Start reading more and get a more superfluous vocabulary. It will allow you to become more fluent in the language and make your arguments more easily understandable. Using the right word for the right idea is better than trying to mish-mash the wrong one into the same situation.

English mistakes are like the acne of writing: they're only skin-deep, and they don't really change anything meaningful, but they're ugly and are an immediate turn-off all the same.
Really, it's understandable why someone would abbreviate something in a chat room setting, because of how fast things move. But when you have all the time in the world on a message board setting, there's just no excuse whatsoever not to take like two extra seconds and make your post presentable.
Couldn't have said it better myself if I was an English Major.. :P I really liked the acne simile.[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="Bloodbath_87"] The point I saw is that it's neater. It's barely neater.Bloodbath_87Yes. Yes, it is. It's also helpful for finding the beginning of a sentence. Sentences usually begin after a punctuation mark. That's how you can find the start of one. My name is Tyler. There are caps on the last word of that sentence, that doens't help you find the start. It's in an entirely different paragraph.
Using the word "miniscule" doesn't count as talking pretentiously. No, talking pretentiously would be like saying:
"If it is not terribly onerous could you please apply a liberal amount of diluted acetic acid, preferably 1 molar or 4-8% by volume, atop my sandwich? And I use 'my' tentatively, of course, as I have not yet disbursed unto you financial compensation in order to procure ownership of the aforementioned aliment" instead of saying "Can I get some vinegar on there too?" when you go to a deli.
The reason people use proper grammar on forums is because they want to be understood and not be taken as idiots. It tends to help your reader's comprehension if they can actually read what you've typed instead of having to decipher something like "y do ppl on fourums need 2 act liek theyve majored english/".

I'm tired and can't comprehend things like similes.[QUOTE="Bloodbath_87"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"] Yes. Yes, it is. LMAO XD They try to sound intellgent without knowing that those who use big words are usually the ignorant ones. You could get your point across without sounding pretencious too. The most important thing in an essay is to be short and precise because long essays/posts indicates that the writer doesn't know what to talk about exactly.

Well yeah, but it's generally not worth the time and energy to read it. Actually, that kind of typing is kind of handy. It's like a giant "Don't Read Me" sign, to help you avoid accidentally reading something really stupid.
It doesn't take any extra effort to read that.Actually it does slow me down. Punctuation and grammar rules exist for a reason, they assist in getting a clear message across. Usually you can survive without them, but they aren't difficult to include either. It's not a big deal, but it is slightly better. That chopped up spelling on the other hand slows me down significantly and can lead to confusion. I would never willingly read more than a few sentences of that garbage.
so what you're saying is that you'd enjoy a forum board where everyone talked retarded or in l33t speak? I wouldn't and I'm sure the majority of people on the internet wouldn't aside from those who actually talk like that normally.
Exactly. I've learnt English since I was 6, and it's not my native language. Why wouldn't I use it in a proper manner? Although I never criticize bad English use, "this is just a forum" + ignorance ARE not an excuse ;)why would you speak bad english when you can speak good?

There's nothing wrong with a long essay, if it is filled with quality content. Long posts do make people lose interest though. Some people try to overuse big words in innapropriate contexts, but oftentimes the words convey the meaning better than the alternative. Maybe it's because I'm a slow typer and so having nothing but time to think about how I'm expressing an idea, but I find I'm actually more wordy in forums than in conversation.

Anyway, those who do use "pre-1900's" English end up being the most ignorant. They may be trying to gain attention for their vocabulary skills (or whatever). Just ignore them and enjoy yourself ;)

No, ARE is correct here, not IS. It is a CUMULATIVE statement, therefore use of plural ;)[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="TheMadGamer"]
Your topic title is wrong, english should be English.
The first word should also be capitalized. I don't know why it's so hard for people to remember to capitalize things. This is a gaming forum though.

No, you didn't get it. This is the whole statement: "this is just a forum" + ignorance. This is why "are" must be used, because there are two reasons! One is "this is just a forum" and the other is ignorance
[QUOTE="qwertyu"]
most people on forums I see need to use high tech words and expect maximum punctuation from other people, but why, why have they done this, its only a video game forum, i dont think ur cooler than the other guy that types lik thiz
EXAMPLE:
It must be nice to be so concerned about something so minuscule.Oh...and next time: mention that you're actually going to be in the WCG in your first post. Then again, you're the only one that cares.
why does this jackwipe need to use the word minuscule, jughead, just TALK IN ENGLISH
MrGeezer
1) You misspelled "miniscule".
2) "Miniscule" is a common word. If you don't know what it means, that's your fault.
3) It's hard to tell without more context, but I suspect that "insignificant" is probably the more appropriate word. After all, HIV and smallpox are both "miniscule" viruses, but I guarantee that you will be pretty concerned if you are ever infected by them.
It's another variant of a word with the same meaning. Are you suggesting we simplify the English language? That's double plus good! It's another variant of a word with the same meaning.

[QUOTE="Bane_v2"]It takes more time, thought and effort for me to type in a lackadaisical fashion than it does to type out complete, grammatically correct sentences. I'm not an English major, but I do try my best. You can type however you want, but know that if your post falls below my threshold of acceptable slaughter of the English language I just don't read it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does that so as long as you're fine with being ignored by a percentage of the userbase please soldier on in your war against literacy.Jandurinslaughter is laughter with an s on the front that is so true
I would've used "use" as opposed to "know". Also, I'm digging The Cure thus far :oI don't see any reason to get upset that some people know grammar.:|
