I am from Canada not America. America may have been built on ideas from Europe but America is a great country and has a great history, you can't forget all the great things that were invented in America and how many great people ran that country.

joshrocks2245

Canada, America. Same difference. And America didn't invent the auto mobile. America didn't invent half of the revolutionising items that we still depend on this day. Americans didn't invent democracy or politics.

They did invent a lot of stuff though. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in America. The wright brothers from America invented the plane, if we didn't have planes it would be a lot harder to get around. America may not have been around for as long as UK but theres still amazing history. America also invented the internet, and America is the reason why we are so advanced in technology.

Who invented the US? =/

I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that, as I was laughing with my viking friends and reminiscing the times we conquered half of England, most of Scandinavia and beat the saxons, discovered Vinland and then snatched Iceland and Greenland out of the grasp of everyone else...

USA. I don't really know of much UK history and USA history is a lot more interesting.

Ninja-Hippo

Is that not a completely contradictory statement? You just said X is more interesting than Y, but you have no knowledge of what Y is. How does that work? 'My car is a much better car than your car, though i have no idea what car you have.' :P

I do know of some UK history but you can't say America hasn't had interesting history :| I learnt all about American history in high school and it was some of the most interesting stuff I've learnt.

Here's a few problems:

1) American history sure is interesting. It's awesome, in fact. But the issue is that you declared the history of the USA to be 'more interesting' than that of the UK, but then said you don't know anything about british history. That's kinda silly. You cannot declare one thing to be superior to another while conceding that you are ignorant of what that other thing consists of.

2) History and its relative significance is not a mere competition of 'who invented what', but just for arguments sake, it was actually CERN which invented the internet.

Based on what? And that is quite subjective anyway, I was talking more about the "way more freedoms" part. Are you serious about that?

p2250

America is known as the land of the free, and is the leader of the free world. The UK really doesn't believe in freedom as strong as America does. They are certainly not willing to make sacrifices for it. I'm pretty sure that why America was founded in the first place.

You're not answering me question:|. Where are "the way more freedoms" the US has? We have 3 main parties, US has two. You can get jailed for insulting the President. Go freedom:roll:.

I half lifted that from a Minnesota stand up comic who talked about how much she admired her Viking ancestors who set off into the great unknown, discovered a trackless land and ventured forth into it, until the found the one place that was just as god awful as the place they left :)

Well, the thing about Iceland and Greenland was because Erik den Røde (the red) was a hunted man, and he fled to Iceland and named it as such, to avoid his stalkers. Greenland got its name for the same reason, as a decoy. And most of the conquering in northern Europe was because our viking ships at the time weren't as advanced as they became the time the vikings were converted from Asa-belief to Christianity.

I do know some of British history, I don't know all of it but I know a lot of it.

The internet was invented in America though and you can't have the internet without a computer. Look who invented the computer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Presper_Eckert

joshrocks2245

But now you're completely contradicting yourself. First you said you don't know much of UK history, now you say you don't just know some but you know a LOT. Which is it?

Second, the computer was never 'invented'. Nobody one day said 'EUREKA!' and made a computer. The first *working* computer was actually made in Manchester, England, which is often credited as the city which invented the computer. Even that is inaccurate however, because computers is such an ambiguos term that some historians cite machines made as long ago as the 1600s as being 'computers'.

You wikipedia article relates to the modern day PC as we know it, which was put into proper production by IBM. That by no means = 'invention'.

Pointless debate is pointless however. Like i said, inventing stuff does not = great history.

No, I'm saying that if not for the plane, the atomic missiles wouldn't have even left the place they were made, that the wars wouldn't have been as devastating and full of death. And yes, I am fully aware that there has been warfare before the airplane's creation. And I don't hate America, I hate ignorance and hypocrisy about my beloved Europe and the history here, and the obvious elitism that a stereotypical north american citizen has displayed towards me every time I've been wanting to get a meaningful debate.

Saying more planes = more war is a little absurd if you ask me. If anything planes made war much more strategic and less pointlessly bloody. If you look at the first world war where there was little to no plane combat, all they did was line against each other in trenches then send thousands of people to their deaths on a daily basis walking towards machine guns. With planes and tanks things became much more about attack/defense, withdrawal and advance and the securing of valuable strategic locations, rather than simply throwing two armies at each other til the other one hasn't got any men left.

joshrocks2245

I didn't disagree with your opinion, i disagreed with you taking a side while conceding that you know nothing about the other. I think that's a little ignorant, is all i was saying. People are perfectly entitled to their opinions, but opinions should be informed, not baseless.

EDIT: and if we do indeed follow the logic that 'inventing stuff = winner', then i feel obligated to bring to your attention:

1) The television.

2) The Radio

3) The postal system

4) Radar

5) Sonar

6) The steam locomotive

7) The electric motor

8 ) The X-Ray machine

9) The toilet

10) The refrigerator

11) Vacuum cleaner

12) Submarine

13) Penicillin

14) The periodic table

15) Steel

If you really think theres more deaths because of planes then I say if it wasn't America who invented the plane then someone else would have from a different country, it's just America invented it first.

I know the history Europe has and it's great history it's just I enjoy learning about the US history a little more. I even enjoy the US history more then my own countrys history :P So it's nothing against Europe.

The UK region's history goes back thousands of years, then again, so does America (Native Americans). So I would say they're equal.

[QUOTE="Deihjan"]The UK has a more intriguing history for my tastes. Civil war and slaughtering indians isn't my idea of fun.Deihjan

The UK had a civil war too.

I know. But the UK isn't just about civil wars.

You stereotype too much. I don't think you have a clear picture of US history, it seems to be skewed.

There was one civil war 150 years ago, and that's it, your argument is invalid.

[QUOTE="p2250"] America is known as the land of the free, and is the leader of the free world. The UK really doesn't believe in freedom as strong as America does. They are certainly not willing to make sacrifices for it. I'm pretty sure that why America was founded in the first place.LJS9502_basic

You're not answering me question:|. Where are "the way more freedoms" the US has? We have 3 main parties, US has two. You can get jailed for insulting the President. Go freedom:roll:.

I don't think parties entail freedom....but there are more than two parties in the US. And you don't get jailed for insulting the president.:|

I said main:|. And yes I was wrong about that but the govt still get mad when they get criticized. So where are the "way more freedoms"?

Being your typical American, I am not much of a buff when it comes to UK history, but i assume that their history is much more interesting than that of the US, even if its only because UK's recorded history is longer.

The UK definitely. There's just so much that happened. Even just the history of one town can be fascinating.

You should change your title to "Which country has the more interesting history? US or UK?". You are implying that the US and UK are the 2 countries with the most interesting history and are battling for first spot.

UK.

UK without a doubt. Although I used to be pretty big into history I always found American history a bit lacking. Just too short and not that interesting.

The UK. Mainly because their medieval history trumps everything we have to offer.

And Robin Hood came out today. Woot.

UK because of the sheer amount of history compared to the USA.
