What he actually said is misunderstanding how science works holds everyone back. I don't see how that could be an incorrect statement. Misunderstanding things in general is detrimental while something as important as science is without a doubt going to cause some issues.[QUOTE="Ace6301"][QUOTE="LOXO7"] It's science, slave! ... I think for starters we need to stop using the term science this way... Because it gets misunderstood and really we can replace the term science in those sentence with any religious doctrine or belief.. Instead the argument should turn to the phrase of the discovery/study/knowledge of our universe/natural world..
You could also replace it with english, mathematics, history or social skills and it would make sense. Those things are a hell of a lot closer to science than religion and if religious people can't see that then that's something they have to deal with. What he actually said is misunderstanding how science works holds everyone back. Science itself claims that it should be "critiqued" so that would be silly.[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"]

Yes religious zealotry holds people back.. One does not need to be atheist to accept things like the Theory of Evolution.. I think this needs to be pointed out, you can be Christian, Muslims, Jewish, Hindu, etc etc and still accept scientific discoveries based upon evidence..
Unless you are doing wacky experiments on animals I dont know in what way would a theory of evolution help "advance" civilization.
The Theory of Evolution is the cornerstone of biology.. And everything related to it.. Our understanding of the theory has helped us cultivate both accidentally and intentionally the breeding of animals and plants for our uses for instance.. If animals did not change over time, if certain factors of selection did not affect the passing on of traits.. Then we would not exist as a society because we depend off things like corn, which we domesticated over thousands of years..

I thought we were talking about the part of it that tries to interpret what happened in ancient history......... What difference does it make? Since you believe in Noah's Ark I am pretty certain you believe in Adam and Eve story.. Yet we have evidence of ancestors living before homosapiens not long back in Earth's history.. Those being Neinderthuls and Cro Magnum men.. Humanesque but clearly not the homosapiens that exist today.. How do you explain them?

lolBecause it's the only place they can go to feel like they can "dominate" other people's opinions. They wouldn't dare do anything like that to someones face.

I think he was trying to imply the threat of physical violence as a possible deterrent for the outright dismissal/disrespect of someone's faith in face-to-face interaction. I do think it's reasonable to assume that many, if not most, people are less argumentative in person than over the internet largely due to this factor.
Of course it's not like I've done a study, but I've seen enough to know that most (sane) people prefer to avoid heated, personal confrontations.
because talking about it in public or with family and friends can cause a lot of issues, especially in the US.

Because the internet is a product of Satan.
Probably because the internet gives people a chance to speak freely about what they normally don't get to, and it's easier to find others who share the same view/opinion to discuss it with.

And he's right. It's fine if you believe in creationism but don't spread that nonsense to children who can't yet fully understand the universe.
You obviously have believeing in God and typical creationism confused. I believe in God, but I also believe that physics and science played a major role in the universe...a process that took billions of years.Incorrect. It's a matter of personal belief, not education. I know plenty of science/biology teachers and even a professor who are all religious... Oh, and the local hobo at my park is an Atheist. The more educated a person is the less likely they are to be religious. .

Sorry but your personal anecdotal evidence will not help you in this instance.

Where did I mention God in my post? lol.
The more educated a person is the less likely they are to be religious. It also follows that people that are educated are more likely to use the internet.
tenaka2
Not necessarily. As mentioned earlier, belief in a religion is a personal choice regardless of one's level of education although I think people more educated are more likely to question religious beliefs.
As for what you said about the internet, you've seen how many idiots there are online. It's not about being educated. People with access to an internet connection are more likely to use the internet. Simple as that.
Because people who spend time on the internet are more exposed to the inconsistencies and logical fallacies of religion. While also having easy access to others with opposing views, and explanations of how the world we see today came unto its own without the need of a supernatural creator.
