Why do people praise non-mainstream music here so much?

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Yet they are both the same genre....;)LJS9502_basic

That doesn't make them similar.

Outkast and Young Jeezy are in the same genre, yet they sound nothing alike.

In your opinion of course.....

Yes, but do you disagree with the notion that there can be disimilar arists in the same genre?

Long as you keep it to your opinion and not try to state it as facts....

Perhaps it's because everyone here prefers to listen to original music (don't tell me Rise Against is original  ), or different genres, or just has a different taste?

It's not really that difficult to understand.

I never tried to state it as a fact. I shouldn't have to write IMO after everything.

Just because you can't tell the difference between opinion and facts does not mean I have the same problem.

But you didn't answer my question: do you agree or disagree with the notion that there can be disimilar artists under a genre "umbrella".

Genres all have some similarity. I suppose on a surface look similarities may not be apparent....

Yes, genres do have similarities (but then again, there are also similarties across genres), but in the case of some artists from the same genre, the differences outweigh the similarities.

Blue October and Nickelback are not exactly polar opposites.....

You and your music threads, it feels like everyday you are trying to defend your music taste :|

Nickelback and Blue October are just bad, really bad. You'll one day understand ;)

the_plan_man

When did I ever say I liked Nickelback. I simply said in the Nickelback thread that they're not as bad as some bands people listen to on here, but by no means praised them.

As for Blue October, I think they actually do have really good music...they just don't cater to a musically "elite" crowd, and actually have emotion in their songs...unlike many indie groups like AWOLNATION or Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes that people "rave" about.

I confused you with senor_dweedle, who made the nickelback thread. OOPS:oops:

Also Greyseal and Lj, give it a break already....

[QUOTE="the_plan_man"] No, it feels like work because the majority of the music I dig through that "isn't mainstream" sounds just as bad or worse than what I hear on the radio on a regular basis. Only occasionally when I sift through all the "non-mainstream" music do I find something I actually enjoy. :? And yeah, usually non-mainstream bands sound similar to a band that is already a whole lot bigger.BuryMe

Underground artists generally have more freedom than mainstream ones, they can do pretty much anything with their music without an idiot telling them to write generic 4 cord acoustic love songs an order to appeal to more people. Nobody should get in the way of an artist's goals and visions. You obviously weren't listening to the right bands.

Just about all the music I listen to could be considered mainstream, but pretty much none of it is 4 cord love songs...

Man, all the pop fans in this thread seem to to get butthurt very easily. I am very use to critics bashing the some of the music I listen to, do I spam them with angry letters? Major record labels force bands to be "safe" with their music. The big cooperate fat cats don't care about music and artistry. Money aways comes first from a business standpoint. Why are people here attempting to argue otherwise? I am sure many of the bands you listen to are successful due to their accessibility to the average person, that's my whole argument.

I can kind of see where you both are coming from. Many genres do indeed share similar characteristics to one another. But, many times they can differ too. Like, take for example, your favorite band (or I assume :P) The Cure, an alternative rockband (which is also one of my favorites), and compare it to another "alternative rock"band My Chemical Romance. While they do share some basic qualities, are under the same "umbrella"genreand are not polar opposites of one another, overall they vary greatly in the way they sound and what kind of audience they go for.If my friend asked me about The Cure, I would not say, "Oh, they'relike My Chemical Romance.";)

Alternative is a broad term. Which is why discussing Blue October and Nickelback I used the sub genre. MCR can be classified further as post hard rock or pop punk...neither of which describe The Cure....which were post punk or early goth.

A Kovenant fan! You don't see many of those around these parts. That in your sig is my favorite album by them. But then again, the only other album I like by them is Animatronic.

Because they're hipsters. They're the same people that wear ironic clothes and claim that nobody appreciates the genius of [insert obscure band] like they do. Evidently they fail to realize that mainstream is not a music genre at all, but how well known or popular a band/artist is...

Because the majority of mainstream music is overrated and it sucks. Plain and simple. There will be a few songs that are actually pretty good but other than that, majority of it is terrible.
