My high school made us read a certain amount of books every year and said that we would lose 200 points if we didn't read any. Over the course of 4 years I only read a total of 3 books and passed all of my english classes with A's and B's. Lol I should have failed those classes. Guess I got lucky.
GreySeal9
High School seems to be designed in such a way that students can pass with minimum effort.
If that were the case, I should have been able to graduate on my birthday. Sadly that isn't true as I hated English class the last three years I was in school and preferred to sleep (due to catching a buzz on the way to Vo-Tech and again at lunch before the last two classes I had to take) in class (I did take tests and such though) and not do my homework.

Well, you still have to do your homework lol. I'm just saying that you don't have to try particularly hard to pass in High School. That being said, the same can be said for many college courses.

I would believe him if he said that he read the Old English version of Beowulf just for kicks and didn't understand any of it. But to say that a high school class, even an advanced one, had the students read a non-translated Old English version of Beowulf? No fvcking way. I'm looking at my Norton Anthology of English Literature, which is what we used to read Beowulf in my Survery of English Literature class in college, and the version of Beowulf in there is a translation.
So, if even a college-level English lit textbook uses a translation, why would a High School teacher have their students read it in Old English?

Why would the teacher "tell you what the crap meant" when they could have handed out a translated version, so that he/she and the students could read through the material and analyze it together? Seems like a pretty inefficient and nonsensical way to teach.
I mean, if you have your heart set on sticking to this story, go ahead, but I would think you would atleast have to understand why it doesn't seem believable.
The Students get to choose what book they should read. But the teacher must approve of it. Like lets say a Senior and High-school wants to read a child's book, It would get rejected because it is not at his reading level. Or if a middle-school student picks an advanced book the teacher would let him change it if it was to much for him.denis231
Sometimes teachers let students choose their own books for reading projects, but most of the time the teacher needs to choose the book because she/he can hardly build lessons plans around everybody's chosen books.

Would I? I don't generally do that unless I have the proof to the contrary. And while it was a public school I did tell you it was for an advanced class. They do have those here. I wasn't in with the general student body. From what I remember the language was odd. Perhaps it might not have been as old as I thought...but it was definitely NOT modern English by any stretch. :A very sick laugh: How disgusting. Wait until you grow up and maybe you'll have a different view. Why do schools make students read books? The books that are assigned in school are incredibly boring. I have no problem with reading in general and if reading books is a hobby of your that is fine. Its just that the books that schools make students read are so incredibly boring. What makes the "classics" classics? Some of the books that students have to read in school aren't even English. Old English is barely English at all, they feel like completely different languages. I don't see why students can't learn from some other form of media such as movies, television, or video games. All of those each feature sophisticated plots, characters and symbols. As I am sure most of you on this website might agree or feel similarly, I feel like I learn better when I am actually doing rather than listening. When I read the words in a book, it just slips right past me. In one ear and out the other. But when I play a video game and experience what is happening for myself, it clicks in my brain and I don't just remember it, I learn it. Similarly, when I watch a movie, I see exactly why is happening, so I don't miss any important details.
I understand some people like reading and that some people learn very well from reading, but why can't schools use movies and video games as well to teach students? Or perhaps at the least, video games can be used to supplement teaching. For example, I was playing the Assassin's Creed games at the same time I was learning about the Byzantine Empire in my World History class. Playing through the game and actually climbing the Hagia Sophia and killing the Borgias and exploring the Colisseum, when I learned about all those things in class, I was making connections that really made me more interested in what I was learning, and that helped me learn and do better on the tests. I think schools should implement methods of teaching through video games and movies and put less emphasis on books.

Old English is a long dead language that's more closely related to Icelandic than it is to the language we use. At best you read a translation that was Late Middle English (examples: Shakespeare, the King James Bible), but more probably you read a modern translation done in imitation of that LME style (as so many translators of ancient works tend to favor).

Prescribed readings can help you develop abstract thought, and more importantly equip you with the skill to pay attention to (and learn from) text which may not necessarily interest you very much. That's an essential skill to develop. It may also help develop your imagination. You're perfectly capable of imagining what you're reading in action - you can even cast yourself as one of the characters. Fail to develop that ability, and you'll end up like our good friend, Bart.
However, you are correct that many teachers are not quick to adapt to new technology that can help students learn. Research has shown pretty conclusively that most people learn best by application of knowledge, and so an interactive component to presentation of material should be incorporated if possible.

Not the schools
