Why do most young teenagers like rap so much?

[QUOTE="hiphops_savior"]I'd say music right now is dead in general. If Hip-Hop sucks, then so does rock. Before you guys start flaming me, I have to say this, both genres have fallen into the same trap that boy bands and pop stars fell into. They're just instruments for the record label. They're nothing but tools for the business. The outlet for expression is gone, and when that outlet is gone, it perverts the meaning of music to begin with. It just tuns into a big advertisment for Corperate America. That's why music is dead, or dying.Bauers-Twin

oh no!!! for your info rock music was way wore off in the eighties then it was now. And rap has always sucked it isnt dying it was dead the second someone thought of it cause its such a pile of crap.

Yeah it is as easay as clicking random notes on a computer. Mick jagger sings which takes talent. Rappers speak in their normal voices while rhyming. Theres a difference.
airg6

It's not easy, you just don't have a clue about rap. You're basing your opinion on mainstream music. Actually listen to the music before you form your opinion.

My God why do people who don't know the first thing about it, feel the need to talk about rap. The stupidity is sad, I haven't seen a rap hate thread like this in a while.

To give you some idea of how stupid this thread is. Please imagine I made a thread like this:

Rock music is just screaming! They don't even need to write proper lyrics they just scream into a mic! At gigs the crowd just jumps up and down screaming at each other! The lyrics have no meaning and are just about slitting your wrists and killing people!

They would jump down your throat, there really is no arguing with these people. The reason I hate music threads is because you can't post without someone trying to call your music crap.

Tell me about it...

I heard one song yesterday on this one radio station, and it leads me to believe the whole genre is primitive loud screeching garbage.

Drums, trumpets, keyboards... you've just revealed exactly how much rap music you've really heard. To get back to the point, there's nothing wrong with interacting with the crowd, it just makes it feel more worthwile to show up...

Of course, when compared with amount of percussion, piano, and other instruments used in clasical, jazz, or progressive music...rap sounds like tin cans being smashed. Maybe you should branch out and gain a broader understanding of music before you start preaching the merits of rap, of which there are none in my humble opinion.

Did you actually compare the instrumental skills of hiphop to c|assical music and then conclude that rap was bad because it didn't measure up? There's something seriously wrong with that logic.

Hiphop is for the bands and groups that don't consist of 7 people and who don't sleep on piles of money. Does that mean it isn't music? Punk bands only need two guys and two instruments to sound like a band. Does that mean that punk isn't music?

Which was exactly the point im trying to make. People like rap because they havent heard anything better than it.

The exact same thing can be said when it comes to metal, indie and all other genres.

Most people who like indie and metal have heard other genres. Thats why there listening to metal and indie. Your just deterring from the fact that rap is not music.

Defenition of music:

Music is an art form in which the medium is sound organized in time.

Your premise fails horribly. Have a nice day.

Did you forget the 2 principles of music. Harmony and melody.

Irrelevant since rap contains both.

How does rap contain harmony.

Wait, are you're assuming that ALL rap songs only contains a single electrical beat?

Yeah. Thats all most rap has.

....Okay kid, I'm done with you

You guys who quoted the unnecessarily huge quote chains, I'd edit my posts before the mods see them since quoting more than 5 quotes at a time is disruptive behaviour. Just a heads-up.

Most kids like it today because they think it's the cool thing to do. I like rap from the 90's, but almost everything played on the radio is bad today, and that's what the people like. It's a fad.Bloodbath_87

Nas is still the best. I lol at people blasting Flo Rida in their car stereos.

I hate when people argue over rap and say the same things over and over again.

Person 1: All rap is garbage and it shouldn't be considered music.

Person 2: No, mainstream rap is garbage but old-school rap is great. Go listen to blah blah blah Roots blah blah Tribe Called Quest blah blah and you'll see what I mean.

Person 1: I listened to 1 song and I still think it sucks. I'm gonna go headbang to Megadeth now and swing my long dirty hair around with my ripped, faded black shirt with flames on it. BYE!

I don't listen to rap music, but to say rap should not be consider music and require no talent is just ignorant. Sure there're crappy rappers like that out there but i think to be able to write a meaningful lyric and to be able to perform it with emotion and rythm require a lot of work and talent.

i listentend to rap when i was younger like 10 or 11,

then i was introduced to the world of rock. i have sincestarted listening to metal, and now death metal/hardcore/metal/rock is what i love.

all the way from zz top to as i lay dying. anything with a band in it does it for me.

i now realized that rap requires zero talent, except maybe for the mixer doing the audio..... because most rap has a very basic and computerized beat, some does have real instuments, but only in the studio. you ever see rap artists play live along a band? i dont think so. the old stuff was decent, new is **** i dont mind the more slowish stuff where they actually sing, and not rap but yeah, ROCK FO LIFE.

Rap is definitely not the type of music I like. I'm not sure why young teens like rap so much. The only time I ever listen to that stuff is when I'm at the club. Then again, I can't really hear the music, because I'm usually drunk, and at that point, it all sounds the same.

I really hate how people talk about why teenagers like rap. This is basically like saying to the teenagers of the 70s and 80s why they liked rock. People like rap because its the only genre out there now. Rock died and is never coming back. They only good rock is old and not a lot of people like listening to just old music. Every teen generation is like this, older people hate the music teens listen to. So people that are trying to ressurect rock by showing people older bands, it isn't going to work. People are going to want new music and older bands can't really do that anymore. Its either that the band is broken up, dead, or just does some concerts here and there and releases greatest hits albums.

Rock is not dead. It is very much alive, you just gotta dig deeper. The music industry just won't let good bands hit mainstream because this country has a terribly short attention span.

I doubt the radio stations in my town would give me an insight as to what the "majority" of music is these days. Besides, there's mostly rap stations here, one rock station, and then there's a bunch of talk stations. That doesn't sound like the majority to me, and I hate listening to the radio.

Some rap is okay(mainly the older stuff) but most rap today is complete garbage. In my eyes rap is just very untalented garbage. Most rappers dont even rap they're whole songs live. They just let the crowd sing for them. Rap does not take much vocal skill but I will give them poetic credit sometimes. I'd like to hear you're theories. I think most teenagers and young adults listen to it because they think they'll be cool and popular if they listen to it.airg6
The majority [99.9%] of me agrees on the statement I've highlighted in bold.

The rest on the other hand I disagree with. Calling anything untalented garbadge is simple. Screaming in the mike is untalented garbadge.

In order for you to have good rap it's just like any other music genera [country, oldies, reggie, etc]... You have to have a good instrumental that coorsponds to the lyrics. Can't go off beat/key cuz then it aint right.

Rap does take vocal skills just like anyother music. And your last statement may be true but again, people like rap.

Kids like to rap because they think people will tell them they're good. Then they can have one of those 'under-appreciated young rapper' stories. You know, like '8-Mile'. It's pure fantasy mind you, but why spoil a young imagination?

Most Rap is just some ignorant (enter racial slander) talking trash with a beat in the background. No musical talent whatsoever.

et3rnal_d00m

Apparently the talent required for rap music is way over your head.

So credit is due.

I am 16 and white. I love hip hop. Real hip hop though, no Soulja Boy or Lil Wayne. I think Nas, Talib Kweli, A Tribe Called Quest...I could go on forever, they are just awesome. For me it's about the flow and the meaningful lyrics. I can see why the idiocy of some "rappers" would turn some people off.

I like some rap precisely because it's garbage... take stuff like Lollipop and Buy U a Drank, it instantly puts me in a good mood with its goofiness.

most teenagers like rap just to fit in, in my opinion...and yes, this is from the perspective of a teenager. Rap is tolerable, but not my favorite. Anyways, it's all they play on TV these days, and everyone knows the songs so they just listen to fit right in. Sometimes I find myself doing this sort of thing:o. Good question

I'd like to say something to these "ROKz0rsZ1 4 LI3f!!" fans that have been saying a few things about rap:

1. You are obviously ignorant about rap because although mainstream rap is full of these monikers, it doesn't mean all rap is crap.

2. Listen to Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, N.W.A, Run DMC, the Roots, Grandmaster Flash, Ice Cube and you tell me if this is your average crap rap. You'll find out that you have been wrong about rap.

3. To the guy that said that rap stars never toured with rock bands, what about Aerosmith/Run DMC, Public Enemy/Anthrax, Ice Cube/Korn, etc. If it weren't for Public Enemy and Anthrax, there would be no Slipknot, Disturbed, Korn, or any other nu metal band.

If you still think rap is horrible, I'm gonna recommend some of the best rap albums you'll ever hear and maybe you'll change your mind, maybe not. At least sell those albums to someone who wants them.

Not true. I am in high school. My friends caught me listening to Linger by The Cranberries and they hardly cared, so that pretty much debunks any possibility of the music you like impacting how well you fight in.

Honestly, 80's rap sounds dated, and this is coming from a hip hop fanatic.

Because they like it. Why do I like the color red? I just do. Why do I like video games? I just do. Stop ranting about other people's interests like it's a sin.
