I've been listening to metal since I was a small child, I was raised on Megadeth, Metallica and Iron Maiden. So I never fell into the trap that is rap, I've seen it happen to far too many people though.Bloodaxe726Im with ya brother. metal all the way. The big 4 all the way.
This is exactly what I think about rap, I hate it. I don't know why so many people like it.stedtfeld
I like Hip-hop much better than rap. Rap falls into the same category as pop music. It's formulated to appeal to a certain group of people to maximize profits.

Pretty much the same for me, except replace Megadeth with Korn, and that's basically what I listened to at the age of six.
...Most rappers dont even rap they're whole songs live. They just let the crowd sing for them. ...airg6This made me suspect that you're joking...
...but whatever, people listen to it because they like the sound. And sometimes the lyrics are easy to relate to and extremely insightful. And sometimes because they want to look cool in front of their friends. And sometimes because every other genre makes them cringe or gives them headaches...
Whatever the reason, Don't Judge!

No jokes here. Look at most rappers live shows. They point the mic at the crowd and let them rap for most of the song.Because they think it sounds good. What kind of question is that? It's like asking why some people like certain colours, they don't care how complex the coloured substance's chemical structure is since it's the visual side that matters. Same goes for music.

See thats where youre wrong. Metal actually takes a ton of talent and hard work. You really can't make claims about other types of music or the people who listen to it if you, yourself only listens to one genre of music. Personally, I listen to different music for my different moods.

It's a satisfying trap, though. It's like laying down a piece of candy tied to a string, and if you go for it, you get free sex instead of getting killed.
the only thing close to rap i listen to is Rage against the Machine, besides that I'm an alt.rock and indie guy, bands like:
Arctic Monkeys, Placebo, Muse, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, the Strokes, Interpol,
also, to answer TC's question, kids like things that suck.

No jokes here. Look at most rappers live shows. They point the mic at the crowd and let them rap for most of the song.Thats called interaction. In case you didn't notice, everytime they point the mic to the crowd, the crowd ALWAYS sings the lines. Why? Because they want to and because the lines are catchy. It gives the crowd the feeling that they are actually a part of the whole experience instead of just watching, which is a whole lot more fun.
People like rap because of the beat. Nowadays you can have the best lyrics in the universe, but if the beat to your song sucks, it will never become popular. Not that I have any examples, but look at Soulja Boy. Bad lyrics + amazing beat=great success. I say its amazing because it seemed everyone liked it.
Why don't the play rock at school dances? because the beat sucks to dance to. Really what can you do jump up and down? Would u rather have them play rock music and u and your boys jump up and down and I guess you watch your girl bounce, or would you rather have them play rap music and your girl pins u up on a wall and takes her booty and grinds on you? everyone wants the latter, thats why rap is played at dances, at parties, and why its more popular.
At least, Thats what I think lol.
Some rap is okay(mainly the older stuff) but most rap today is complete garbage. In my eyes rap is just very untalented garbage. Most rappers dont even rap they're whole songs live. They just let the crowd sing for them. Rap does not take much vocal skill but I will give them poetic credit sometimes. I'd like to hear you're theories. I think most teenagers and young adults listen to it because they think they'll be cool and popular if they listen to it.airg6
because we are getting dumber as a nation usa that is
What instruments. The only instruments I ever hear are a mic and a premade computereized beat.Drums, trumpets, keyboards... you've just revealed exactly how much rap music you've really heard. To get back to the point, there's nothing wrong with interacting with the crowd, it just makes it feel more worthwile to show up...

You really have to take rap for face value. It's not music that is designed to be deep or thoughtful. It's a metaphor for living in the moment, which is ironic as most one-hit rappers blow all the money they rap about.
I'm 29 and I listen to it as a joke. You'd be surprised what Office Space did for yuppies of my generation.
I'm a yuppie!! OMG!! Noessss!!

See thats where youre wrong. Metal actually takes a ton of talent and hard work. Where as rap does not really take any.I was raised on Classic Rock and me, along with many of my friends, are pushing for more rock at school dances. The last dance I went to (3 hour dance) they played 3 slow songs, like 2 wimpy rock songs, Thriller, and the rest was rap. We asked for Freebird and they didn't have it! Its a shame...Grodus5Freebird? I would've shot myself if that song came on while I was dancing..
I don't like rap too much. The closest thing to rap I like comes in some of the Bloodhound Gang songs.
The Inevitable Return of the Great White Dope

If a musician is not skilled ,their music is not going to be good. What more is their to understand. Most mainstream rap sucks - just like mainstream rock sucks.
There are plenty of great hip-hop artists around. Listen to K'Naan and then tell me rap is all about b*tches and bling. Anybody who says "rap takes no talent" is just ignorant.

How? It takes talent to play an instrument, it doesn't take so much talent to rap to a beat made by a computer.
