Warning: I don't mean to offend anyone, but I will use some sarcasm to exagerate my point, and it may seem like flaming, but I don't believe it is... Sorry if you do find this offensive, and if you do, feel free to try to explain yourself...

Anyway, at work today I was really thinking of how so many people seem to be super massively huge metal fans on gaming forums... And I've started observing their habits, and it's just really annoyed me.

Firstly, when there is a thread about other music they always seem to hop in and say metal is 1,000x better and the genre being discussed (mostly hip hop) isn't even music. They always feel the need to say this. Also, they always need to have some insane metal avatar, and signature to show off their metal-ness (for some reason music seems to be the inspiration for 70% of people's avatars...I've done this too).

Thirdly, take this scenario (which really annoys me). In some metal or music thread people always try to list bands that no one else has heard of to make it seem like they are super cool, or in the circle, or informed or whatever...so say someone is like Children of Bodog (yeah it's bodom or whatever, either way) and usually this person has a super high post count too, and someone lower who thinks post count makes you godly starts an inner-thread one-on-one conversation with this dude (really annoying itself), like OMG they sound uber cool, what album should I get (aka steal), and they say something super crazy like "Acid rain on Mexican skeletons" or some crap.

Then, there is the other type who is hardcore into all the stuff that went out of s tylebefore they were even born (Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Zeppelin, Ozzy).... and is huge on that crap, and is always like "Modern music sucks, numetal sucks, scream metal sucks, hip hop sucks, everyone sucks".

I've noticed this on every big forum I've ever been on. It's like the "in thing" to be a part of the super awesome hardcore, long hair, guitar playing, pot smoking, not caring about school, metal group, and they want to show it off constantly to be recognized as part of this group.

I myself was in this group to a degree, hence the name TallicaFan...Way back in high school I was a huge metal fan, listening to nothing but Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Nightwish and such, but it quickly wore off, and I'm really glad. Now I guess for some reason I've come to absolutely hate the genre, but it's not so much the hate on the genre that made me make this thread, but rather the dislike of those who make it seem like metal is godly, and every other genre and every other person just sucks....

I agree with the "I like this band that you've never heard of" comment. apparently it makes them feel really cool to like a band that nobody has ever heard of.

I'm a big fan of metal, but I don't diss other types of music. I like a lot of different stuff, from metal, to rap, to cIassical. but metal is the most prominent genre on my zune.

Me? I don't know....It's just a really huge trend I've noticed on gaming forums. There are smaller ones, like posters replying to EVERY post in a thread they made, even when many posts are the same, just to get their 500,000 post count and such (that also annoy me), but this one has been bugging me for years, and I just wanted to put my thoughts out there, so that maybe, just maybe, some who do this, or don't notice it, think about it for a second.

That's normal...You can like metal, but some (particularly those on gaming forums) seem obsessed with it, and that annoys me. There don't seem to be people doing the same with hip hop, or anything else, it's usually metal that really gets people...But there was this guy on one forum who was obsessed with The Band forever, and always posted them in any thread, even if it wasn't about rock....

The whole underlying theme of discovering a band before the mainstream does make people feel like they are real fans. Quite silly, but understandable.

I find that its a lot of teenagers who are fans of metal. it makes them feel bad ass.

You find that a lot of older people's tastes have mellowed out some, or they try to listen to metal to make themselves feel young again

Hmm I've noticed that there are way more metal fans than there are hip-hop, R'n'B or indie fans. They even outnumber the wannabe emos.

I get more annoyed with the hip hop obsessives. Thes that think its funny to start beating up a random person in there local park but go crying unfairness when the boyfriend of the girl they just hit almost beats them to death. Ok to far off-topic. But yer the hiphop obsessives annoy me more but that might be because there in shorter supply. I can see what you mean and it is in a way a fad. I think it comes with the teenagers/young adults wanting to be diffrent. But they end up in large groups of the same.

I wouldn't say that's hip hop's influence, but more poverty, in my opinion. Hip hop doesn't create thugs... It can create those who mimmick (dress hip hop, try to talk it, try to act it, but wouldn't classify as "gangster"...AKA those in high school who do that, but live in the suburbs. Kind of the opposite of metal obession (automatically growing your hair out and wearing black band shirts all the time because you started to like metal), and I find both (hip hop and metal obsession) annoying.

It's not so much about the music, but what you do with it.

"Acid Rain on Mexican Skeletons"

TallicaFan2005

Best album title EVAR

I love music in general, and that includes Metal. I guess you'd say I'm the type who likes Metallica, Megadeth and Iron Maiden. My favourite type of music is classic or hard rock, like Queens Of The Stone Age, or Thin Lizzy. I also have favourites such as Foo Fighters and Muse.

I also like some artificial music, I'm not sure about genres when it comes to dance, or trance or whatever..

I think people who use music as labels are embarrassing.. If someone looked at me, they wouldn't have a clue what I like. People say Hip-Hop and Rap is crap, but that's no different from Rock really..

Mainstream Rock = Processed Crap

Mainstream Rap = Processed Crap

It all comes down to taste, but the majority of us use music as a way of segregating people. If you don't like a particular genre, that's fine but there is no need to make a big fuss about it.. In the defense of Rap, you NEED to go Underground to find anything worth listening to, at least in my experience. Listen to Tupac if you want music with meaning. The man was a genius.

Metal in the mainstream is regularily bashed. So are video games, and the nerds who play them. Quite often they're the same people, and they like the take pride in what they listen to wherever they can. I have no problem with someone promoting the kind of music they listen to.

Hate is on all sides of this, so the metal heads aren't the only ones to blame. However, I agree that it gets really annoying when someone starts a thread to bash a certain genre. People should be open minded, listen to what they want to, and let others do the same.

Knowing about indie bands is a good thing, bragging that you know a band that's not signed, and pretending that it makes you better than everyone else is not. I like to promote bands that few have heard of in hopes of getting their name out there. Almost all of my favourite music comes from bands on indie labels. If everyone all listens to the same bands then pretty quickly it turns into a bunch of people arguing about which AC/DC album they like the most. Not cool. Not cool at all.

1. I chose my sig and avatar because its a band I love. I don't wanna put a videogame sig because I don't play the often enough, I have no other ideas so ya..

2. I only really discuss bands with my friends.. I don't go posting all the super underground bands I know on forums just for the sake of being "cool"

3. To all those who think metal is just random shredding and roaring... its not!

4. I only bash gansta rap because its degrading.. I am aware however that there is good rap and hip-hop out there and I don't bash it.

Just because you have a keyboardist doesn't mean they don't qualify as metal. Several metal bands I listen to have keyboard/piano works and it still sounds metal.

I agree, but the way they used it, made it so un-metalish. It was very 80s, not Iron Maiden 80s, but pastel suit 80s, mixed with hard rock. I dunno, maybe it could be called metal, whenever I think of metal, I think of the really loud stuff, so I don't know a whole lot about it.

Ya know not all metal fans hate hip-hop just to be trendy. I hate hip-hop because it's way to simple for me. I'ma musician and I listen to the instruments because it makes sense to me and percieve as just more than a wall of sound. When I listen to hip hop I just get kinda bored of the simple repeating beat.

But anyway I agree with pretty much all you said here. Especially the part where you talk about people being all hardcore about the old stuff. Like there's this dude that just doesn't shut the hell up about Metallica. He can describe Cliff Burton's death with so much detail you'd swear he was there. Thankfully I'm smart enough to avoid making most of these mistakes haha.

So... do I have to defend my music taste? Metal is a genre that is not so easy to come into, and you must have some higher than usual degree of interest in music to really be a fan of it. Therefor, metal heads often take more pride in their musical taste, because it's not that common. It gives them an identity they feel comfortable with. And if you listen to the same bands often, you get tired of them, and you look for similar bands. That's when the more "obscure" bands come in to play, and I always find it fun bumping into some "obscure" band that really creates some kickass music, and eventually makes me a fan.

Metal tells a story, Name me one Hi Hop song that tells a good story other then about ho's and drugs

TallicaFan2005

That is pretty much me!:lol:I wouldn't put Zeppelin and AC/DC as metal, though. Also, I listen only to some metal bands from the 80's.

Regarding the quote about people posting obscure band names...it's part of my quest to bring good bands to light, unless I do feel like being a jerk and listing a bad band that no one's heard of. For example: Baroness. Great band, love them, will post them in WAYLT threads or 'looking for music' threads for at least another few months. When I'm being a jerk: Vlad Tepes. Is famous for usually only releasing 300 LP's (in analog format) for each album, and their albums have sold for as much as $10,000 on eBay. However, they have some of the most intentionally bad production ever, and in general are just a mediocre kvlt BM band. I already listen to a lot (A LOT) of music as it is, so I feel that only the really good bands should get my free advertising. I can't help it if most of those bands are somewhat hard-to-find.

I put Iron Maiden in my sig because in my honest opinion they're a quality band. I don't feel the need to "show off", I just like expressing my interests in bands....

TallicaFan2005

Wow, you were NEVER a metal fan to begin with. Actual metal fans know tons of obscure bands or bands which people aren't familiar with only because they love to seek ought new genres within the music and expand thier pallettes, not to seem badass but obviously in your mind, it's purely to seem cool. You obviously, have stuck to bands which are played on the radio 24/7 such as Metallica and Iron Maiden. Since when were AC/DC and Zeppelin metal? You don't even know who CoB is, a fairly popular metal band which is pretty damn sad. I've been listening to metal for 8 years, from 13-21 and although I do get tired of a particular band after a while, listening to a new riff in an ACTUAL metal band still sends shivers down my spine. Yes, I don't go out of my way to dress as metal as I did in my youth but still wear metal t's for the most part. Americans into metal-or those who even think they are- as you think they know metal by hearing Iron Maiden and Metallica (something Megadeth) when in all honesty, you have no clue. Metalheads are undoubtedly of the most passionate about thier music, buying up more music cds by thier artist than any other genre and searching for more. When people in a metal tshirt pass one another, they both knod in each others direction and occasionally start up a chat. How many times does this happen with other genres and how is this a fad.

In summation you were never into metal and you have no right in the world to criticize those who are into it.

I'm glad metal is not a fad. It would certainly ruin it. Let only metalcore be the 'popular' one. D:

I should mention that the reason I have a 'metal' avatar is because that dude is playing an 11-string bass, which is sick. And no, it's not a Chapman Stick, that's a straight-up 11-string bass.

A. Hardcore isn't metal, it's a fusion genre.

b. If it was metal, it would be the only metal worth listening to:)

There is a distinction between Hardcore and Metalcore, you know..Metalcore largely contains bands who look at At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul as the ultimate album, and the melody almost never strays from the same base note, and in general is way more angsty. Hardcore is a different kind of music almost entirely, and much better.
