I'm going to say this before people start saying "because it is more open-minded". The internet has a way of spreading information in a different way than we have had before. Ranging from conspiracy theories, to various sorts of ideals and practices.

It is? I see nothing but religion on OT, the one Atheist trying to persuade everyone that god doesn't exist. Hardly domination but I myself am Atheist and can only assume there are more Atheists on here than religious people because they're doing religious tasks, showing their faith, doing whatever religious people do to prove their faith or something or other... While I browse porn and watch movies, post on forums and whatever I want to do, not what I'm told I have to do.

Because in most societies, in real life it is more accepted to be religious and thus if you're an atheist the only outlet you have where you can freely express anything you believe is the internet.

I think it's what Teenaged says, but i also think it's where you go around on the internet. go around forums or websites that specialize on technology (video games in our case) your gonna see a lot more free thinkers. but go to a dating site, or others you'll find a different set of demographics. and i'm not even saying go to the specific religion forums or date sites either.

There are thousands of religious sites on the internet, the only reason it may seem to dominate is because the places where atheists might gather are the only places you might go.

No, the argument of alternatives are based on science. The argument against religion is largely based on common sense. You can reject religions without buying into scientific alternatives.

I'm not religious myself so I don't mind atheists, but what I never get is what all is there for them to talk about? Many are super vocal about something they don't believe in. If you believe there is no God, afterlife, etc. then what is there to actually talk about other than to get into arguments with religious folk? I don't believe in the toothfairy but I don't need to discuss it with anyone. It just seems odd to me.

or history in my case. not atheist, just simply apatheist/ non-theist. i just don't care anymore.

but organized religion is a farce, largely driven by the demands of the moment and by the men (and sometimes women) of the moment. It is not led by divine will, but rather the other way around then called divine will. above criticism and commentary. for me, history - a lot of corroborated history, has shown me how much of a farce it is when you come to understand how things came to be and how they were understood. for instance the book of genesis is meant to be taught literally, not it's considered an allegory when pressed with the undeniable mountain of evidence.

Every ancient civilization has a creation story, and i used to think that there was something to them all, it's just the obvious did not dawn on me. Where my folks will polk fun at Mayan creation myths and the Greek/Roman ones (and i've been to several old monument/religious sites) but then hold to their own Quranic/Biblical. it didn't dawn on me that they all have it in common because it gives people a sense of their place in the universe, done so out of ignorance.

If you are religious, before you laugh at others creation stories, or go hide behind that magic word of faith, just do a thought experiment... maybe yours is not different from the others you don't accept.

power of faith is evident, from suicide bombers, the human wave tactics of Iran (during the Iran-Iraq war), to the Christians who died for their faith while getting eaten by lions by the Romans. people will go through torture and death for their faith.

but it doesn't lend that particular faith much more truth then the other, it only shows how strong that particular person's faith is and how far their willing to go for the promises in the afterlife, whether it be houra's (virgins) in heaven, or the Elysian fields..

i think ti's a matter of scale really. people don't make legislature or enact war based on a belief in or the promises of a toothfairy if there were such people, Atheists and others would argue with them. To not do so is letting crazy laws pass and acts of madness to go.

I'm with you, I wish both sects would keep to themselves, I don't want my kid to be required to learn religion, however I do want my kids to know OF religion, just don't preach it to me and my kids and we'll get along fine. The last thing I want is my kid to be "brainwashed" with the ideas and beliefs of other people. I find that invasive.

Seems largely because much of the internet is dominated by the younger crowd which tends to be less religious and more liberal. The whole being largely anonymous bit that also aids in that as (at least in the US) Atheists are still looked at as outliers to the point where an openly atheist politician is almost as rare as an openly gay one.

Ok there seems to be a huge white wash in internet.. Where it seems like people are either atheist to the core, or religious zealots that believe things like Noah's Ark as literal.. This is just a observation but it seems like the religious people at least in the internet have radicalized and have lumped in pretty much every one that does not define that narrow views.. That if you accept the Theory of Evolution, you must be a atheist when that is not the case what so ever.. Hell we are seeing this in politics within the United States.

What he actually said is misunderstanding how science works holds everyone back. I don't see how that could be an incorrect statement. Misunderstanding things in general is detrimental while something as important as science is without a doubt going to cause some issues.

Yes religious zealotry holds people back.. One does not need to be atheist to accept things like the Theory of Evolution.. I think this needs to be pointed out, you can be Christian, Muslims, Jewish, Hindu, etc etc and still accept scientific discoveries based upon evidence..

It's science, slave! Shut up and accept the truth! The only reason why we are not driving flying cars around is because of these God loving freaks.

Yes religious zealotry holds people back.. One does not need to be atheist to accept things like the Theory of Evolution.. I think this needs to be pointed out, you can be Christian, Muslims, Jewish, Hindu, etc etc and still accept scientific discoveries based upon evidence..

Unless you are doing wacky experiments on animals I dont know in what way would a theory of evolution help "advance" civilization.

He was not referring to evolution in the statement you're arguing against. He was referring to misunderstanding science as a whole.

What he actually said is misunderstanding how science works holds everyone back. I don't see how that could be an incorrect statement. Misunderstanding things in general is detrimental while something as important as science is without a doubt going to cause some issues.

... I think for starters we need to stop using the term science this way... Because it gets misunderstood and really we can replace the term science in those sentence with any religious doctrine or belief.. Instead the argument should turn to the phrase of the discovery/study/knowledge of our universe/natural world.. The term science in how its being used is confusing people like Champion into thinking its something similar to a religion.. When it is not.
