Because it's incredibly hard to be self critical. The US government - like most world governments past and present - acts in its country's best interest. If you're not from that country, you're not going to like it. In the current geopolitical situation, the US is one of the most prominent players. It's press is open and relatively free, so unlike other nations like China and Russia, its dirty laundry is usually aired for the world to see. Like most past and current powers, there's plenty of it, too.

What's amusing is the same people that are so critical of the US, are also blind to their own country's transgressions/flaws. Just as its hard for americans to admit their country is less than perfect, most other people have that same problem. It's easier to hate on something different/separate, then be self critical.

I don't want to get into some tit for tat argument over which country is the worst. My own has plenty of flaws.

sonicare

Pretty much nailed it...All I have to add is if so many people hate US why does it have the most immigration coming in?

Because some countries feel we should not get involved with their issue quite frankley

yet when a natural disaster happens guess who is one of the first to help..

fueled-system

How does the second excuse or justify the first (getting involved in other countries issues)?

Ever tried to immigrate to Italy or the like? The roles are closed. Impossible to gain citizenship.

I think a lot of the people/countries that lodge complaints get a lot of the attention.

I think there are a lot of people that like seeing the American Flag coming their way.

Here in England a lot of people I know dislike the US because of how patriotic a lot of people over there are (a trait generally looked down upon as a sign of weak minded and easily manipulated)

toast_burner
I find that interesting since I've noted many of the English I've encountered are extremely proud of being English. Which boils down to the same thing......

That wasn't the message of my post....economic and influence. Which the US still has. Considering the US gives out billions of dollars a year in aid....probably trillions actually....I'd not say they are a bully. Were we a bully we'd invade and make new countries ours. We don't do that. Wedo not keep the country`. Look at how the British Empire handled things for instance.....

Very true, in Portugal you have to live here for 7 years to be considered a citizen, before that you have slightly limited rights.

Most people in Europe do think prejudiced about the US. I used to but know I know better.

Still, the US is at the very top of enviromental damage. Don't get me wrong but a US citizen produces 23,5t of Co² a year - a european citizen 10,5t.

At the world climate apex oboma told to save the enviroment, but wasn't willing to do any changes on his side. I mean, wtf? Still economics are important, but not even ready for changes?

Part of that may be geography. The US is a sprawling country where its population is not as concentrated as Europe's. You may be able to walk or bike to work, but average commutes in the US tend to be fairly high. If you compare the US to a similar set up - e.g. Canada - you will see a similar per capita consumption of natural resources.

You're one of the few people that can separate the two. A lot of people just associate the two together so dislike of the US government's foreign policy translates into hatred of everything american.

I could be specific yet it would take me all day. Political and economical influence. A small example. Iran refused to let US transport oil across their territory, the US didn't like that so they orchestrated a coup and overthrew the democratically elected leader of Iran and installed a dictator friendly to them so they could transport the oil. That attitude of do as I say or else is common by the US. It also shines the hypocrisy of the US government that talks so much about democracy and freedom but only when it works for them.

Even Americans don't like their own government, so how can you expect anyone else to do that?

As for me, there's a grand total of like five countries I actually think are well governed. The U.S. isn't on there.

I'm from Europe (Belgium), and i do not like the us for the following reasons: religious influence (one of the most developed nations in the world, yet its also one of the most fanatic nations of the world, the president can not be elected when he's an atheist lol, creatonisme is actually debatable, ...)
very conservative popluation (prob. due to my first dislike (religion) gay people are still looked down upon and a lot of americans would deny them their rights on marriage and child adoption, friggin abortion, war on drugs, easy to get guns (16 was it? while you guys can only buy a beer when your what... 21? lol))
Corperate environment (the rich get richer (look how you guys really don't want the rich to pay taxes), the poor get poorer and sicker (a lot of you americans really hate the idea that you can get free (quality) education and healthcare)
Republicans (if they win the upcomming election i think the world will come to an end, really... (global warming, shifting of economie and global powers))
Anti-science (again! because of religious influence, the american scientific communties are tied with their hand on their back to find funding for their research: (stem cells!)
...

But I also like the united states: sciencetific progress (a lot of sciences have to thank the us for breakthroughs in their fields, for example: i'm a researcher in neuropsychology, and a lot of the information from my eduction was from american neurlogists and psychologists) => yes i realise i made a contradiction but thats how your country is, plain weird.
Art (their are lots of americans artists who are very talented, you guys should be proud on that)

Well, i can't think about anything more (i really try) :P

Also, american liberals get my upmost respect, for keeping their sanity, I'm always shocked in disbelief when i read something about America on topics of gays/drugs/religion influence/death penality/guns/etc...

Your country is just so weird and unreal for most europeans (those crazy americans :D)

I don't believe Americans do not like their government structure. They may be unhappy with specific actions depending on their own ideology, of course. But then what country is completely happy with their government?

Its not because we burned people in the medieval times for religious reasons, that we still do it now (remember europe in the past, includes my forefathers AND american forefathers), its easy to point out your finger and say "hey you guys did some crazy stuff... 1000 years ago" :P (America had ritual sacrifice in that time ;))

But in the "Now", europe is very secular. about 80% of my country's population is atheist (most non-atheists are immigrated muslims and suchs).
My country also has one of the best (free) educational systems in the world (one of the reasons why a lot of belgians don't believe in a "God" anymore).

We also havve our downsides, but hey, religious influence isn't one of them :)

Get used to doing that, a lot.

Palantas

I have noticed he tends to ignore the way he's taken a conversation....

[QUOTE="parkurtommo"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] You did not post facts. You said you wouldn't. You can't list one name and then state you've been discussing facts. Even that mention was done without any specific statement.:|

LJS9502_basic

I'm just making an observation here, but that is really desperate.

Really? Please reread his first two posts and my responses. He flat out stated he'd post nothing specific. Which means he posted ONLY his opinion and bias.

Only for LJ the Mossadeq coup was an opinion :P

But that's ignoring what's important here, which is debating, using facts. He used a valid fact and you ignored it just because of something he said earlier?? Very strange indeed.

[QUOTE="kuraimen"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]That wasn't the message of my post....economic and influence. Which the US still has. Considering the US gives out billions of dollars a year in aid....probably trillions actually....I'd not say they are a bully. Were we a bully we'd invade and make new countries ours. We don't do that. Wedo not keep the country`. Look at how the British Empire handled things for instance.....LJS9502_basic

Invading and taking a country is not the only way to be a bully. The US behaves like a bully in lots of ways not just invading countries.

Ah yes....the esoteric yet non specific.

Where did you mentioned Mossadeq coup in there? Looks like your opinion to me.

Not quite. I told him his comments were not specific and they weren't. Then he said he wouldn't get specific. Then he listed one name without much behind it. How would you respond if my only specific comment to you was ice cream for example? Using facts one needs to lay the groundwork of a discussion. He has to provide a context.

Bros89

IDK where you get your info lol...maybe you actually have to live here? Religious people are a minority, real ones anyway, who actually follow their teachings...Gays are considered funny and cool and made to be popular, they have TV shows all over the US...Guns you have to be 18 or 21and while some states are easy going on this most will throw you in jail over tiny stipulations on gun laws, 10 years for every bullet in an automatic for example in Louisana...Your right about the corporations and the rich staying rich thats for damn sure but i thought it was everywhere?Science is Science and they are also blatantly pissing Religious fanatics here by its works and statements but thats your statement I disagree with the most...my opinion about it all? I think either the new and improved young people in america mostly dont vote and only the old fashioned and old people do....Or I think it doesnt matter who we vote for and that its all pre-planned whats going to happen....but for the most part the Goverment doesnt represent the majority of Americans very well, Ill agree with that.

Palantas wants ice cream as well. I imagine people in countries with a shortage of ice cream dislike the US. Time to get ice cream.

I like how you're taking traits that are almost entirely restricted to the south (rampant creationism, extreme conservatism etc.) and attributing it to the entirety of the US. This is why I absolutely loath the OT game of "my country is better than your country". It just devolves down to users who don't really know anything about the issue simply spouting the worst stereotypes and extreme examples they can find.

I always find it falls into the philosophy that "you will find what you want". If you believe certain things about a group of people, then you will always find things to support that view.

You are right, but in my defense: The image i have from the US is an image build upon information that i have received through my subjective media.
Although i know a lot of the US cities are pretty liberal (New York for example), the extreme viewpoints stand out (and will receive more attention in the media) + you guys voted for bush 2 times :P (joke)
