By "best" I mean the one who dominates his/her sport the most RIGHT NOW. If it included athletes not in their prime anymore then this would just be Roger Federer: The Thread.
Anyway, some obvious picks that I think need to be mentioned

Bolt.MonsieurXIf he were such a good athlete, he'd compete in something that required running in addition to other more interesting skills. It's akin to being the world's best boiler of pasta and nothing more. Hardly worthy of the best chef in the world title.

They're probably about the same, I think. None of them really train for sprinting. How fast are soccer players compared to NFL players or basketball players? I know they have more endurance, but what about straight up sprint speed?Â

I would say Messi. If Messi can win the World Cup next year (which he is entirely capable of, Argentina is highly ranked) then he is arguably the GOAT.Â

Federer even at his peak would get molly whopped by Nadal on clay.

I'm glad I took the time to reread this post, because I thought you meant in general, not just clay. Because that'd be a very, very awful statement. Fed at his peak couldn't even get Nadal to a 5 setter at the FO.
Fed's best bet to rack up several French Open titles was from 2004 - 2006. He got bounced way too early in 03 and 04, lost to Nadal in 05 (semis) and in the finals in 06. He lucked out in 2009, really. As much as I don't really like Nadal, he prevented Federer from litearlly dominating tennis from 2005 to like 2008.
Most dominant would have to be Bolt with Phelps a close second (in a non-team sport an individual performance has much more weight than an individual's performance in a team sport, pushing these two up higher).
If individual performances were somehow weighted similar in team and non-team sports, I would place Lebron, Messi and Melky Cabrera/Mike Trout (surprised no one has mentioned either one) in the same top tier, but still have Bolt in front (probably because I'm a track homer).
