Some atheists may be proud because they don't believe in a deity that tells you what's right and wrong, or what the correct way to live life is. That's something they decide on their own, and it can be a good thing.
On the other hand, theists may be proud because they believe in a creator that made us for a purpose. That creator can also heal us, save us, and give us many riches (as well as punish you severely). It gives them hope for the future.
So, whichever side you choose, you have your reason to be proud of it.

Oh, don't be sorry. It could very well be me who is wrong since I didn't pay much attention in church as a kid. It may also be a "more modern" thing as you said. I've heard Lutherans referred to as a "very liberal" denomination.
Xx_Hopeless_xX
No, he should be sorry for someone who talks so fervently about his own religion and demands acknowledgement, yet is completely misinformed on other people's religions. That's so opposite of Lutheranism it's not even funny, Luther was a member of the Catholic Church at a time when it was preaching a lot of works righteousness, and if I'm correctly informed they do still preach some works righteousness. Anyways, Luther did not believe in the concept, he believed more in the concept of forgiveness, and he believed that the reason more people didn't agree with him was because the only known copies of the bible were published in Latin which was not spoken by the masses, or in other words because the Catholic Church wanted the group of people who could read the Bible to be very clandestine. Though Lutheranism isn't completely in line with Luther's vision, just about every sect believes deeply in the concept of forgiveness over works righteousness. Most Lutherans also strongly reject the authority of the Pope, what he's describing sounds like mainstream Catholocism, although a very distorted view of it.
To summarize...Luther practiced Scholasticism that is the method for learning that places emphasis on dialectical reasoning...he could not prove some of the things Catholicism believed in through the arguments of dialective reasoning after and he began to get frustrated..therefore he made the 92 theses this was perpetrated by the fact that priests were selling "indulgences" that is...the full or partial remission of temporal punishment due for sins which have already been forgiven..due to the invention of the printing press many people ended up reading it and following him.....i may have gone off the path with the pope thing..or the Lutheran belief thing as a whole...that is why i offered apology...which i assumed implied that what i said may not be correct at all...and i never in anyway "fervently" claimed that Christianity is the "end all be all" religion...also, why do you feel the need to get involved when the comment was in no way directed at you...?
Because of how ridiculously misinformed the post was. If you have no idea what a religion actually believes, which anyone could reasonably assume was your case with Lutheranism, then you shouldn't go around telling stories of what you think it is they believe, it's just irresponsible. And apologizing does not make it okay, just the fact that you apologized without being asked to by anybody shows that you knew you shouldn't have been doing it in the first place and yet went ahead and did it anyways. And don't even try to pretend that your first post was anywhere close to anything you said in this post because it's not, and in fact it contradicts this post. My guess is you either wikipedia'd Martin Luther after I called you out on it or you knew what Lutherans believe in the first place and made your first post for whatever reason, as a bad joke, to disparage them, god knows.
Well although I dont believe in that phrase in the way it sounds (and it sounds awfully), it could be said that ignorance is bliss and thats how theists are not depressed. Most people here are depressed, most people here are atheist, therefore most atheists are depressed. Fact.
Famiking
But just to clarify I dont believe that thats condemnable (honestly), just giving you an explanation that could make your convenient explanation backfire.

I don't really think it was misinformed..again..i apologized if it was misinformed...that was the reason i apologized...also, you seem to miss the fact that i said i may have misinterpreted what i read...again...i left my statement open for correction because i knew i may have been confusing it with another religion..
[QUOTE="someone"] I think you may be confused; there is certainly a lack of belief in a god, however there is most certainly a belief that deities do not exist.Rocky32189How are those two examples any different?

probably because usually atheists think more than religious people, I´m not saying that all religious people are stupid and/or all atheists are smart but a lot of religious people are religious only because their parents are religious or because it´s socially accepted, while atheists usually have to think about it more
[QUOTE="sonicare"]Atheism IS a religion. Look at this link - http://www.mwillett.org/atheism/sects1.htm Notice the different sects of Atheism. Now take a look at Christianity - http://www.religioustolerance.org/christ7.htm Now take a look at how many separate sects are within. Now tell me why Atheism can't be a religion because of your statement?Atheism isn't a religion. It's just someone who does not believe in god. Not everyone has the same reason for not believing, so it's hard to group all them into one category.
PistolGripPump
"Religion - A religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs."
Atheists do not believe in the supernatural, they cannot be considered a religion. Atheism should be best considered as a philosophy
Atheism != nihilism...spazzx625Are you a programmer by any chance? Ive been using != in Java and C++ lately.
Atheism - The belief in evolution, belief that our values and morals come from us and are accepted as our own, rather than having some external entity declare our fate.PistolGripPump
No, you're going into philosophy and scientific thought which isn't what atheism is. Yes, the two definitely go hand in hand, but that's besides the point. An atheist doesn't necessarily believe in evolution (though he won't have many other options), nor does he necessarily have any special morals and values. Just like people look to a deity for an answer, an atheist may simply have his boss, mate, father etc. as his leader figure. Atheists don't have to be independent. As I said (unless that part of the post disappeared) Atheism = Lack of deity, that's the literal meaning. Now if people have their own definition of atheism, that's another question entirely. But in itself, atheism is not a belief, it's merely a word that describes someone who doesn't believe in a higher, supernatural power.I suppose and example to differ Christanity and Atheism could be: Christianity - The belief in the bible, the heavens and the earth, mankind as we know it, a belief that Jesus christ died for his sins and was reincarnated (and if you follow his teachings you will join him in heaven) Atheism - The belief in evolution, belief that our values and morals come from us and are accepted as our own, rather than having some external entity declare our fate.

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]
Buddhists and Jains are atheists... but they already have their own religions... and I'm pretty sure not all of them believe in evolution. A belief in, or acceptance of evolution does not in any way correlate to one being an atheist. Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the diversity of life on Earth... not how it formed nor does it in any way regard the creation of the universe, the "meaning of life" or whether or not a "God" exists.Vfanek

Not believing in anything isn't depressing. It would be depressing if you knew God existed, but then if that were the case, you'd believe in him. I'm not going to get depressed over what I know is the truth. That's the same reason why Christians are proud - they 'know' the truth, just like I 'know' the truth.Seriously, I would think that not beleiving in anything is depressing.

I was not saying that all religions were not philosophies. You first addressed that Atheism is believing in evolution and our morals and values come from us but here you say that its simply a value that a god or gods do not exist.

I always refer to Dawkins scale. I'd be a 6.
- Strong theist. 100 per cent probability of God. In the words of C.G. Jung, 'I do not believe, I know.'
- Very high probability but short of 100 per cent. De factotheist. 'I cannot know for certain, but I strongly believe in God and live my life on the assumption that he is there.'
- Higher than 50 per cent but not very high. Technically agnostic but leaning towards theism. 'I am very uncertain, but I am inclined to believe in God.'
- Exactly 50 per cent. Completely impartial agnostic. 'God's existence and non-existence are exactly equiprobable.'
- Lower than 50 per cent but not very low. Technically agnostic but leaning towards atheism. 'I do not know whether God exists but I'm inclined to be sceptical.'
- Very low probability, but short of zero. De facto atheist. 'I cannot know for certain but I think God is very improbable, and I live my life on the assumption that he is not there.'
- Strong atheist. 'I know there is no God, with the same conviction as Jung "knows" there is one.'

Katakaypto - You look at it as not having a faith would be depressing, though some people take joy in other things and beliefs, som Aethiest are probably un happy just as some Christians, Jews and Muslims are.
turtlethetaffer - youre the exact reason why some people feel the way they do towards Aethiests. Just because someone believes in a higher power does not make it imaginary. Ever heard of the String Theory? Granted it doesnt prove the existence of "god" but it does prove that things are connected in a way that people can hardly comprehend. Wrap your mind around this... if people and living things are just "things" here to live and die and the energy put out by humans and other living things is "nothing". Why is it that someones thoughts can affect how water molecules form themselves together? That has been proven and people dont know why exactly.

I'm proud, but not to the point of arrogance. I'm glad I have the ability to defeat just about any theist in a debate. Instead of being hidden from evidence, like I once was, I'm eager to examine it and use it; it's quite amazing now.

Thoughts affect water molecules. You say it's been proven, but people don't know why. I'm not trying to sound condescending, but I think that post was fail.

I am more of a string theorist christian if that makes any sense. Im just curious how you can disprove a faith, you cant disprove a faith nor can anyone prove it. You say you are not arrogant, though you claim to be able to prove things you cant. Someone saying its true because the Bible or whatever says so is trying to prove something on faith... its not evidence. Just as I would expect you would cite the evolutionary process and probably the big bang theory which I believe in, though it still does not disprove god.
