The US hardly polices the world.. It is basically the main force of Western imperialism for the past 60 years.. Before that it was Great Britain and France...

Well I still think Great Britain did it better, simply because their navy was so vaste they effectively ended piracy world wide more or less during their reign.

I like how you're taking traits that are almost entirely restricted to the south (rampant creationism, extreme conservatism etc.) and attributing it to the entirety of the US. This is why I absolutely loath the OT game of "my country is better than your country". It just devolves down to users who don't really know anything about the issue simply spouting the worst stereotypes and extreme examples they can find.

Bros89

You are right, but in my defense: The image i have from the US is an image build upon information that i have received through my subjective media.
Although i know a lot of the US cities are pretty liberal (New York for example), the extreme viewpoints stand out (and will receive more attention in the media) + you guys voted for bush 2 times :P (joke)

There was a big controversy and lots of talk about cheating in the 2nd election and they refused to do a recount onastate that won it for himand they wouldnt countsoldiers overseas votes either...and the 1st one was when I first moved to the US but your right that one SEEMED legit and was a mistake lol

I stopped right there. Religion has not been legislated in the US. Europe was much more punishing of religious deviance than the US has ever been. In fact....the US has NEVER supported one religion.

Did he say legislated? Do you deny that no atheist can be elected to be President of the US?

Its not because we burned people in the medieval times for religious reasons, that we still do it now (remember europe in the past, includes my forefathers AND american forefathers), its easy to point out your finger and say "hey you guys did some crazy stuff... 1000 years ago" :P (America had ritual sacrifice in that time ;))

But in the "Now", europe is very secular. about 80% of my country's population is atheist (most non-atheists are immigrated muslims and suchs).
My country also has one of the best (free) educational systems in the world (one of the reasons why a lot of belgians don't believe in a "God" anymore).

We also havve our downsides, but hey, religious influence isn't one of them :)

How many black people are there in the U.S.? And how many atheists are there? And how many minorities are there that can emphasize with black people when it comes to lack of representation at the Presidential level, and how many of those minorities can also empathize with an atheist? Even with Obama, most people were of the opinion that they'd believe he could get elected when they saw it, the same will hold true for women, atheists, Muslims, and any other minority that hasn't broken that barrier yet, we'll believe it when we see it.

Well I still think Great Britain did it better, simply because their navy was so vaste they effectively ended piracy world wide more or less during their reign.

Great Britain conducted the bulk of the slave trade, is probably only rivaled by the Spanish in terms of killing natives before the U.S. was formed, started drug wars for economic gain, murdered Indian politicians and overthrew the entire Indian political system for economic gain, killed Irish civilians, killed Aboriginese in Australia, forced Africans off their land and into the interior away from the resources they depended on to live, and paved the way for horrible oppression in south central African lands. As far as I'm concerned imperialism is imperialism and it's always bad. The only people who did it best are the ones who did it the worst, i.e. didn't build a successful empire, which I guess would probably be the Dutch. Even then, they were integral in starting the slave trade, the only reason they qualify as the best of the worst is because they weren't able to sustain it as long as Great Britain.

Plus, I think you have to consider a lot of the U.S.'s crimes of imperialism to also be Great Britain's, as the American settles who carried out these crimes can also be seen as British citizens who, for reasons unrelated to imperialism, decided to become seperatists. They were the same people, just masquerading under a different banner.

Also, the French were far less violent in mainland North America than other powers, as they mostly depended on trade and therefore needed to maintain relations with the natives. However, this wasn't because they felt any moral obligation, it was just a matter of business, and they were plenty brutal in places such as the Dominican Republic.

I tend to agree, any country with enough power has always inflicted its will on others, the U.S. have just been the best at it. It was easier from the 50s to the 70s, 80s, due to the lack of easy global communication. England did it for a long time also as did many other countries.

Just because bunch of other crooks are involved doesn't make it any better. In my lifetime they have bombed the following countries, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Yugoslavia, Panama, Pakistan, Yemen and Afghanistan. Does not seem very friendly. Also in my lifetime they have supported the Contras, the Afghan Mujahedin, The War on Drugs in Mexico and Colombia, KLA basically a who's who of terrorist organizations in the world. It is high time we follow President Gorge (the good one ) advice and mind our business.

Always perplexed by this idea that Americans have that foreigners hate you for you freedom. Do you actually think anyone at this very moment is sitting in his Yurt, just stewing over you freedom? It's absurd. The only enemies that America has ever created were due to meddling in their or their comrade's affairs.

Well thank you for saying what i said in different words. We have the world's most powerful overall military to declare the diversed and thus not morality based freedoms onto the world abroad. That.. and in order to stop us you'd need to make us not exist which would mean you wouldn't either when all say and done after the dust cleared. That is why i think many hate us.

US government arrogance, and indeed messing with things that are none of their business.
Though you guys think people in europe or so, only hate on the US government. That is not true. We criticize our own government also. And those of our neighbours.

You see, my government provided weapons to the leaders of Egypt, Lybia and Cyria. That's just one example of why I don't hold my own government in high regard.
USA isn't the only one who profitted from the mess in the middle east. I have a vague idea of where all our wealth comes from.

So in short I think people in the EU (don't know about asia/australia?) tend to critisize governments and authority more than in the USA in general.

Also that weird concept of specifically USA being free (of the natives) or others being jelly is incredibly arrogant. I think that arrogance seeped into USA population through mass propaganda and it's very insulting to the world.
I live in a 'free country' too. I think most of us do.
I can get a pill for suicide, get drugs legally, get married with the same sex, get porn on my TV or go to the hookers. No problem. So I think a lot of people would think it is arrogant to claim the USA is specially free.

Probably our whole "world police" attitude, which I dont necessarilly like... but when there is a natural disaster somewhere in the world, who is the first to step in? US. People can hate all they want on the economy, policies, jobs, whatever; but its not just the US, every country is having huge issues right now.

well...at first in the 1920's arab's loved the US government and the west in general. however when there was die hard support for isreal I'm pretty sure that kinda soured things up, then the attack on Iraq killing over a million arab's probably isn't exactly friendly. as for the rest of the world.... I tend to agree, a lot of claims from the US that they are the free-est nation on the planet, but i also noticed that a lot of european countries have more "freedoms". Like freedom of taking (soft)drugs, freedom of same-sex marriage, freedom of euthanasia, freedom of stem cell research, etc..

I also agree that in europe we can easly criticize our own governments (the media does it all the time lol), but i don't know if thats any difference in the US.

Just the South? Don't like 40% of Americans deny evolution? If that is all the South, then the South is a pretty giant chunk and should not be dismissed as "just" the South.

dsmccracken

Where the hell did you get that statistic? From the Guardian? If it's that lulzy Gallup (which has proven to be as biased as FOX news towards the Conservatives) poll, they don't even tell you the number of Americans polled or where they were from. It's absolutely laughable to try and sum up the beliefs of over 300,000,000 people with such statistics, regardless.

I don't know why. People who understand Government may have a reason, but alot of people in my school hate them, despite not having a clue what they do. Most kids don't know, but want to act smart by saying they suck.

Plenty of reasons I guess, some warranted and some not. Our foreign policy since WW2 has angered a lot of people, and rightfully so. Another reason would be that we're the sole super power, the leading exporter of culture, and the economic hub of the world, which gives us massive exposure. Being in the spot light is bound to piss some people off.

As much as i hate the US government for all the stupid and selfish things they have done over the years I'd rather the US stay in power as the worlds largest Superpower even with all their faults then let China take over.
