There are many. Most of these aren't bad director but I just dont love them like many do.

1. Tim Burton- He has only made 2 films I like, Big Fish, and Ed Wood.

2. Michael Mann

3. David Lynch

4. James Cameron

5. M. Night Shyamalan

Jackboot343

I agree with number 5. I haven't seen an M. Night Shymalamalama(However you spell it) film I've liked. You didn't like Sweeney Todd? :o

Signs, The Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable were good

Eh...You might have a Point with the Sixth Sense. I still like him the least out of those though. Haven't seen Unbreakable.

Raging Bull was as far back as I went with Scorsese. The Colour of Money was great though. Sorry you didn't like Shutter Island, but i love it. not because of the plot twist, which really didn't matter, but because of of his masterful use of visual cues to build up the suspence. he also showed a genuine care for Teddy, which drew me further into the film. best film i've watched this so far.

biggest_loser

I don't mean to pick on you ol' sport - but i noticed a few people said this in the other thread on SI. The twist didn't matter? If you don't accept the twist when he writes it on the white board how can you accept what happened for most of that movie?

the question itself is the very answer why this film is great (imo anyway). Scorsese successfully created a perspective through which you can relate to the pain and anxiety of Teddy even as reality falls apart around him. not everything which "happened" has to be rock-solid reality. with Shutter Island, Scorsese shows me he can be a magician, and that's why i prefer it over Scorsese's other so-called classics.

I guess I might as well weigh in on my vote. I'm going for Tarantino. I love Pulp Fiction, and I rather enjoyed the Kill Bill movies, but I have to say his penchant for long-winded dialogue leaves a lot to be desired. I think I'm one of the few that didn't really care for Inglourious Basterds. I found it a bit boring :P

My favorite Scorsese films are After Hours, and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Nobody mentions those most of the time.

I got stigmata from trying to watch Alone In The Dark. It stands a mile apart as my all time worst movie ever made.

Tim Burton. The dude just pumps the same cutesy goth vibe to everything he does in order to provide fodder for his cutesy goth audience, or at least an audience of people that consider themselves some how "artsy" or "hip."

Sweeney Todd was okay, but I didn't like Johnny Depp, or Helena Bonham Carter. I have seen Sweeney Todd done so many times before, and Depp didn't fit the role at all. He just looked like a weird pale goth dude who tried to hard to look menacing.

Tarantino. Pulp Fiction was a good movie. The rest of his works are either blatantly ripped off from better films (Reservoir Dogs is essentially a scene-by-scene copy of a 1987 Hong Kong film) or vastly overrated. His movies are little more than derivative borefests. I understand that he's paying homage to certain genres and styIes. I understand all of his tongue-in-cheek jokes and all of his references. Doing that doesn't make him a clever filmmaker. To the contrary; it's insulting to the viewer to keep making movies in the exact same fashion and keep expecting praise. We get it; you have a large knowledge of the film industry and you like to make movies in dead genres and pay homage to them. It was clever the first time. Now it's just boring. His idea of character development is to populate his films with the same actors every time and use them as analogs through whom he can pump his witty one-liners. Combine said one-liners with the aesthetification of violence, throw in a few dramatic monologs, and bam. Movie. What gets me the most is how satisfied with himself he always seems to be, and it shows through in his pretentious filmmaking.

Yea the only way they could have made it better was to have a random guy wake up at the end to find out it was all a dream.

Sergio Leone, Akira Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick.

Okay, I kid. I can't even keep a straight face there. Seriously though, there are quite a few filmmakers that I think are vastly overrated:

Woody Allen, Roman Polanski (let's not turn this into a debate about his alleged crimes, please) and Francis Ford Coppola: These three have essentially made a career out of coasting on the success of their early films. While said early films, and the first two Godfather movies in particular, are undeniably brilliant, none of these guys have made anything worthwhile in many years. Match Point is debatable, but my point still stands. Now let's slaughter some sacred cows.

Kevin Smith. Movies made for the fifteen year old boy in all of us. His characters' smugness and more-clever-than-thou dialogue is infuriating.

Quentin Tarantino. The world's most successful pastiche artist. If it wasn't for Hong Kong cinema, he would not have a career.

George Lucas. The man never met a scene he didn't want to mangle with a beeping robot or some such BS. He writes the worst dialogue I've ever heard.

For what it's worth, I think Martin Scorcese, Chan-Wook Park and Kiyoshi Kurosawa are the best filmmakers working today. Wong Kar Wai, Lars von Trier and Todd Solondz are up there as well.

i dont know.. i guess tim burton. its weird seeing people bash famous directors as if they knew more about the movie making industry then the directors themselves. The only reason i dont like tim burton is because i personally dont like his movies. but im not some arrogant douche that thinks he knows more about movie making then the people making them

Really hard to say, every popular director has movies I dislike, and some I love, even Michael Bay.

I have to say it'd be nice to see George Lucas do ANYTHING other than Star Wars. I mean, I loved American Graffiti but that was before Star Was IV was made.

anyone who says tim burton has no idea what they're talking about. sure he's released his fair share of duds (alice in wonderland, planet of the apes, charlie and the chocolate factory) but he's released way too many classic films to be considered overrated. edward scissorhands, beetlejuice, big fish, ed wood, sweeney todd, nightmare before christmas (didn't direct but created all the characters and had a huge part in the art direction), batman, sleepy hollow and corpse bride are all amazing films in their own right...

The Terminator and T2 are great. Titanic and Avatar are hailed as two of the greatest movies of all time, when they don't come near such an accolade (well, Avatar is; Titanic won a ****load of Oscars however). I haven't seen Aliens for a while.
