America: Not the best country in the world. A big nono. :|Masinai
what is then?
to tc: i can go tell bush to go **** off and not die, thats more than some countries can say
[QUOTE="Maniacc1"]I blame our lame history teaching system that practically idolizes American superiority. yabbicoke
What? Did you go to high school in Texas or something?
No, one state over in New Mexico. :P
Still, a lot of textbooks are pretty one sided and don't mention other possiblities. One example- every textbook basically says Columbus was first to discover the America's, he was a hero, blah, blah, blah. When really he was just another money hungry guy who sailed west.
In Australia I am free to criticise my country without being beaten to death by flag-wielding nutjobs, a freedom which doesn't seem to exist in the US.KG86
nice generalizations there
and yes we can do that here too "without being beaten to death by flag-wielding nutjobs"

The only thing I've seen us Americans do in recent years is talk crap about our country :|

I'm pretty sure other countries have freedom of speach too:| Also why should there be a best country in the world? They all have their ups and downs, why does it have to be a competition?

i think youre exagerating, so lets make a bet, you go try it and if you dont die you stop lieing, if you do die, umm... well way to prove your point
the government is trying to take away more and more rights. But the attitude is still there. Thats what really counts.
The thing is, although its going away we still have more individual rights than other countries.
Most other countries see freedom FROM
we see freedom of. We still have the right to have our own business the way we choose it. Most of europe has no real choice in that realm.
Unfortunately, that is deteriorating in the us as well. Mostly through bs anti-piracy laws, patents, corporate welfare and abuse of copyrights

My teachers always taught the truth about Columbus. We pretty much covered all the terrible things America has done, such as killing Native Americans, the Japanese internment camps, all the Chinese racism during the wild west days, the whole "manifest destiny" bull ****, we even had some debates about current and old U.S. actions. Also in American government we spent plenty of time talking about the flaws in our government.

why shouldnt there be a best counttry in the world, and why shouldnt citizens of their country think theirs is the best?
But what is the point? Its all opinion anyway, why does everything have to be a competition, why cant you just live and say that you love your country? There is no need and no point to saying my country is better than your country. That is just childlike and immature, are you really so insecure that you need to validate your own existance and life where you live by saying your country is the best in the world? If so then that is both pathetic and arrogant.
the problem with that is that most Americans are not entrepreneurs. I guess this gets back to if people are secure in their property in such, but even then, it's indisputable that everyone must be provided for for there to be true freedom. without socialized education, there cannot be equality of employment, and subsequently, no equality of employment or possession of material goods. now, that may mean 'freedom' in that the wealthy are not kept from their spoils, but it ceratinly means inequality when some hard workers live with little bread on their tables while their fat cat bosses reap their benefit. in any event, Americans do not have so much economic oppurtunity as is imagined.the government is trying to take away more and more rights. But the attitude is still there. Thats what really counts.

It's called nationalism. People in countries all over the world have it, and will say the same thing about their respective country if they love it enough.
Teach an ignorant man to love his country and it becomes extreme patriotism=america.
