Blasphemy!
Star Wars turned the public against interesting sci fi. After Star wars it became more acceptable for a sci fi film to have a crappy plot as long as it had good effects. Intellectual Sci Fi went downill after Star wars, sure there were some gems like Twelve Monkeys, but they never had the success they used to.
So having your model of plot design on ancient Greek mythology bad?
So what if put a bunch of mythological references in star wars, doesnt make it better.
Star Wars ruined science-fiction? I'm pretty sure science-fiction was ruined in the fifties. The fifties had some gems, Star Wars made Sci Fi moe generic and popularized for a more mainstream but less intelligent crowd. Thats why Films like John Caprenters the thing didnt make much money while E.T did. Also kinda explains some of Terry Gilliam's failures in the past. People were too easily satisfied with good effects that they ignore the whole picture. i still think Blade Runner is one of the best Sci FI Movies ever and that George Lucas is a hack that makes way too much money, while a great directors like Andrei Tarkovsky get ignored. Also films like The Signal, which may not be a pure sci fi film, also gets ignored.
I'm sorry, but this had nothing to do with Star Wars. Terry Gilliam's films failed because Terry Gilliam is a ****ing wacko (and I mean that in the best possible way) and they could never be marketed to a mainstream crowd. Tarkovsky's films are ignored because his movies are three-hours long and in Russian. Those guys aren't the most palatable to a mainstream audience. Star Wars didn't ruin their chances of success, Star Wars simply persuaded studios to pour more money into these "blockbusters" that were kickstarted with Jaws. There you go, blame Jaws for your problems. Actually, blame King Kong. Seriously, blame marketing and the American public.I've been blaming the public for years:P Lowest common denominater I tell you.
