[QUOTE="samuraiguns"][QUOTE="Sajedene"] How do you reason with a country that its governing body ALLOWS a law such as this to pass?

reyad-u

I thought people get "elected"/"chosen" for this sorta things...secretary of state? maybe? I myself does not know how to reason with countries...I never had to do it.

If women are allowed to get raped then I doubt they would have any voice over who gets voted/chosen. Seems like its the men who vote and if it doesn't effect them then they probably wouldn't care. Chances are its the women that will be cooking so I'm sure they can slip something into their mouth.

I kinda worded it wrong, :P I just realized that. I meant our secretary of state should take care of this.

[QUOTE="reyad-u"][QUOTE="Sajedene"] Actually, I'm dead serious. When a country clearly violates human rights - do we not do something about it? SHOULD we not do something about it?EmpCom

I agree that we should do something about it but invading isn't exactly the best thing to do.

That and you cant invade a counrty you are already in fighting one enemy

I think you guys need to read up on the difference of having a military presence in a country... to what an actual invasion is.

I think it's time we invade them and tell them how to run things.... Sajedene
How exactly is invading another sovereign nation and foisting, by force, your own asinine beliefs on their populace supposed to help?

When the norm violates human rights... yes! When it is the norm to put people of jewish faith in internment camps and starve them and kill them for their religion, do we not do something? When a country think it is the norm to abolish a certain tribe because they are considered inferior, and clubbing and stoning them in the middle of the street is considered normal and ENCOURAGED... should we not do something about it? When a country LEGALLY allows its men to starve its women for refusing to have sex with them, we should just sit here until something, or someone is so greatly wronged that we actually feel upset enough to go out to the streets, then maybe we should do something. Awesome.

Amazing... then please to everyone who posted outrage in this thread. Do not act like you are so offended or outraged by something that is happening in a country far away when not a single one of you is ready or willing to do anything about it.

If you think this is bad check the original bill: "The original version obliged Shia women to have sex with their husbands every four days at a minimum, and it effectively condoned rape by removing the need for consent to sex within marriage." And to think that the conservative Shia is that extreme...

I think this really exposes the origins of the "Institution" of marriage in religious context. A form of sexual enslavement.

I wish I could agree with you, but I don't think we have the power to fix this. We already proved our lack of ability in Iraq, when we weren't making an issue of religion. Just because it's the right thing to do doesn't mean we are capable of doing it.

I'm not against your idea that we should do something, but what should we do?

How are you supposed to stop this with military force? Seeing as this now become legal, this might have been tradition for a long time. Not going to stop if you have a 3 months war where you remove the current government and make this illegal again.

We should do something, but what? This will need a lot more than a war, if you want one.

Yeah... kinda like how we did when Hitler butchered people... or when Japan raped and pilaged all the countries around them... THEN when America chooses not to "stick its nose in" so you say, in countries such as Sudan and Rwanda, when clear as day genocide is happening... other countries (usually the countries being raped) gets mad at US for not "sticking our nose in".

You entered WW2 because you were provoked via pearl harbour..... and no you should not stick your noise into people's business.. you are two towers down because of that.

Just wait a second, I feel quite strongly that we really should do something about this, but he problem is our governments will not want to upset a government were they have troops in active combat etc, and military action to remove the government and then appoint another one? Defiantly not gong to work, there is a democratic way of dealing with I just don't know what it is, I really do hope that the UN or any and all governments and country's do stand up to this.

Justify it all you want guys... the bottom line is, human rights are being violated, and rape has been made legal in a country. That is that. What we should or shouldn't do about it, or when we do act... I hope you realize and be glad that it is not your mothers or your sisters or your wives or girlfriends who have to deal with that.

Say what you say is so.... do we do the same thing and make that sad truth happen again and do nothing... ? Or should we do something about this? Or do we wait again until women in that country all become victims of rape?

I really am glad for that but I just cant see a solution in the short term, I think its going to take a while longer especially with out involvement in the country.

He was going down reguardless, the US contribution wasn't near the russian contribution even though russia pretty much had a hilter in power as well, the thing is the US in alot of conflicts do not quell them... they decide a winner, they make an enemy everytime they make a friend and it's not good for the country. I am surprised the afghans even bother making these laws and I'm even more surprised they have a stable government considering the current situation the country is in.

I really just want something done... rape and domestic violence are a very big deal to me. This is just NOT okay.Sajedene

Same. Although, there's nothing the US can do. The bill was passed quietly but legitimately with the approval of their president. Lets just hope that this decision gets overturned very quickly.

Actually, I'm dead serious. When a country clearly violates human rights - do we not do something about it? SHOULD we not do something about it?

What is human rights? Is our interpretation correct or is theirs correct? On whose authority can we force our beliefs onto others without making us look like total hypocrites? A person's version of what is right and wrong can greatly differ when in contrast with another person's morality.

Actually, I've already forwarded the news article to all of my sorority sisters and other alumni and we will probably have the active girls send out awareness flyers on campus the first day of school and have e-mailed the Women In Black organization to see what events they have planned.... what have you done?

If you are trying to justify rape and forced starvation of a human... please enlighten me. Regardless of country or religion or background... when is that ever okay?

I doubt the women are happy. When roughly 50% of the population are being attacked, that is, objectively, a violation of human rights.

I am not justifying rape and forced starvation. I'm just saying we are in no position to condemn their culture and promote ours. There is no such thing as inherent right and wrong, thinking that way makes it so.

I was thinking the same thing. Human rights for one person born from a certain culture is different from another. I think if we want to do something, we should support the activists that are against the law and put pressure on the government... But... That is what make some extremist groups hate the US. We want to change something, so we go there and say: "hello sir, i`m from the US. We believe that what you`re doing is wrong, so we are giving you 3 choices until you change your mind: invasion, embargo or use the media to make the world against you, your choice?"
