You guys do know that Nirvana started the whole emo thing right? From a person who knows grunge rock like if it was his life, Nirvana was the first band to popularize emo, thats what grunge was at the time, a mix of metal and the blues with some punk influence. Of course it didnt have the sad tone that it has today but thats what grunge was, the emo of that time. I mean look at the smashing pumpkins early lyrics, how more emo could you get? The only difference is that grunge rock was actualy good. :P

Emo's have given otheres a bad name. People like myself love to dress in black. Everybody can agree, that sometimes or always dressing in black can be cool. Though with emos in the world, most people that see you in black automatically think you're an emo. I've always got people thinking I'm dracula or a sad emo. I'm neither *though, being dracula isn't so bad*.

What makes me really mad to the point of blowing up, is emo music. Typical rock for today, is basically music that sounds like fall out boy. At the end of transformers, I hear emo music?! What is up with that? End of the transformers movie back in the 80s, had a really cool sounding song.

Used to be wearing trenchcoats and being in black was cool. Though now people stereotype you because of it. So until this culture changes *which this man trying to sound like girl culture is looking unlikely to change*, I'll have to go back to wearing my uber-sexy barney *pbs version* costume. Nobody can stereotype me then, eh?

Linkin Park is not emo, you pile of rancid filth. It's rock.

And everyone, go to www.freewebs.com/youdontknowemo

Linkin Park is what started all of this mess.

Linkin Park are not emo whatsoever. What makes them "emo"?

Everything they sing has a depressing meaning.

So what? MILLIONS of other songs have depressing meanings. And no, not every song at all.

Everything I've heard from them is depressing.

Then obviously you're a depressed person, because EVEN MY MOM listens to them daily and she most certainly doesn't find them depressing.

What a waste of a wall of text. "Emo", which doesn't really exist anymore, was started by Fugazi and Rites Of Spring. Go listen to them and then tell me that Fall Out Boy is emo.

Maybe because unlike alot of people who listen to whatever is mainstream and don't even know what their singing to I actually listen to lyrics.

I'm in the minority here because this board hates popular music.

Samwel_X

No your not, Nirvana and Guns N Roses are as popular as they come.

Well fine but everyone hates Green Day just because they used to be on MTV.

You are entitled to you opinion, don't let other peoples comments change it. I don't like Green Day simply because they are on MTV, I dislike them because I don't like the type of music they make. But again, its all opinions.

Yeah, it bothers me when people decide they dislike a group simply because they are extremely popular and mainstream.

Yeah, I agree. However I'm not sure as to the OPs age, because if I remember correctly Green Day received substantial air play on the radio and MTV back in the mid 90s, back then I'd say they had significant success.

green day was already getting attention even before they signed on a major label

Lets clear this up. Non of the bands that the OP has mentioned are actually emo. Emo does not mean depressing lyrics, it does not mean silly hair cuts and wrist slashings.

Emo is a genre of music that is short for Emotional Hardcore. As I have already said this gets little radio airplay and is anything but popular. Pop-punk is a genre that is popular and has adopted an emo-style appearance. Its highly likely that the OP has never actually heard emo music. So I'm saying find some City of Caterpillar or something and listen to it. That is emo.

Emo is not my thing, but I do know what it is.

i like the "emo" look, but not the attitude, all emo is, is being depressed, you shouldn't generalize emos that way cuz a lot of people get depressed over little things, like breaking up, ect.

I don't listen to music with bad lyrics, in fact the first thing I do when I buy a CD is listen to the whole album and read the lyrics as I go through it. There are far more depressing bands. Stop being ignorant.

I know you don't know who those bands are, because I was telling you to listen to real emo. I never said Fall Out Boy was emo, I was implying that most people think Fall Out Boy is emo. AOL Music has an Emo genre, and they're on it! Sickening.

Most of what people consider emo is not emo. Linkin Park is not emo, just because a song has a sad meaning does not make it emo. By that reasoning then country music with a sad meaning is actually emo, obviously that is wrong. So if a rock group makes a sad song they are still a rock group. People either need to learn to properly categorize music, or they need to stop judging genres as a whole since it is clear, most for the public cannot categorize most music.

I realise that. But they didn't get the emo trend into mainstream because they sound much more different to Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy which people consider emo.

Do i have to spell it out for people or something, for the last time, in the early 90's grunge was the emo of that time except it wasnt as sad or gloomy as it is today, and Nirvana who are the ones that changed the entire genre of grunge started that trend. If anyone knows about Nirvna then they would know exactly what i am talking about. Just because they didnt bang the listeners heads with things like suicide and such, they were always hidden in the lyrics, and youl find that in almost every single Nirvana song.

Why can't we all just go back to the days of how elvis was king of rock? We can mostly all agree that was great rock. I'd much rather here something like 'love me tender' at the end of say a movie than 'dance dance' or something. Wait, then since elvis sang emotional songs like 'love me tender', wouldn't that make him the one that started emo? *laughs*

Samwel_X, can you just save this statement and then repost it in every thread that mentions something emo, i think it might help a lot of the peopel on this forum who know nothing (i'm no expert, i dont listen to real emo music (i dont listen to these bands people call emo either really) but i know quite a few real emo bands and have a slight amount of knowledge on the subject...i know just enough that peoples musical ignorance drives me up the wall...)

[QUOTE="mexicangordo"]You guys do know that Nirvana started the whole emo thing right? From a person who knows grunge rock like if it was his life, Nirvana was the first band to popularize emo, thats what grunge was at the time, a mix of metal and the blues with some punk influence. Of course it didnt have the sad tone that it has today but thats what grunge was, the emo of that time. I mean look at the smashing pumpkins early lyrics, how more emo could you get? The only difference is that grunge rock was actualy good. :PRoland1987

Nirvana emo?

Green Day emo?

Linkin Park emo?

Fall Out Boy emo?

Leanr what emo is.

[QUOTE=Samwel_X]

I'm glad I can confide in one person who is also against musical ignorance... which unfortunately has overrun this thread.

[QUOTE="mexicangordo"]Do i have to spell it out for people or something, for the last time, in the early 90's grunge was the emo of that time except it wasnt as sad or gloomy as it is today, and Nirvana who are the ones that changed the entire genre of grunge started that trend. If anyone knows about Nirvna then they would know exactly what i am talking about. Just because they didnt bang the listeners heads with things like suicide and such, they were always hidden in the lyrics, and youl find that in almost every single Nirvana song.mexicangordo

Nirvana was a rock band with powerful lyrics, end of story. They didn't have the emo image, tone in their music, ect.

I can instantly bet you dont know much about Nirvana, but o well, im not going to sit hear and argue with people who dont even know the music to begin with, all lthey know what emo is or better yet what they think it is are stuff like "linken park" or "MCR" but whatever floats your boat.

I recently saw some music video on VH1 with some emo band jumping around ina graveyard with emo clothes.Thats what I call emo.

My point excatly well im glad we work this out ;)

And you are what we all call ignorant. There is no such thing as emo clothes. What you're thinking of is "scene".

May not be, but people now stereotype things as such.

Guess what, just cause a lot of people think something is true doesn't make it a fact. PEopel can say the aforementioned bands are emo till they are blue in the face, it doesn't matter, they aren't. Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore is a genre of music, Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore is a genre of music, Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore is a genre of music, Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore is a genre of music, Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore is a genre of music, do you get it yet? Emo is not a stupid hair cut, tight clothes, and a boat load of self pity and wrist cutting, it isn't a sad with depressing lyrics, it isn't Fall Out Boy, it isn't Linkin Park, it isn't Panic! (i don't know why i am defending these groups, it isn't music i care for, but whatever). People see someone in a depressed mood and say "oh, they are so emo", they see someone with a ridiculous hair cut and tight jeans and say 'they are so emo' they are using the term incorrectly, Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore is a genre of music it isn't a hairdo or a set of clothes. This officially marks the end of me responding to the ignorant in this thread, i'm spent.

Don't be so ignorant please. Going by your metality of depressing lyrics = emo, you could say Nirvana are Emo... are you saying a song called "I hate myself and I want to die" does have depressing lyrics or a depressing title? then going by your stupid mentality it is emo. Blink 182 have a similar sound to Fall out boy and Green Day, hell I think Green Day even supported Blink 182 on one tour. They are the same type of music.

Learn what emo really is before you make these stupid threads. And if this doesn't get through i really give up.

EDIT: and for the record Nirvana aren't at all emo, I'm just pointing out how stupid your mentality is.

It just came outta nowhere it seems. One day Guns N' Roses and Nirvana are ruling the rock world then when Cobain died and GNR broke up everything went emo.All this Green Day, LP, MCR, Fallout Boy, nu-metal bologna, and so on.How did all this happen? Now its suddenly "cool" to cut yourself, dress inblack, and be depressed.jimmygrace

I don't know/care about emo (I assume it's a fad), but Nirvana and Guns N Roses are just bad.

[QUOTE="jimmygrace"]It just came outta nowhere it seems. One day Guns N' Roses and Nirvana are ruling the rock world then when Cobain died and GNR broke up everything went emo.All this Green Day, LP, MCR, Fallout Boy, nu-metal bologna, and so on.How did all this happen? Now its suddenly "cool" to cut yourself, dress inblack, and be depressed.Jenova_Flare

I don't know/care about emo (I assume it's a fad), but Nirvana and Guns N Roses are just bad.

GNR oozes awesomeness!

MCR, Fallout Boy, Panic at the Disco, all these bands all dress similar and their considered emo by tons more people than me.

They dress emo, have an emo tone, and have emo lyrics.Nuff' said.

Read this... i'll post it again just for you...

Pop-punk is a genre that is popular and has adopted an emo-St_yle appearance. Its highly likely that the OP has never actually heard emo music. So I'm saying find some City of Caterpillar or something and listen to it. That is emo.

Emo is not my thing, but I do know what it is.

Now read it again carefully and never make a stupid thread where you don;t listen to reason again.

Pop-punk is Blink 182, some of RHCP music, The Offspring, and so on.Nothing at all similar to emo bands.

Emotional Hardcore is hardcore punk with emotional lyrics. Hardcore punk involves screaming and stuff. Pop-punk is Green Day and Fall Out boy. Live with it.

MCR had a video with some pale emo woman and a coffin.Everything LP has is something about dying, or the world ending, or some garbage with a depressing tone. And Fallout Boy is as emo as they come.

My Chemical Romance had a video with a woman wearing makeup lying in a coffin.
Linkin Park released one or two songs about death.
Fall Out Boy released nothing emo at all.

Truth.

Well then, I've said it a number of times. I've explain what was wrong with your statements, but you can't seem to get simple concepts... so I give up. I guess for some ignorance is bliss.
