Reading Shakespeare is not something that can easily be reproduced by movies or video games.Allicrombie

Just make them play or watch something really f***ing boring and tedious. It has the same effect.

You don't learn from them because you don't want to learn from them. We read 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, etc. in high school. I didn't read them, because I didn't do my work. But I've read them in the past few years and they're easily my favorite books and I've read most of what those authors have written. There's TONS to be learned from literature. If you don't see it, then I pity you. I really do.

The problem is that schools tells kids WHAT they have to read. I used to be a huge reader until I got to the age where schools told us what we had to read and then made us write papers on said books. It completely killed my love of reading and I know it's the case for many others.

I simply cannot understand someone's lack of desire to read, but there again I have a degree in English Literature so perhaps I am not the most objective here :D It is an abstract thing the way we learn from reading, however I will try to explain how I feel about it. Reading expands your horizons. You can visit places that you may never visit in your own life, fantastic or real. You can be any person you want to be, and importantly understand how that person works, their motivations, fears, desires etc. I truly believe that reading will expand your vocabulary, and help you build and understand your own value system & beliefs. Literature & the Arts in general are important IMO, stories are the basis of our culture. The arts are what creates our culture. If science is about understanding the beauty around us then literature etc. is about trying to recreate the beauty that surrounds us. I think that is important. Literature can provide social commentary or help understand the motivations of a particular historical moment. Finally, language is beautiful. Older works of literature are fascinating to understand the etymology of certain words and in return begin to understand the power and value of some of those words. Some of the great poems are works of art, the language in them is beautiful and incredibly complex. I think that life would be a very dull place without literature.

Because Assassins creed will tell you of the History of one of the worlds grandest churches and the Orthodox that built it and used it and how it fell to the Ottomon turks.

Philokalia

But it will tell you about the vast international conspiracy throughout mankind's history.

it's a racket to make publishers rich and give those that order the books kickbacks of government dollars, the books contain valuable info but when I was in grade school they never had us go through any significant portion of them, that was then though, now schools are struggling, just last year I asked a friend of mine's son to show me his jr high school math book and it wasn't even a book, instead they were given these horribly written magazines on basic algebra some college literature courses are just as bad, they make us buy stuff like "the collected works of..." for $30 and then we only read one story out of it that we could have just google'd, good teachers though would just have us pick up course packets they put together themselves, copyrights be damned

[QUOTE="goobertaco45"]Some of the books that students have to read in school aren't even English. Old English is barely English at all, they feel like completely different languages.LJS9502_basic

You have never had to read anything in Old English for school (unless you're studying Old English).

Not true. We had to read Beowulf....which is Old English...and I was not studying Old English.

I seriously doubt you were reading 'Beowulf' in Old English.

I love to read books, their great. However school for me has almost been a universally horrible experience reading books. Not only do I have to read books that I hate, but they do this nonsense where a whole class of like 20 kids takes turns reading paragraphs or so, PLEASE tell me who in their right minds thinks thats a good idea ? dkdk999

The proper word is they're when talking about books being great.

A teacher at my old highschool didn't force a particular book on his students. Each student could pick between five that worked into the genre we were studying. There would usually be three to four groups reading seperate books and it was a crap load of work for the teacher, but nobody ever coplained about what they were reading. He even let us read those "bad banned books." I worked myself into his class for three years. I especially enjoyed advance Lit. It's probably because of him that I became an english major.

Hmm. I wonder if he's been fired yet.

English LIt. Look dude I was there. I know what we read. And the fact that you sit here and argue makes you seem rather foolish. Either you're arguing for the sake of arguing or it really pains you to be wrong on the internet. Either way it's beyond ridiculous. Like I said....I don't care what you believe. I know I"m correct. Your English lit class had you reading books in a dead language rather than in modern English translations?

Reading books is good for you. It's a good healthy attainable challenge for the student to expand their reading capacity and page count. Movies and video games? Schools already do use movies. Video games would be too expensive and wouldn't be as educational. What's the assignment? Beat Dante Must Die mode? I suppose that game already gives you a score. S-rank = A+ Yeah, just read your book.

What school did you go to? Seriously. I want to know what public school teaches its students languages than haven't been used for 800 years. Might consider moving and enrolling my kids there if I ever decide to have any.

It's not even a matter of being an easy or difficult read. It would have been an incomprehensible read. Why would a High School have their students read a text in a language they would not understand? A High School would obviously provide the students with a translation.

[QUOTE="worlock77"] Bull-f*cking-sh*t. That'd be like me claiming to have read the Old Testament in its original language while having never studied Hebrew.LJS9502_basic
You mean Greek?

The Old Testament was written in Hebrew. The New Testament was written in Greek.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] I WAS in the advanced class.;)LJS9502_basic

So what advanced class has you reading Old English without studying the language?

English LIt. Look dude I was there. I know what we read. And the fact that you sit here and argue makes you seem rather foolish. Either you're arguing for the sake of arguing or it really pains you to be wrong on the internet. Either way it's beyond ridiculous. Like I said....I don't care what you believe. I know I"m correct. So run along now and find another pointless argument to indulge in. You have nothing to offer here but nuh uh..... /discussion

Why would you read a book that isn't even in English for an English literature class?

Can you honestly read that?

I think schools should give you a greater option of what to read, but they should still definitely require it.

Because the books that they make you read are nearly 100% allegories about something different.

There already are games out there that are being used to help teach in school. It may not be fully wide spread but they are out there and being used but its still an emerging market and these things take time. As far as school making you read books, they make you read cause thats the only way to learn how to read. There are too many young folk how read beneath their grade level. Watching a movie isn't gonna improve your reading skills. It can educate you in other ways but without the ability to read at a respectable level you are all but handicap in todays world. Are some of the books boring, yea, but thats more on your particular teacher and board of educators then it is on the system as a whole. I remember some teachers gave us boring things to read and others gave us books to read that I fell in love with. Just find better teachers.

My high school made us read a certain amount of books every year and said that we would lose 200 points if we didn't read any. Over the course of 4 years I only read a total of 3 books and passed all of my english classes with A's and B's. Lol I should have failed those classes. Guess I got lucky.

High School seems to be designed in such a way that students can pass with minimum effort.

Actually, I'd say that about some college courses as well.
