And yet, games that are only 8hours feel like really short? When I watch a movie, no matter how interesting, I start feeling tired towards the end of the show(even Dark Knight or Return of the King).

But, the funny thing is that I can play a game that doesn't exactly have much storyline or anything, and basically stand around doing nothing for hours... Is it a psychological thing or what?
Did you come to the same feeling(about movies feeling long while games feeling short, despite the obvious difference in length)?

Most people don't play an 8 hour game straight through. I am never bothered by a 3+ hour film. As long as I enjoy the film as a whole, It doesn't matter.

Passively taking in story is an innately different narrative experience than participating; movies are "lean back" experiences, games tend to be "lean forward" experiences. Additionally, 8 hours of game by no means is 8 hours of story. An 8 hour game probably has quite a bit less than the 3 hours of narrative content the movie would have.

Maybe because you're used to watching movies that last an hour and a half.

Because when watching a movie you participate only emotionally while just watching the action unfold.

In a videogame you are part of the action as you get to be in the place of the protagonist.

Pandora's temple pissed me off greatly.

I know it was just a bit repetetive, but I found the story much better in no1 and it had better scenes like walking on the cliff while seeing Ares throw rocks at tiny ant-sized soldiers, plus I liked Pandora's Temple cause it really felt real for me.

Anyway... :P

Nope. No caffeine either. I was kinda out of it by the end, though, which is probably why I needed about a dozen tries for the final boss. I kept sending my player character (who was a mage) in to do melee attacks while keeping my tank back and trying to cast spells with him

My claim appears to be viewed with incredulity by some. It's entirely true, though. It was the longest period I've ever been awake by a relatively large margin (almost a 24 hour margin, actually)

After my first full day of playing X3: Reunion, I went to bed, but I didn't sleep at all.I was in a state of half-consciousness, thinking incessantly about the game and what I would do next.

What was weird was that, in spite of my complete lack of sleep, I felt considerably more rested the next day than normal.

Had to take a nap after cIasses ended though. My mind was willing to keep going, but my body...not so much.

It definitely made the already challenging game of Baldur's Gate 2 even more challenging :P I don't really even remember much of the last ten or so hours of the game except my rather bizarre confusion while taking on the final boss :P

Probably a lot of reasons, but one is that we are conditioned to expect movies to generally be shorter than that, and games to generally be longer. It's a matter of expectation. I think it also comes down to feeling burned when paying $50 for a game and not feeling like you got many hours of entertainment for the level of investment. For example, I bought Beyond Good and Evil for $5 on Steam. Great game, but short. If I'd paid $50 for it, I'd have been pretty annoyed at its length. Then of course there is the obvious point of a game basically forcing you to concentrate on it.

Well, let's hear your thoughts on the subject matter!

well if you insist, the reason 3 hour movies seem longer than playing through an 8 hour game is because watching a movie is passive observation...just sitting there and taking in information, looking and listening...where playing a video game for an extended period of time is active observation...you are taking in information but you are actively doing things to acquire the information....thus keeping you engaged will usually keep you interested and attentive longer than just sitting there and having a one-way experience.

Because in a videogame you are involved in the action and physically doing something.Instead of sitting there like a vegetable.

A really good movie tends to make me want it to never end.Sway-
Subconsciously yes, but you still feel kinda 'tired' towards the end.

An 8 hour is not usually played in one sitting. If 3 hours of game playing feel shorter than 3 hours of movie watching, it's because the former is active participation while the latter is passive observation.

If I'm paying 10 times the price of a movie ticket for a game, I expect 10 times the content.

I've never really had a problem with long movies as long as they keep me entertained. I'm watching the movie because I have nothing else to do, it might as well take up as much time as possible.
