Its weird, when i talk to someone i find my eyes starring at their noses or forehead. When i catch myself staring into their eyes, i find it weird. Is this a bad habit? How important is eye contact in a casual social conversation?

Unless I really know and trust the person, I tend not to make eye contact.

I avoid eye contact. I find that I do so more with males than females, and females my age or younger. I tend to only feel comfortable making eye contact with non-threatening 30+ women.

Yes, but in a non-threatening manner.

Women are the hardest to make eye contact with for me. My eyes have a tendency to wander downward.

Depends on the person, this might sound douche like but if I don't really care about the conversation I don't look the person in the eye. Usually I look people in the eye then daze off every now and then.

I don't find it hard to look in someone's eyes while talking. It annoys me when people don't look me in the eye when I'm talking to them, though.

Yes, I do maintain eye contact.

Not constantly though, that's just creepy, but enough to let them know I have an interest in what their saying (even when I in fact don't).

It's just a sign of respect.

It all depends on who it is. If I trust and/or respect the person, then yes. If I dont trust and/or respect the person, then no. Hell, I dont even talk to that many people anyway lol

No I stare at their feet, even going so far as to bend down and put my face in front of their feet and speak that way. When it comes to conversing I like keeping people on their toes.

Yeah, I haven't had a problem with it since I was like 15, when a girl laughed at me because I was too shy to make eye contact when talking with her. I was so embarrassed that I've looked every single person I've talked to since then in the eye. I probably should've thanked her for straightening me out like that.

No, it's very difficult for me to maintain eye contact with most people. For me, strong trust is a requisite for sustained eye contact.

I have trouble with eye contact sometimes. Sometimes I just don't feel comfortable. Everytime one of these eye contact threads comes up it reminds me to work on it. When I do I notice that people respond to me better.

For those finding it hard, try aiming your sight at there upper nose, or lower forehead. It works well with a shy mind believe me.

I do most of the time. there are times when I'll be too nervous or I don't want them to see how utterly bored I am with their conversation where I won't look at them, but I do for the most part.

I do, but I have to force it cause my brain treats eye contact as some kind of threat, but I keep telling it who's in charge.

Haven't quite figured out the sleep thing yet, it always wins.

How important is eye contact in a casual social conversation?

Second_Hokage
try to keep staring at the feet of whoever you're talking to, next time, throughout the duration of the conversation the importance will gauge and present itself to you automatically

I always maintain eye contact during serious discussions, or in a job-related situation. It's, first and foremost, a sign of respect. But it also shows that you are fully invested in the conversation at hand. I also tend to lock eyes with someone in a debate or argument, and I don't usually let them stray in that situation either, as it subconsciously asserts dominance over the other individual in many cases.

In casual conversation I don't necessarily hold eye contact as it seems less important.

Assassin_87

basically what Assassin_87 said. except more notably in my case when i'm pissed off or i'm talking to someone to come to an important agreement on. holding and looking people straight in the eyes tends to scare the piss out of some people. in every day dialog, i don't, unless the conversation turns serious.
