Why is Twilight so popular?

I haven't seen the movie but everything I've been reading online completely trashes the movie, as well as the author of the books. Everything in the book contradicts itself, there are numerous grammatical errors, and the so-called "Vampires" in this Movie apparently sparkle when they go out in the sunlight. People really need to research on Vampires before they start writing a book. I mean, who at the age of 36 doesn't know what a Vampire is? It's embarrasing to the point of even getting a midnight release.. =/

So back to my original question, what makes this series so popular?

Also known as the "Potter" effect, but at least those books had a great story and an interesting world.

This. Personally it sickens me to no end when I hear girls talk about it saying "Amagawd this teh bezt movie eva!!!! Edward is so hawt!!!!111!!!"

But they can waste their time as much as they want :P

My hypothesis has always been that people needed something to move on to after Harry Potter had ended, and they chose Twilight, as it had already garnered some attention in the preteen girl world prior to its explosion. What's sad is it's not just 16 year old girls and whiney emo dudes that are into it, a friend of mine loves the books and wants to see the second movie. Makes me sick.
