[QUOTE="Katafran"]

I was bitten by a daschhund when I was ten, but it didn't get put down.

Jandurin
Weird. I thought that was sort of... what was supposed to be done?

Well, from what I can remember, and it's hazy, because the dog had an owner(it was tied up in it's front lawn and I was walking home from the bus stop) it didn't have to get put down. It almost took my thumb off, though, and I had to get a rabies shot in my stomach because it wasn't current with its vaccines. All I know is that I saw it about a month later still tied up in the front lawn. >:(

Don't you need a license for pitbulls anyway?-Misanthropic-
Nope. Do you need a license to own a horse?

[QUOTE="Katafran"][QUOTE="-Misanthropic-"] Chihuahuas are not that strong though.Pitbulls are very powerful... and they don't let go :P

But what about Labs, Chows, Rottweilers, Dalmatians, and any of the other big, powerful breeds that are known for aggressiveness?

What about them? I think Rottweilers and Chow Chows are quite dangerous too... though I'd keep them over a pitbulll any day.

Well, horses are big, and some of them are very nasty. A horse could escape its fencing and get hit by a car killing everyone in said car (they're much more massive than deer). Yet, no license. Why would you think you need a license for a type of dog? The only specific thing about pit bulls is that they're banned in some areas. A county near me doesn't allow them.

So should owners have to muzzle those breeds, too? I do agree with you that these are scary dogs, and they're the reason why I carry mace and a big stick when I walk my dogs, but if these dogs have good owners, there isn't an issue. I think the problem lies within the culture of the people who regularly seek to own a pitbull or a rottweiler.

Not to mention that a stud horse will kill for no reason. They scare me more than pitbulls. Especially when I'm on my lady-time.

If you're going to require licenses for owning pit bulls, then what about knives, tractors, other dogs, etc. Just what we need is more pieces of paper telling us what we can and can not own.

There is license for certain knifes here... and as far as I know certain dogs too.Its going to be different in America and Canada though... Obviously we can't have licensing for tractors here.Ireland relies too much on agriculture for that...

I see what you mean yes and I agree with it on most things.Heavy prohibition never works... but some things I believe need to be handled with care.

Agree. Which is why some pit bulls (and other dogs) are good and some are bad. How much care the owner takes in protecting others from the animal (and teaching the animal) and how much they care for the animal's needs.

I agree that it depends on how the dog is raised. However, I know their jaw can lock onto things and that's always something that would keep me a little weary of them...

Because they are the number 1 culprit for dog attacks against children an infants?

Yeah, bloody great breed of dog you have there. They're abhorrent creations of artificial selection bred to fight. Their genes should be eradicated from the face of the earth.

sinlesswolf

SIGH.

Pitbulls were bred to fight.. nothing else. but as all dogs they will be very loyal to there owners that isnt to say they won't flip and attack someone outside or in your family. they are a dangerous dog if not cared for properly. also Red-XII it isn't just pitbulls, all dogs can become aggressive towards infants no matter what the breed.. they dont recognise them the way they would an adult.

Have any of you ever seen a Pitbull attack another dog? have you had to frantically try and stop it from ripping said dogs face off? because trust me when you see them and recognise there strength you would know why they are a dangerous dog. and this is in reference to first hand experience not tv or videos.

no, but my parent's black lab/boxer attacked my girlfriend's (now my) pit bull when they first met. The pit bull was very politic and backed up and was perfect, the lab had to be pulled back. they made friends afterward, though

You know I'm pretty sure that a lot of dog attacks that are reported by the media mistakenly identify the perpetrating dog as a pit bull, I'm almost certain there was a case were pit bull reportedly attacked a child but was in reality a Labrador, I've also heard of other such cases.

In any case, it is incompetent owners (and the fear mongering media), not the breed, that are cause of the pit bulls bad rep.

There is also no scientific proof that pitbulls are more aggressive due to their "fighting" (they were actually not bred to fight, but to bait bulls) genes.

Also the whole jaw locking thing is a myth, google it.

Well trust me they are a very powerful and dangerous breed in that respect. and need to be treated with respect for that reason. yes i believe they can be a very friendly dog but they still need to be viewd in the sense of what they can potentially do and never be left unattended with anyone outside the family or children. i own a ratweiller and although it is a very friendly and nice dog i still know what it is capable off and would never let it roam the streets or leave it alone with my younger sister or people outside my house. it is the same for any dogs, they all need to be viewed by what they can do but some are more dangerous than others and pitbulls are up there with the most dangerous of them.

Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs, but unfortunately for them(and us), idiotic tough-guys get them as something of a status symbol, and end up raising them poorly. It's sad that people still want these dogs exterminated when they're some of the nicest, well-tepered dogs around. Linky linky

St. Bernards and Old English Sheepdogs are inherently more aggressive by nature than pitbulls. If you buy a pitbull from a reputable breeder who is not breeding them for dog fighting, you'll end up with a big suck. Not only that but the owner's treatment of the dog and handling has more to do with human injuries than the nature of the dog itself. You only see irresponsible owners being fined or sued for damages done by their dogs.

The pitbulls aren't the issue, the breeders and owners are.

Pitbulls are great. I have two of them and when a stranger comes to the door they welcome him and don't threaten him in any way. Their also cowards when you try to mess with them. Their great dogs. If you raise them right then theres no worry.

Ok first of all you can't breed aggression into a dog that's like saying you have bred your child specifically for war reality is one has to have training to become these things and it is up to the owner to create what it is they want there dog to be or their child. saying an animal is bred for aggression is just bad information.

Also pitbulls are just like any other dog they respond to training and they above all respond extremely well but that is because that's what dogs do they listen because they are a submissive animal.

Also you can put any streanger in any room with any type of dog and there is going ot be something happening becuase dogs are loyal and they know that strangers are bad and that they need to protect their masters it's just how they are or even just how people are when some stranger is in the same room as you I would think you would get mad if that room is in your home and it being a stranger and all.

Attacks on children is high because parents don't watch their children and train their dogs to see children as smaller beings that can be hurt and that goes with any dog.

And yes I had a pitbull and yes that's why I beleive this my pitbull was trained to leave children alone and was afraid of anything smaller than himself because he new smaller things got him into trouble. He played all the time with our ferret who would bite him and play just like any other dog with him and he understood how ot play with the ferret becuase of his training.

NOT ALL PITBULLS ARE BAD JUST LIKE NOT ALL HUMANS ARE NOT BAD IT JUST DEPENS ON THEIR TRAINING.

I honestly can't say whether the Pitbull is the "awesomest breed of dogs ever", since I've never really been around Pitbulls nor owned one. I think a lot of people are misinformed about this breed...I recently got a puppy that is a Boxer mix. Whenever she goes out on walks, we get some curious onlookers. Instead of people saying "oh, what a cute dog!", we get "oh, your dog is a Pitbull?"

I have nothing against Pitbulls, but rather, against the people that constantly own Pitbulls for the wrong reasons.

He's funny and quite intelligent too. He likes strangers just as much as me so he's no use as a guard dog and he doesn't mind if you take his food away because he knows he'll get it back

My cat is better. He owns my neighbourhood and scares away all the other cats.
