in the world so far who are actually fighting the recession and growing at the moment. However, I'm a bit dissapointed that Durao Barroso is getting reelected(so far he's the only candidate and every single country in the EU supports him). I know him very well from his days as the Portuguese prime-minister(I'm Portuguese as well) and he's a power loving prick He switched from a Marxist party to the center right party when the political paridigm shifted in our country to be on the "winning team" if you will.

china most likely, but the european union could be a major power in the future, china is a maybe as the more powerful it gets the bigger the gap between rich and poor is and the biggest problem china has is it's economy relies on the west, everything that they make goes to the west so all we have to do is ban exports from china and their economy crumbles, russia could become powerful again although that will be in the distant future

Depends on how each country goes over the next 30-50 years. Candidates for future super powers as I see it are China, India, Russia, possibly Germany or France and one or two of the South American countries (Brazil namely), Saudi Arabia and Iran could be up there as well.

China, I believe, will be the perfect nation that can lead the world. They have a live and let live policy that is a start contrast from the constant intervention that the US is known for. Also, their society has the potential to be the most harmonious. I talk to chinese people everyday, the public is essentially apolitical, they dont even know what communism is.

I really don't think the US is an empire. Other empires took up HUGE amounts of land, such as the Roman Empire and the Soviet Union. The US is just the biggest consumer in the world, and so other country's are dependant on us for money, or so I think. That doesn't really justify being an empire.

Exactly. The U.S. is not an empire. In fact, the days of "empires" have been long gone. Even if by some chance the U.S. just flat out becomes obsolete, you don't think all the other countries mentioned would suffer too? If you're that delusional, you're in for a big wake up call.

Ban *imports from China. And good luck with that, the US will have about 5% of its current products after the ban and since we don't see any made in USA products anymore.... lol'd. China doesn't need the west as much as the west needs China.

Nope, it can't work that way. If Britian is to ever rise again, it would create a time paradox.

Maybe you should read up on your history. Everything west of the Mississippi was basically seized territory, at one point in time we had an expansion theory of manifest destiny, and during the age of American Imperialism we controlled territories all over the world, from Panama and Puerto Rico to islands across the Pacific. I don't think there's any way to dispute that America's NOT an empire, other than the fact that its citizens have never viewed it as such.

yeah, the EU already has an economy that is bigger than USA´s.. I guess we could say that the EU already has taken over the role of the leading superpower from the US.. though EU isnt really a country, its a collection of countries. or maybe we could say that NATO is the leading superpower.

I think its pretty obvious that the US wont lose its power, but that instead other countries will slowly gain similar power. So in 100 years I could see the worlds list of top countries being

1-Russia

2-US

3-India

4-China

Well, we have Russia, China, India, or the European Union.

I don't like any of these alternatives, but I suppose I can live with the EU. The others have such a sprawling network of bureaucracy and corruption, and by many accounts, much worse than the U.S.'s.
