I don't get it. Everyone I know who is religious is thoughtful, intelligent, and kind, with ignorant "stereotypical" religious people being in the minority. I'm not asking why you think the religion is stupid...I'm asking why so many people have some kind of hatred towards people who are religious?

I think religious people are great, their moral code is on par with mine, yet I'm atheist, I just don't want them spreading their views on me.

Because some people are ignorant. Some may have valid reasons. Other stuff such as to feel superior . Goes both ways . As well as for a lot of things.

Actually, if you look at studies, in the United States there is more hostility towards people who are atheists.

Every religious person I know is the exact opposite. I'm not trying to generalize, but I will constantly attack the religious behaviors I see as harmful. I'll also support benevolent religious behaviors when I see them, but as I said, in my personal experience that's not the norm.

Because so often what non-religious people see is bigotry, selfishness, hypocrisy and otherwise vile things coming out of the MOST VOCAL AND VISIBLE religious people here in the United States. They see ostensibly "religious" people promoting a hate filled agenda that involves going after anyone that is different, outside their yardsticks or in any way does not accept their idea of what qualifies as "normal". In the U.S. at least, this is most visible with Christians since they are the dominant religion. (Despite their efforts to portray themselves as a persecuted minority...odd.) I see most of the most visible Christians these days visibly going after gays or Muslims or other minorities, while simultaneously claiming that THEY are the persecuted minority. (Such as Rick Perry's disgusting campaign commercial recently, or that idiotic "Ground Zero Masque" controversy.) Essentially, many religious people have lost the ability to lead by example and instead seem to be trying to break down the wall between church and state so they can FORCE their views onto other people rather than INSPIRE people to accept them. Religion and spirituality should be something that, if you truly BELIEVE, is something that happens when people open themselves up to god and let HIM do the evangelizing rather than shoving it into people's faces and judging them when they don't immediately recognize "the" truth. Ideally, the best religious individuals are those who simply lead good lives and are good people, and let their actions speak for them to the point that those close to them take an "opt in" approach and CHOOSE to ask for that person's "secret sauce" so to speak by coming them and saying, "Wow, you really seem to have it all figured out, how do you do it?" Essentially, my experience, with few exceptions, is the exact opposite of the TCs. I see far more ignorant, hateful, biased, and judgmental religious people than "thoughtful, intelligent, and kind".

As with a few other things, don't take this board to represent the majority of anything.

Wouldn't say I am hostile, but I am very hostile when provoked. Try preaching your religion to me, and I'll start preaching about how I think you're religion is ****ing stupid.

It's not religious people that annoy me per se. It's mostly the low level of education and high level of ignorance/ intolerance that are usually attached to them.

Heeeeeey, OT religion thread... Screw this I'm going back to the hot girl thread. Anyway I'm a Christian and most of the people I go to church with are just as TC says, and a lot of the other churches in the area are the same way, so idk why that would be that way, it just is. Now I'm going back to the hot girl thread.

Its because many of them tend to go after people who have different sexual preferences or force their religion on to other people rather than convince them. Atheists don't really attack, its more like they say" I don't believe in god" and all of a sudden because they don't believe in god they have attacked the christians.:o But no. All they have stated is that they don't believe a god.

"Everyone I know who is religious is thoughtful, intelligent, and kind, with ignorant "stereotypical" religious people being in the minority."

Could this sentence be any more ridiculous? "Everyone I know" as if that's a credible segue into generalization.

You clearly need to watch more Bill Maher, or be on this board more often. More often than not, the atheist is the "bully" in the room who calls everybody "retarded" for believing in a "fairy tale" while everybody else is just minding their own business.

Considering that most people in the country and in the world are religious, it doesn't wash that people are hostile towards religion. Yes, there are some people that are, but they are a minority. Even among non-religious people they tend to be a loud minority.

It astonishes me that Christians can be both the dominant religion in this country, having a majority in EVERY branch of government at all levels (local, state and federal), have somewhere between 60-76% identification in this country, and STILL claim to be some sort of persecuted minority. This isn't Rome and the lions. Christians are not persecuted in the U.S. There's no war on Christmas or any other conspiracy.

I have never noticed any hostility towards religious people. Then again, people don't tend to discuss philosophy here and just assume everyone is a Mormon. There is a facade of kindness with most of them, but it's a facade... and a creepy one at that.

This isn't Rome and the lions. Christians are not persecuted in the U.S. There's no war on Christmas or any other conspiracy.

Maybe it's just what I watch and go to...but it seems like on every YouTube video, Gamespot topic, or Yahoo article people maliciously bash religion as if believing it is the absolute dumbest thing someone could do. Also, if you watch shows like Real Time with Bill Maher, it seems as if he, his guests, and his audience absolutely hate people of religious origin, and only a complete moron could ever believe what is written in the Bible...even if some have reasonable (to some) reasons for believing what they believe.

Because it is socially acceptable to do so. But if you hate on a Muslim or anything else, you are looked down upon..... I blame our government.

Really? It seemed to me as if that was currently the cool thing to do.
