All I ask of other posters is for their post to be legible. I understand that we are on a web forum and we have to type manually, So I can understand people using words like "u" instead of "you" or "btw" instead of by the way. What I dont like is when it gets so much, that you can't make heads or tails of a post, when people type things like: "u no dat wez gota partay @ my houz btwn 4 n 5. b der. dun b l8." That annoys the living hell out of me.

As for using big words, I dont mind it all, as long as its being used for the sake of clarity. There are times when people use words that they know the majority of people don't know. Whats the point in that other than stroking your ego? The point of words is for communication, not to show off your diverse vocabulary. Just be as clear an concise as possible, realize that by posting on a mesage board, your number one concern is that people actually understand what it is you are trying to say.

Here are some examples:

Good use of words : "I dont understand what's going on here" - The majority of posters will clearly know what you meant in your post

Sketchy use of words; "I couldn't possibly fathom what you just said" - Its getting a little pretentious here...Sure it isnt such a complex word, but clearly there are far more common words that mean the exact same thing.

Bad use of a word: "Its an amalgamation of ..." - Ok, this one is bad. You could have clearly used combination, yet you went out of your way to say "amalgamation" to seem more intelligent and to show of your vocab...no one cares.

Terrible use of a word: "Yup, that's melancholia for you." - JESUS H. PRETENTIOUS CHRIST! You couldnt have just said he was depressed? very sad? very unhappy? People like this are more concerned with how their post sounds rather than what it says. They need to chill or go find another place to try and validate their intelligence to themselves.

We all are guilty of this at some point in time, but the worst offenders are specialists in a certain area, or people with more than standard knowledge of a certain discipline. Nothing annoys me more than all the Psych students who come up here and use fancy Psychology terms in an attempt to show off. So unnecessary.

Pseudo intellectuals? Depends....sometimes it's just natural for certain expressions to be used depending on the individual. I generally use words/expressions in common usage but then I've been criticized for not using "more intellectual" words by some users here. You really can't win.

I really don't care how people write. If they know how to write properly it gives a more intelligent picture of the person but I don't judge people by their text. I personally go both ways. If dis 4um wuz talkin liek dis all teh tiem it wuld b perfektly k w/ me. On the other hand it's nice to throw in some ravishingly cultivated terms here and there.

I like the people that are like "When you can construe your congestial thoughts into a menistial, proverbal profound thought, I desire not to conscrew a de-highlated hypothosis" DUDE.....we're talking about mario/halo/general crap. Take it else where. I've been getting better at doing little things, like capitalising words, and having yahoo up if I don't know exactly how to spell a word.

I fail to see any issue with increasing vocabularly usage so as to stretch imagination and reach a plateau of understanding....>__>

It's kind of ironic because grammar nazis seem to think that anyone who doesn't use perfect grammar is a moron, but they make themselves look stupid when they act like they can't understand a sentence because of a few errors. I think that someone who can't understand what someone is saying because of a few small errors needs to go back to grade school much more than the person who made those errors. Either that or just lighten up a bit and get out of the house for once.

Jandurin

Well, if we know what's proper, why shouldn't we say what's proper?

If you know whats proper then use it, but not just for the sake of using it. Let me explain with a couple of examples:

Correct Way: Well the "Forumania Complex" is very prevalent here on GS. Its when ....." - Notice how the poster uses the appropriate term, AND THEN continues to explain what said term means. In this example, the poster is using the term, because its part of his vocabulary and its habit for him, but he realizes that its not a common word, so he is explaining to those less knowledgeable.

Wrong Way: If you ask me he is suffering from classic "Illudium Construct Complex". - In this example, the poster is just using the term, just to seem very intelligent. He does not offer and explanation or some insight as to what the term means. If this were a Psychology board, it would be ok, because a certain amount of knowledge is expected, just like how if someone where to say "I have a PS1" on gamespot, its generally accepted that everyone knows the term since its a game website. But in this case , the person who is specializing in a particular field is just using complex words not for the sake of clarity or understanding, but just to show other posters that he knows this word, thus he is merely stroking his ego.

^ The above "terms" arent real Psychology terms...just in case you were wondering :P

becuz wen u tawk lik thith awl tha tim i gits a lil annoyng an maks wat ur try ing 2 sa 3x hrdr thn it shd b.

No, I don't point out that I've majored English to other people. I don't tell them that the way they are typing in a forum is wrong. But when people refuse to type a well constructed sentence out of sheer lack of time to look it over or when they type with damn internet jargon, (lol i lawld cuz tht n00b ws scrb. I r teh 1337) it makes what they are trying to convey much harder than if they had just taken the extra 20 seconds to make a real sentence.

Um...maybe because I am currently majoring in English (more specifically, Journalism)? :?

My use of "big words" comes naturally to me as a writer, as does the need to type in English and not this strange internet language some people seem to speak in. You guys know what I'm talking about. The guys who post n threadz liek dis becuz they can't b botherd 2 type out teh wurds they're tryin 2 say.

Boy was it hard to type that out...

most people on forums I see need to use high tech words and expect maximum punctuation from other people, but why, why have they done this, its only a video game forum, i dont think ur cooler than the other guy that types lik thiz

EXAMPLE:

It must be nice to be so concerned about something so minuscule.

Oh...and next time: mention that you're actually going to be in the WCG in your first post. Then again, you're the only one that cares.

why does this jackwipe need to use the word minuscule, jughead, just TALK IN ENGLISH

qwertyu

I don't mind people using their vocabulary or being punctual with their spelling and grammar and such. But it is when they correct other people that I don't like.

If someone types - "Hey guyz so I wus at the cimena tuday"

I can understand it and so can other people but they will come into the thread just to correct the grammar and nothing on the topic itself, lol, or just to make a joke about it, that is what I think is a bit stuck up.

Yeah, that they're wrong, and show them what they did wrong. But people on here act like you're talking cantonese if you misspell a word or forget to use proper punctuation. If you can't read and understand what "dont" is without the apostrophe, then somethings wrong.

LMAO XD They try to sound intellgent without knowing that those who use big words are usually the ignorant ones. You could get your point across without sounding pretencious too. The most important thing in an essay is to be short and precise because long essays/posts indicates that the writer doesn't know what to talk about exactly.

You do realize that first you have to learn the correct way...and your brain is unscrambling it to the correct way to understand it.....right?

So if someone spells "Technologicel" no one will understand him/her? But it doesn't matter anymore. You win. Banish all of the people who can't spell properly into the pits of hell.

I still can't get over "minuscule" being considered a high tech word. It's kind of like television, you know. I mean, it's been around for a while. It's not like some of those other words that only rich people have because the manufacturing cost is still very high or something.

[QUOTE="Invisible_Kid2"] If a kid in the 3rd grade doesn't spell "computer" right, or doesn't put a comma in the right spot, it's the teachers job to tell the kid that his/her paper is 100% unreadable? Invisible_Kid2

They knock the grade down and correct it. You know...so the child learns the right way.;)

You know what. You're right. Screw the kids, and screw the people who can't spell right.

Because nothing denotes success like a mistake filled paper.

Oh I don't need your verification of "winning". Nonetheless, there IS a spellcheck.;)

Which is why if you can't spell you lose at life eh? Everyone who has a great life was the spelling bee champ of his or her class.

Why are you in an uproar about a comparatively trivial issue?

In your thread title, "why" should have a capital "W" and "english" should have a capital "E".
