Wow talk about over zealous political correctness. All this was was a bit of fun and a tribute to the Jackson Five, even Marlon Jackson has acknowledged that they weren't trying to be offensive or disrespectful so why can't everyone else? And I actually find it quite funny that they are being labelled racist considering that the group was made up of people with backgrounds such as Indian, Sri Lankan, Irish-Italian and Lebanese, I mean correct me if I'm wrong but that seems that that is quite the opposite of being racists. Should I be shocked and appalled as a white person that a person of Indian background painted their face white? Of course not because I can see it for what it is, a bit of humour and fun.
Australia is widely known for its multicultural society, and unless you have visited Australia I don't think you really hold any weight in arguing that Australians are racist, because if you had been here you would see that in today's society we are very multiculturally diverse and accepting. Sure, Australia has had history with racism such as the White Australia Act which lasted until 1973 or so and issues with Aborigines, but every nation has had or is having problems with racism. Australia has come a long way.
And whilst I know it is not the same thing to draw parallels between black people impersonating white people, as blacks have obviously been subjected to to horrible discrimination and segregation but in recent times we have seen this happen and it's been okay. Eddie Murphy did it in his "White like Me" skit on SNL and even in movies such as "White Chicks" we have seen it. It was done in humour and was accepted, I certainly didn't take offense to it. But in all of this I believe you need to look at 'intent'. The people on "Hey Hey it's Saturday" had no intention of causing such outrage or being racist. Looking back on it they probably would have revised their choice in how to represent the Jackson Five but honestly it has been blown completely out of proportion, and people need to let go of all this political correctness that has blinded them. It was all in good fun and people have merely overblown the whole situation. Get over it.
One further point, it annoys me quite a bit having seen people say "as an American I take offense to this". What does being an American have to do with anything? Get off your high horse, you're not exactly the bloody little angels of the world.
