I stated that that is where it began. It's in a historical context, not a current context. Why is it so hard for people to see this?

[QUOTE="topsemag55"]

None of us were even living back then, so I hardly see any point towards judging America on a war that took place 198 years ago.:?

topsemag55

Who said I was judging? It was an explanation of where it began. Alot of americans still think of Canada as just another state. Believe it or not Canadians are patriotic. we are just more silent about it. It's an insult to be called just another part of the US. We are our own specific entity with our own laws and governance.

Well, I for one have never considered Canada in any light other than its own national sovereignty. That is because I see things from a military perspective, and we have respect for things such as national sovereignty.:)

One thing that does perplex us is why you cannot solve the differences you have with Quebec.

Quebec is full of french people. They demand their voices get heard in Canadian politics and demand things such as their culture being seen prominently in the upcoming 2010 Olympics yet make it illegal to put up any sort of english sign in the province. They loudest voices coming out of the province are those of militant revolutionists.

No. Animosity not hatred. That is where the animosity began. I've lived in Canada all my life. I know exactly what we talk about and the reasons we give for such things. We spoke about things such as this all throughout school. There are also many television shows that basically make fun of Canadian and American history or the past ignorance Americans have had of Canada. I am not generalizing as I never stated that all Canadians dislike Americans nor did I state that I did.

The only things that cause me (as a Canadian) to dislike the Americans is their government and the Americans I've met when I traveled. I also dislike their tendency to be completely oblivious towards Canada.

Well that doesn't paint a very nice picture of Canada. And FYI......Americans are not ignorant in general about Canada. However, not everyone pays attention to the world around them. that doesn't mean an entire country is ignorant. Nonetheless, Americans hold no animosity toward Canada.

its canadians that hate americans

Regent192

No we don't. :|

Now, this is just what I seen on X-Box Live (which is a terrible community), but as soon as I say "Eh" about 20% ask if I'm Canadian, 30% say "Hahaha a Canadian, what a stupid accent!" and leave it at that, then the other 50% tell me how big of a piece for crap I am, my country, my accent, hockey sucks, moose suck, all the stereotypes suck, I should kill myself and the list goes on.

Just going to throw it out there, I never bug anyone about their nationality, on Live I have English, American, Canadian, Scottish, Irish, Australian, Indian, etc. friends.

We mock the cultural differences between each other, although it's those countries who are closest and whose differences that are most subtle that we mock the most.

I never stated me, any of my friends or anyone else bashed another country. What I did state was that this animosity came about because of things that have occurred in the past. Why you are all attacking me for soemthign you all THINK I said I have no clue. I was giving a history of it. Growing up I've heard ignorance thrown in both directions. That is what gets heard, not the guy saying "YEah I know all about Canada." It's the guy stating that Canadians live in igloos that are the oens that are heard. That is what everyone makes fun of. I never stated anything like "Yeah we always get together and badmouth Americans every weekend over a case of beer and a bottle of maple syrup" If you are from Canada you went through the whole Canadian eduction system. You should know what I'm talking about as it is one of the basic things taught in that system.

The USA features more in the news and general media than any other country over here, so I suppose that's why you'll come across some cynicism and stereotyping, but I've never come across anything I could call hatred for Americans in England.

Because the Canadians and British can't speak English and impose their inferior measuring system on our scientists.

(A note to the humor impaired, the previous statements were in jest and do not necessarily reflect my views on Canadians, the British, their English skills or the oh-so-inferior metric system)

I don't have any animosity. I was giving a history of it to explain why some people have animosity. As stated before in this thread by others, I see it more as a joke. I joke around all the time about American/Canadian relations but that doesn't mean I hate or even dislike Americans.

Canada has long been considered our friendly neighbor to the north. They did help us win the revolutionary war, after all.UT_Wrestler

Lol wut?! We invaded Canada and got our asses handed to us by the British. Among the invading forces was Benedict Arnold. Somebody failed US history. . .

[QUOTE="taj7575"] Honestly, you must be unlucky as hell, because almost everyone I know loves Canada. Either that or you are full of it and are taking a few peoples comments and labeling it on everyone. Oh, and south park is a joke show, just in case you didn't know. It's never intended to be taken seriously..taj7575

Read my post more clearly next time maybe. I wrote "From my own personal experience I have met..." not "From my own personal experience every American I have met....". I also realize that South Park is a joke show, the fact that some Americans do take it seriously still confounds me.

You will always meet annoying people anywhere you go. It's just something that always happens.

I realize this, but the person I was talking to in the first place was stating Americans don't hate Canadians. I was merely using my own personal experience to show him that there are in fact some Americans that don't think too highly of Canada. It might be better next time if you look at the whole quoted conversation so you don't misunderstand.

Neither side hates the other. Americans do like to poke fun at Canadians quite often, but we don't hate them. Same goes for British.

Most Canadians don't like american politics. In particular, we didn't like Bush. redstorm72

Yeah but the Americans didn't either. Really no one did

Actually I believe it originally began because of American egocentricism. They attacked Canada because they thought it was their 'Manifest Destiny' or 'God given right' to rule all of North america. That's why they bought what originally was thought to be completely worthless land from Russia. (At least this is what we are taught in school) and from there it was because of American ignorance of Canada. I mean back in the day they use to think we lived in igloos and had no electricity! Nowadays it is because of certain Americans egocentrism completely miscounting Canada and other nations for the good they do around the world. Some of them even believe they won WWII alone. But overall I don't find Americans THAT bad.

Just like all the American Canadian threads. You have managed to embarass yourself and Canada by extremely over-generalizing when you critisize the U.S. on their over-generalization. And I have never ever been taught that in school.

EDIT: I just finished reading your post...... OMG YOU ARE ARROGANT. PLEASE STOP TALKING

I would suggest you read the entire thread. First off you should look up the word arrogant. Secondly you should understand what is being said. You are the third person to go off on me in this thread because you either do not understand how to read, do not understand english or merely misunderstood what I was saying. During the war of 1812 Americans did think it was their manifest destiny to rule all of North Ameruca, as explained above. However those times were smoothed over and later American ignorance began to show itself to the rest of the world. They thought we lived in igloos throughout the 80's. At least that is what we were lead to believe and the American visitors visiting the country and their surprise, expecially during Expo 86, that it wasn't full of snow and ice was rather humourous. Now I hope you realize I'm not talking about all Americans here, I'm talking about SOME Americans. See those are the ones that speak the loudest and who we remember the clearest. Nowhere did I state that I speak for ALL Americans. I actually stated this later in the thread if you bothered to read. The parts in amongst that history lesson in my thread were merely meant for humour. Which I also stated later in the thread, if you bothered to read. My suggestion would be to read the thread all the way through next time before making snap judgements about people so you don't misinterpret what was being stated.

Also, the war of 1812 is one of the main topics in Sociol Studies during certain years of highschool. I don't care if you were taught that in school or not. That is what the carriculum calls for.

All I got out of your posts is that Canadians feel animosity toward Americans because of the war of 1812. It's 2010 dude. That war is not pertinent and if a country is going to generalize another country and dislike such a vast amount of people over it....well then I don't know what to say. But it's not a positive characteristic in the least.

I'd hazard a guess that most americans and canadians don't hate each other. You may be drawing your opinion from the nationalistic chest thumping teens that post on forums, but the average citizen of both countries tend to be far more tolerant. Go up to any city near the border and you'll find thousands of americans and canadians quite content with each other.
