Seriously, this gets on my nerves to no end. I never understand why people like to hate popular things. What's even worse, is that they always try and make you like what they like afterwards. I've seen people do this with shows like Heroes, Naruto, Battlestar Galactica, The office, House, Family Guy, Bleach, and much more.

Why? Why is it that certain people have this huge tendency to dislike what's popular, and then feel like they have to show you what's "better"?

Why do you assume that these people who dislike those mediums of entertainment that just so happen to be popular are automatically hating it because it's popular, rather than because they feel that they have a reason to dislike it (besides the aforementioned)?

Ther are really only two popular things that I dislike.

1. ipods, because they are really overpriced and overrated.

2. Rap music. I just don't enjoy listening to it.

Well, its usually everywhere and talked about non stop. And usually unknown things seem to be better than popular things and the unknown get no reputation IMO.

But some people dislike some popular things... and it's annoying to be told that you don't like something just because it's popular, when you really don't like it.

I was never impressed with The Dark Night.

I was accused of not liking it because it was popular, and than much time after when the hype died down, accused of being on a new "I don't like The Dark Night bandwagon."

Ofc there are people who hate something because they well...hate it, but I'm talking about the other group of people. The group of people that prior experience has shown me tend to only like the things that other people never heard of, and feel some sort of superiority because of it.

very true, and why wouldnt you hate on some 'popular' things?

Soulja boy ? Lol you gotta be kidding me. Same with most mainstream music now. Its garbage, yet it is deemed as "good".

Oh and I hope some people realize how annoying the "why so serious" thing is.........................................

Again, that assumes that they blatantly base their justification behind disliking something only because it's popular. Unless you happen to run into a bunch of guys that vehemently spout their opinions on such matters by stating that the only reason that they dislike something is because it's popular, then that still leaves room for doubt that it's the only reason. Maybe they've got plenty of reasons, but they don't want to share them. Maybe you haven't bothered to ask them why or even contemplate it yourself. Either way, you're just assuming that it's only because it's popular.

Some people hate things, because yes, it is popular. Others actually hate whatever is popular whether it is popular or not so you can't really blame them. I mean I hate a lot of popular bands, video games, but not because they are popular. I really don't like them whether they are popular or not.

To be fair....what appeals to the general masses is usually the lowest common denominator in entertainment...or it wouldn't appeal to such a large audience. Some people seek more for their entertainment.

Some people love to hate on popular things because they like to stick it to/in the man and be right trendy rebels.

Truth is, I hate some popular stuff, but not because of its popularity, but because I genuinely don't like them. Example: iPod and iTunes.

Actually there really are people out there who choose to be anti-popular. They have this twisted idea that hating on popular things makes them non-conformists to the dictates of the media and masses.

But thats just a stigma. Just because something can relate to general masses doesnt mean its because it is the lowest form of entertainment. I mean, what is that "more" you seek? More as in something so complex it can only appeal to you and maybe a handful of people?

Several reasons, possibly being anti-conformist, aware of better alternatives, or the mainstream popularity simply not appealing.

It's not a stigma. To appeal to a large amount of people the subject can't be too complicated. Look at the music that charts since they keep track. Most of the "hits" were hook laden songs with catchy repetitive lyrics. It requires no thinking....easy to understand and remember.

Sure everyone once in awhile something creative and thought provoking is heralded by the mainstream...but for every song/show/movie that is in that category...there are 20 more that are not.

What's popular? Pop music......reality shows....and comedies. Most of which are shallow.

Actually its very hard to execute comedy and executing pop music can be surprisingly difficult -- for every 1 successful artist, you have a handful of failures as well. Reality shows have only recently become popular. There are many things that have become popular that could fall into the creative and thought provoking -- but the question is, do these popular things fall into what YOU would describe as deep and thought provoking.

Mainly because they're often times overrated. Hate to break it to you, but the following CANNOT be the greatest game ever:

  • Final Fantasy VII/X/the latest one (heard it before)
  • Halo 1/2/3
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Half Life 2
  • Whatever you say :P

Most comedies are go for the juvenile jokes. There are but a few that require thought to get the joke. Pop is not hard just because some bands/artists fail at it. Just take a gander at all the one hit wonders that successfully used the formula to get a hit. They didn't have the talent to sustain the hits...but they got the catchy hook and repetitive phrasing down well enough to get a hit.

No..the definition of deep and thought provoking actually isn't personal opinion. There is a big difference between a Madonna song....and a Beethoven composition.

I don't hate popular shows, games, or movies...I usually like them. But music is different. I find that most popular music is garbage with no substance. A lot of other people feel the same, but then there are the indy nuts who really just hate on popular stuff because it makes them feel special or different.

LJS9502_basic

Yeah, they're incomparable and both have made quite an impact in the music industry. Some can even argue that Madonna has a bigger impact than Beethoven (I dont think so -- but if I played devil's advocate it wont be difficult).

In regards to comedies, I suggest you try writing a comedy and tell me how easy it is. Comedy writing and executing is very difficult. Talk to all of the struggling comedy writers, commedians, etc that I meet and its not pretty.

If pop music is so easy to execute, then why cant every person who follows "the formula" be successful at it. The fact that people fail at it means its not that easy to appeal to the masses as one might think.

[QUOTE="Sajedene"]

You can read the reviews and see that the Ipods are very successful because they know how to cater to their market thus sustaining their popularity. The reason why they are so over priced is because of the demand. If they werent so amazing (and I hate Ipods btw), people would not buy them.

Exactly. Popular music is almost always terrible. It's in simple 4/4 time, the lyrics are lame and/or brainless, they play simple chords, beats, etc. etc. etc.

Why do you think rap is popular? It appeals to male and female. Males look up to rappers, and females think they're attractive and put pics of them on their binders and ****.

ice144

because alot of it is a buch of mindless teens who just buy into fads and trends to try and fit in instead of establishing their own identitly. They listen to what their friends listen too or wear what their friends wear to try and fit and become "accepted" into society. They become mindless tools who cant think for themselves but has the mainstream do it for them. Its also annoying to get into something(take Jeff Dunham for example) only to hear 2 years later a bunch of preppy kids walk around with the same hair cut and t-shirts going "omg that did you see that new comedian...umm jeff Done-Ham last night? hes sooooo funny." It gets annoying especially when all 2000 kids in your school feel the need to tell you the same joke over and over again. Also adding to a previous point I find it funny when you walk down the street and see 4 teenage guys wearing the same A&E shirt(in different colors of course...so they arent dressed the same) the same washed out/ripped holister pants and the same stupid wannabe supersayian/onion bloom haircut all with their iPhones in their ear thinking they are unique and cool when they are really just sheep to the system.

oh and yeah dude...really? Naruto is crap!

just because something is popular, it doesnt mean that its good.

family guy has declined in recent years. they keep using the same jokes from season 4 over and over so much that its not funny anymore. i dont know how many chicken fight scenes there are anymore.

If I hate anything that is popular, it is not it's popular status that makes me despise it.

I don't like Naruto because it has ridiculous amounts of filler. I don't want an iPod since I'm not an avid music listener. I don't really have any feeling towards Heroes, I've never watched it simply because I never really felt like it.

I havent see the new season but last I watched Heros wasnt a bad show. I thought it was neat when I first saw it. Thats getting off topic though, sorry. You bring up a good point though most people dislike and occasionally hate on popular things because for the most part alot of it is crap. Unfortunatlly I have an iPod but there isnt much to chose from these days...I just dont feel the need to buy the latest one that comes out every year like some people do just because it has a minor change to it.

Heroes was a decent show in the first season, but it declined in the second season because of the writer's strike, and the third season is a little mixed. As for the Ipod thing, Itunes is a pretty cool service when you are looking for podcasts, etc. I usually don't use my Ipod, by I have it in the car just so I can listen it through the stereo.

For the record, I don't like strawberry cake. And its not just because it's popular, but because I'm allergic.
