Actually, they were apparently first made popular in Japan. Probably the most common ones in the U.S. are cheap BIC brand ones. They are okay, but I wouldn't especially recommend them. There are lead refills you can buy for most mechanical pencils, rather than having to replace the whole pencil. Also, many of them (like the BIC ones there) hold several leads at once and come with more than one in them.

if it ain't broke don't fix it. i like the feel or wood as opposed to metal / plastic. and they do the job just fine.

the lead in mechanical ones breaks constantly and they're over expensive, you really don't need a pencil unless you're doing art

Best pencil ever. I prefer everything about wooden pencils over mechanical ones. The price, the feel, the durability; it's the perfect non-ink writing utensil.

I only use the wooden pencils on standardized tests because they usually want you to. Other from that, I am strictly a mechanical pencil user. I like the way they write and they're just easier to deal with.

Nothing beats a sharpened Dixon Ticonderoga #2 soft pencil. It's a beast for drawing and writing. I just wish my school had better pencil sharpeners. I'm too lazy to bring my own. Mechanical pencils are okay, I don't mind them. They always stay sharp, but when I draw with them, it isn't the same as a ticonderoga. Plus, the eraser gets worn out faster.

In high school, it was a personal preference. Just prefered writing with wooden pencils rather than mechanical ones, issues with the lead breaking often with the mechanical pencils along with lead width, plus the fact that wood pencils just felt more comfortable to use. Now, since pencil sharpeners are rare at my college, I've switched to mechanical for the convenience.

I prefer mechanical ones. I tend to write best with a sharp pencil, so with a mechanical one I don't have to keep sharpening it.

Wooden pencils are horrible. Nothing is as bad as starting out with nice, small, easy to read words when the pencil is sharp and by the end of the page you are writing huge fat letters because the pencil is so dull. Everything is consistent with a mechanical pencil and you can fill it up with enough lead to last for months. The inconvenience of a broken piece of lead is nothing compared to the inconvenience of having to sharpen a wooden pencil.

I suspect wooden pencils will always be around because artists have a legitimate use for them and people like to get a sense of sophistication from using something "natural." There are always people who will want to show off how "classic" they are. Its the same reason some people still roll their own cigarettes and shave with straight razors.

I use them every now and again just because. Sometimes you forget if you have enough graphite in the mechanical pencil.

Why argue about pencils? The thing we should really be arguing about is pens. I haven't used a Pencil in 2 years, yes im being completely honest. Our teahers tell us to write in ink. But the only time i use a pencil is during state tests.

I use mechanical pencils because when you write all of your lines will look the same. Also you don't have to sharpen them. The pink erasers on wood pencils suck also.

Perhaps for an artist, it feels and glides better.... just assuming....DJCUEBALL

Actually it's because we can turn them on their sides and use the broad edge of the graphite. This creates a much smoother effect. Graphite sticks could also work, but they're messy.

The balance of weight along a wooden pencil, be it H, HB, or B is just perfect. Also, they're sumptuously smooth for writing with. Mechanical pencils just feel too... Mechanical I guess. I've grown accustomed to wooden pencils, they're comfortable, easy to write with, and light. I couldn't see myself ever using a mechanical pencil tbh.

Yeah, but I said I wasn't really talking about for art; I just meant for writing. Okay, maybe that's not exactly what I said, but it was kind of implied.

i hate reflling on mechanical pencils..., the lead tends to break more easily and i always end up clicking it/ playing with it/ trying to put the lead back in to put the pencil away only to find i need to use it again so now i have to click even mroe.

It also jams. and the reg. pencil can be sharpened using scissors if i dont have a sharpener while the mech one needs to be refilled with lead i might not have. but then i might not have a scissor either so both are just as inconvenient.

i find them just as handy as a regular pencil so i use them based on whatever i have... but i like the REAL pencils more
