[QUOTE="EmpCom"] We use yanks because its one of the least insulting ones

-xPANICx-

I know eh!

Anyways that's different. I say yanks because I don't want to say American...

so calling you a canuck is less insulting than canadian?

It's just me but the next thing your going to tell me is to use a calculator cause it makes math easier. No thanks, I'll stick with how I was raised.

kingkui
because you're the only one who has it. anyway sucks for your nasa who has a team of over 200 people just to calculate the maths when ordering items from the UK and other places like Australia who all measure in metric.

I'm from the UK and I measure my height in feet and inches (all other heights in centimeters etc), length in centimeters and meters unless I'm driving, weight in kilos (unless I'm buying loose fruit and veg), liquids in millilitres (unless it's alcoholic, except wines and spirits of course) and I drive to a speed limit in miles an hour. What's the problem? lol.

I hate being called a Yank. It's insulting.

The metric system is superior, yes, but here's the thing: my brain isn't programmed to think in meters. When somebody tells me that something is ten kilometers away, I still end up having to convert it into miles, so what's the point in changing? I'm working in a hospital in India now, and they use feet and inches for medical charts, by the way.

dinhibited55
Yea to most of us in the USA, something told in metric has no meaning to us b/c we were raised on the miles, feet and so on thing. Not going to change and really its not like its a big deal if we don't.

Because imperial is a horrid measuring system. The Metric system goes by the 10's.

We will change to the metric system when you change to democracy.

MarioRPGer

whiskey tango foxtrot?

it's quite easy to understand that the metric system is better beacose the changing betwen meter to kilometer etc is easyer, you just need to put some zeros to the initial number

You would have to be extremely stupid to not be able tolearn the metric system after you know the Imperial system. For example I drove to New York last week and I could convert miles to KM instantly. All you have to do it multiply it by 1.6.

On the topic Farenheight vs Celcius. WTF is 85f is that burning hot or warm? 0C= Freezing 10C = warm -10C = slightly cold 25C = hot -25C =cold

They intended to make the change back in the 1970s but chickened out when the Bureau of Weights and Measures decided the job was too imposing.

Remember when they started "new math" and such? That was part of this and the decimal system of measurements was to also be integrated into our schools.

HAD that gone through at the time this would have been accomplished by now and we would not be worried about it because I would not be thinking it both Celsius and Fahrenheit or miles and kilometres or pounds and kilos all the time I would only have to worry about one at a time.

I do remember when I was about to go to Heathrow I the travel department at the Air Base in '76 said you don't have to worry about shillings and farthings anymore the British have gone decimal.

Had our government gone through with the original plans for our public schools we would be in our second generation of decimal schooling by now8)

I believe we already do teach both systems, I know I learned both in grade school. The next step is to start phasing out the teaching of the imperial system. If we do that, the changes will start to take place over time. If we do nothing, we'll never get anywhere.

In all honesty, the metric system is far easier to learn and use. 7X 5280 is a much longer calculation than 7 X1000. And the numbers in imperial have no consistency. 12 ounces is 1 pound, but 2000pounds in a ton WTF is that. In metric, 1000 grams is 1 kilogram, 1000 metres is one kilometre. Everything is consistent. Now if we could only fix the mol. 6.23 X10^23 WTF is that. i know its the number of particles in 12 grams of carbon 12, but seriously, lets just make the mol 1 X 10^23 and makes everyones lives easier.

[QUOTE="STAR_Admiral"]In all honesty, the metric system is far easier to learn and use. 6.23 X10^23 WTF is that. i know its the number of particles in 12 grams of carbon 12, but seriously, lets just make the mol 1 X 10^23 and makes everyones lives easier. horgen123
If you learn the mol thingy you will realize it is quite easy.

I did learn the mol thingy, its the number of particles in 12 grams of carbon 12. And no it is not easier. I have to waste time memorizing this number 6.022X10^23, see the problem of memorzing this number, i even got it wrong in my last post. Its one of those stupid numbers that wastes time of students. A simple METRIC number to count particles would be far easier.

You don't have to learn it though. A teacher would rarely ask for it if that's what you think. And 1.0 mol NaCl says me a lot more than 6.022x10^23 NaCl particles. It is there so it will be easier to figure out how much something weights. If you got 1.0 mol NaCl it is easy to find out of how many grams that is.
