Sort of inspired by the topic about alcohol tasting bad, but I thought it is different enough to warrant not bringing up in the other thread.

Anyway, does anyone else think that gasoline actually smells GOOD? Some will disagree, but I know I am not alone here. For many, there is just something very pleasing about the smell of gasoline.

And I find that very strange. Normally, the smell of volatile poisons is nauseating. As an example, the smell of alcohol. And yet, for some reason, gasoline smells good. Yes, gasoline is dangerous, and yes, we are not supposed to inhale that ****. And whenever I do smell gasoline, I make sure to not breathe too much of it in, because it is poisonous. And yet, the simple smell of it is absolutely captivating.

Does anyone know why this is? Why does gasoline smell so good? What is IN IT that smells so good, and WHY do those ingredients smell so delicious?

I use to think the same. Now I dislike the smell. I think the fumes get to you and you start getting psychologically addicted to it.

Yeah, but the thing about gasoline is that it IMMEDIATELY smells good. From the first time I ever smelled that stuff, it smelled AMAZING. So just...I find it unlikely that it smells good because it gets you high. Yes, I can imagine that huffing gasoline fumes might get me high, and that might feel good. But I make sure to not breathe gasoline in, because I know that the fumes are dangerous. So I have NEVER gotten high off of it, but the fumes still smelled awesome from the first moment that I ever smelled it.

Gasoline itself has no smell, but chemicals are added to give it a distinct smell so you know if there is a gas leak.

But it smells fantastic

Isn't that sort of...stupid, though?

Not stupid on your part, I mean stupid on the part of whoever decided to make gasoline smell like that.

Because, if you are adding an aroma in order to let people know that there is a potentially deadly leak, why add a PLEASING aroma? Wouldn't it make more sense to add an aroma that STINKS?

Because, let's just hypothetically pretend that they had instead made gasoline smell like roses. So you pull up into the gas station and you smell roses. Sweet awesome roses. So you sort of linger around smelling the awesome scent. Then you pass out from the fumes. Then the gas station blows up because of a gasoline leak.

Wouldn't it make more sense to add a scent that stinks like hell? You know, like the scent of rotting corpses being eaten by maggots in the Florida summer heat. You pull into a gas station and get hit in the face by THAT smell, you'll get the hell out of there ASAP. Then, when the gas station blows up, theres's nobody around, because the place already smelled like death.

Permanent markers, yeah. Which scares me, because so many kids are in reach of sharpies and crap.....why do they gotta smell like that? And WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE SNIFF THEM? "Hmm this smells good lemme take huge whiffs over and over until I get addicted and then die from withdrawal after my parents cry over telling me how bad it is for me."

Well not necessarily, I think the whole idea behind it is to creat a sent that is quite unique. I've never really encountered anything that smelled like gasoline other than the gas its self. If you were to make it smell like rotten eggs or something similar, then one might mistake it for some garbage or some other waste/sewage.
Also, the smell might linger in the exhaust fumes from the vehicle if it was such a strong sent. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, it's just that most gas stations don't actually smell like gasoline. So when I pull into a gas station that DOES smell like gasoline, I sort of think that something isn't right.

As far as why the gas station is blowing up, I don't know. But I watch a lot of movies. And in the movies, whenever there is a gasoline leak, the gas station blows up. So I guess I'm just confusing fantasy for reality.

But in either case, we still really aren't supposed to be breathing that stuff in. If they made gasoline smell bad, most gas stations still wouldn't stink, since most gas stations aren't saturated with gasoline fumes.
