I wonder what would have happened if Hitler had been accepted in that Art school in Austria or if he had not been spared by a British soldier in World War 1.

Because America is the world basically. Every economy in the world, is pretty much controlled by the American economy. Even though the States aren't imperialistic, they're actually economically imperialistic. If the American economy collapses, so will everyone else. America abuses this power and ships out history books based on their history, not the country they are shipping to. This means that since the US has a few dirty little secrets behind WW1, they won't publish it in a history book.

MadVybz

I know but if your being taught about WW2.. i can't imagine why they wouldn't bring up WW1 and how it led to alot of things that brought about WW2 Hitler getting into power for example stemmed from WW1.

I've actually read one American history book on WW2, and it doesn't even explain Hitler's origins. The fact that he's Austrian (NOT German), and that he fought in WW1, and with the consequences of Germany losing the war, is what made his extreme motives. That, and the fact that he got rejected from art school by Jews. (That's why he hated them.) The American text books merely describe him as a madman that needed to be stopped. (well the text book I read, anyway)

That is quite... worrying. I mean WW1 was a major war that should be looked upon in as much regard as WW2.

It's actually REALLY pointless to even think about it, because you can't change the past. I know it sucks, but that's how life is.

Plus, there are so many variables. Just because Hitler may not have gotten into power, doesn't mean that somebody even WORSE than him wouldn't have. One of the communist parties or just plain terrorists could have, because at the time of Hitler's campaign, they were his competition.

WE are taught about World War1 here, I don't know what that guy is talking about. We never get taught about the revolutionary war or the civil war, we skip to the industrial revolution.

Twilight_King

Where are you from? I'm here in NY and we were taught about the Revolutionary war like every other day. The civil war we didn't cover much. Maybe once or twice in my life. I'm only 19 though.

i was forced to study the revolutionary war so much I can play it back in my head like a damn movie.

No idea, but I hate the NY education system regarding history. I learned about the American Revolution like every other year and the information I learned never changed. I learned it in 4th grade, 6 grade, 8th grade, Freshman, Junior and I went over it in a 1 class in college to make sure everyone else knew what the guy was going to talk about next.

Regarding WW2. I went over that maybe once for an extended epriod of time while only going over WW1 maybe for like 1-2 classes in HS.

Sadly, this is too true... I was hoping it would have changed since I left.

it also introduced the modern tactics of mobility and and the use of paratroopers instead of the old imperial trench wars

which is why the 1928 stock market crash affected everyone germany was dirt poor because of the Treaty of Versailles so they had nothing to lose which is why adolf hitler got elected in office. he did restore germanys economy and transformed them back into a superpower hense ww2 he was able to convice everyone that the treaty was unfair so they backed him up

in australia it is very important to us, mainly because of the battle for gallipoli and the battle of fromelles where we lost more than 5,000 men in a single day!, the main reason imo that ww1 isn't more "popular" than ww2 is that ww1 didn't have a good vs evil concept like ww2, the main opinion on hitler is that he and the nazis were pure evil, whereas imo there is no such thing as good and evil, if the nazis had won then they would have called the allies evil

The first World War interests me a great deal. Its just not as covered much because World War II overshadowed it and there are much more people alive today who experienced it. All the British "last one a few weeks ago", French, German, and Canadian vets have died. I know that there is at least one American veteran still alive, but I doubt he'll live much longer. The novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" and its film adaptions are about the WWI and they're great. The Lost Battalion is another WWI film worth watching.

I'll probably get modded or something ridiculous for saying this but in all truth and honesty, the OP's ignorance is quite overwhelming. He claims to know "too much" about World War II but doesn't even know who fought in World War I? I'm sorry but that's messed up and it would take the OP a long time to convince me he is in any way intelligent. As for World War I, it was a far more devestating war for casualties in Europe, the number of British casualties was absolutely crippling compared to World War II and Britain was emotionally traumatised (since the Royal family were related to the German Kaiser) and weakened severely economically. It really did change Britain. Its sad the OP actually writes a post in hot topic about not knowing something rather than just looking up wikipedia.

Because World War 2 outdid it in terms of strategy, scope, funding, technology, stakes, casualties and destruction

World War 1 involved tactics that led to locked up enemy lines. I guess some may see it as a "prequel" to WW2, because if not for how Germany was punished, World War 2 might've never happened

...still shocking that you don't know anything about it

It can be interesting, all it needs is a simple name change. World War II Origins. We talk about Hitler's early life as an impressionable young man who joined the German army. Everything changed when his family and girlfriend Aarika was killed by the French. He tried to get back at them. Kill as many French and British as he could, but he didn't feel any better. At the end of the war we see a picture of Hitler walking through a bunch of rising flames, which begin to form a Swastika.

"Kaiser? Where is Aarika?"

"It appears that she has been killed by the French, a Jewish division I believe."

"But that can't be true! I felt her! It just can't be true!

NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!"

Naturally this would just be one of the many subplots in WWII: Origins.

no where have i heard this before....

yeah it is sad that WWI doesnt get much coverage, since WWII wouldnt have even happened without it. Some of teh major reasons have been listed, but you guys forgot Colonialism. The scramble for africa and such played a big part for it. nothing was really solved by WWI though, most of the same things as well as grudges and such led to WWII. Which led to teh fall of colonialism, 2/3s of the worlds current countries didn't exist till after WWII.

Being Canadian I have a great deal of knowladge of both World Wars. I find it very irritating how ignorant Americans can be twords these subjects. I just can't understand how some feel that they are the only ones that have ever fought for freedom and won. It just dosen't make any sense to me.

yep, unfortantly, american is a nation of ignorence and apathy. doesn't look like that will likly change either. you should see teh crap they do for the Pacific war, you would think we were the only ones to fight there and did all the work. when it is really the opposite.

Why is WW1 so unknown to people? I dont even know who we fought in WW1. WWII is always the war that gets mass exposure in media whether its movies, videogames, documentaries, etc..... I honestly can say I have no idea what WW1 was like, heard they didnt even have tanks. Anyone in the same boat as me? Why is so underated? Even the Civil war is more popular.

This quiestion popped up in my head when i watched Xmen Origin wolverine during the Intro Scenes.

We fought Germany, Austria, and the Ottoman Empire (Turkey).

WW1 gets less exposure in films because the fighting conditions in the trenches were abysmal.

There were tanks, but they didn't appear until near the end of the war.

The war was actually of critical importance. I suggest you study history a bit more.

Being Canadian I have a great deal of knowladge of both World Wars. I find it very irritating how ignorant Americans can be twords these subjects. I just can't understand how some feel that they are the only ones that have ever fought for freedom and won. It just dosen't make any sense to me.

SamusFreak

yep, unfortantly, american is a nation of ignorence and apathy. doesn't look like that will likly change either. you should see teh crap they do for the Pacific war, you would think we were the only ones to fight there and did all the work. when it is really the opposite.

I was just thinking about that while I was outside having a smoke. They are call "World Wars" for a reason, Not "America's Wars"

Frankly I'm glad that the rest of us fought the Germans and didn't join them. There would be no U.S.A if that happened. :)

I can think of several reasons that it is less known.

1. It is over shadowed by its bigger brother WW2.

2. There was no true good or evil sides like WW2. Both sides for the most part were corrupt, and a good debater could even argue Britain was more evil than Germany (not saying the were).

3. The battles were for the most part repetitive. Once the trenches went down they stayed for years.

4. Tactics and strategy were down right terrible as European commanders at first tried to fight last centuries war. Heck they still had horse cavalry deployed.

5. It is simple older.

All that being said WW1 was still an interesting war as it was down right brutal and in general scummy.

Come to think of it though, WW1 still gets plenty of exposure in film.

Gallipoli, Lawrence of Arabia, and Dr Zhivago are three right off the top of my head.

But technically still the same War

2. There was no true good or evil sides like WW2. Both sides for the most part were corrupt, and a good debater could even argue Britain was more evil than Germany (not saying the were).

Who was the aggressor?

3. The battles were for the most part repetitive. Once the trenches went down they stayed for years.

Until the Canadians came along

4. Tactics and strategy were down right terrible as European commanders at first tried to fight last centuries war. Heck they still had horse cavalry deployed.

Machine guns were new to wars and they really didn't know what they were doing

5. It is simple older.

But still the same war

All that being said WW1 was still an interesting war as it was down right brutal and in general scummy.

And much tougher to fight than WWII

Because no one wants to admit that we could have killed Hitler in WWI ;)

But really it's probably just because it wasn't as bad as WWII. WWI was just trench fighting which kind of makes it boring to talk about. While WWII had the holocaust and the invention of the atom bomb. :)

It gets pretty decent coverage in school I would say, if you are talking about media such as movies and games, well the war was just kind of plan boring. The commanders had terrible strategies and not really understanding the new age of war they were coming upon. It was basically a battle of trenches and suicide charges until stand stills.

Wait, hold on! WW1 has the birth of Dogfighting, tanks and fire and manover tacticts. It has the use of chemical weapons. It has lot's of interesting stuff. WWI is in every way just as interesting and important as WWII.
