i was a history major and love it...im actually watching the history channel right now. I love Ancient civilizations (Rome, Greece, Byzantium) and civil war history a ton. I am currently not in school right now and will probably finish online with a business degree but that's purely career choice i still love history just decided i really didnt want to teach

metaldude05

Ancient civilisations are very interesting. Rome is the best, followed by Greece. Wasn't Byzantium the Eastern Roman empire at one point?

I am especially interested in 19th century post Napoleonic era colonial expansion. The clash of cultures is fascinating to me.

I'm also fascinated by the paths of thought that various scientists and theoraticians followed during the Age of Enlightenment.

I believe the romans had it concurred for a while so yes i think so. Byantium is mostly present day Turkey. It was a lot bigger than that though. I mainly like the history of the eastern orthodox church and the rule of justinian and constantine. I don't know why but it just fascinates me. Rome is by far my fave though

I am very passionate about history, and am fascinated by virtually every aspect of it from the beginnings of civilization to around the Spanish-American War. For whatever reason, my interest level drops as the U.S. geopolitical dominance begins to grow, possibly due to the fact that it is what was most effectively (and repetitively) taught in school. Currently reading: The New Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts.

I just am addicted to the Roman army, in most ways it was similar to our own. like an Optio is like a seagent, aCenturion is like a Capitain. A decturion is like a tank commander etc.

I like military history and I'm interested in foreign policies implemented by great powers and how they changed over time like Containment in the Cold War and how Bismarck tried to isolate France while keeping good relations with other European powers in the late 19th century. I just find that stuff so interesting.

My interest in history once mostly centered around Medieval Europe, especially the Crusades. I also had an interest in Ancient Greece, and, to an extent Egypt. To round it off I was also drawn by the World Wars. That changed one day when I picked up a biography about Julius Caesar, and fell in love with Ancient Rome, Since then, Julius Caesar has become the closest thing I have to a hero (anyone visiting my house will find no less than five seperate biographies about him, as well as translated copies of his own writings on the bookshelf), and Ancient Rome has become my forte of history, and my favorite by far to study and discuss.

Ah I agree with you there. I love the Napoleonic wars. Tell me have you ever watched or read Sharpe, he is a soldier in the Napolionic wars.

I have read the Sharpe series. It's good, accessable fun but not very true to history. If you're interested in the period, I suggest the Aubrey/Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander was a movie loosely based on his novels) or Alan Mallinson's novels about a regiment of British Light Cavalry from Waterloo to India and Burma.

Anyway, you misread my post. Napoleonics isn't my main area of interest (although I am very interested in the Age of Sail). I am interested in the events after the Napoleonic Wars. Things like the nationalist revolutions of 1848, the Industrial Revolution, the unification of Germany, the ascension of British colonial power, stuff like that.

Have you read Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series? They're fantastic novels. They're a little dense at times, but thoroughly researched and very full of historical detail. I don't generally care for female authors, but McCullough's books are first-rate. The novels cover the rise of Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla and the resurgence of the Caesar family through to the last days of the Republic and the Civil War between Octavian and Marc Antony and Cleopatra.

Ah, I love Julius Ceasar. He won so many impossible battles. They said that he was plotting to invade Parthia when he was murdered. Imagine though he could have beaten the Parthians. You should read Simon Scarrow

He made the Eagle series about two centurions in Claudius's invasion of Britain, and later Parthia and the Roman navy. It is a great read, you should have a look at it.

I Prefer WW2 history because that changed the way wars were fought. The generals learned that charging the enemy just wouldn't work anymore.

Of course i'm interested in history. I like the Classical world like you do but I really enjoy around 1400-1900 Europe. The Roman Empire dominating the Mediterranean and then modern Europeans trying to rebuild that legacy in the Renaissance, for instance.

No. The magnitude of human resources that were implemented and the changes it caused to the world around us were so great the it will likely never be met again in our human history.

Its not about slowness.

WWII set up our world's politics, economy, and technology which will be our basis for probably the next 500 years.

Yeah...Christianity was a HUGE part of human history from 200 ad to recent times....but Europe has abandoned religion along with Americas furthering separation of church and state... i think WWII is gonna have such a longer lasting effect... but just to think about all the logistics involved with operating WWII is mind boggling to me

Yes, but the changes of WWII were made to the pre-existing Western world, which was almost single-handedly built by Christianity. The Holy Roman Empire, the formation and eventual domination of the Catholic Church, the Great Schism, the Reformation, the emergence of Protestantism which directly lead to the invention of the printing press, the settlement of Plymouth. All extremely important events that surpass anything resulting from WWII.

History is the subject that most interests me. I like military and political history. My favourite periods to study are the Islamic and Christian clashes, ie, Crusades, the Moors in Spain etc. The early and middle Roman history, Greek and the two World Wars.
