[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"]I have considered joining the marines.. I am in shape, but my mental state is unstable atm.. WhiteKnight77
How likely is it that a new Marine Recruit would be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, at the moment? How about the non-active bases in Japan, South Korea, and Germany?
Straight out of boot camp, you wouldn't be going anywhere. You have schools to attend depending on what MOS you join for or assigned just prior to graduation from boot camp. If you have good enough scores on the ASVAB and can get a technical MOS, the better off you would be and could use in the private sector after you get out of the military. If I had been smart while I was in, I would have taken night courses with Embry-Riddle so I could get an A&P license so I could work on aircraft after I got out (the FAA requires to have said license). Jet engine mechanics are usually well behind the lines or are on a ship instead of at the front.
Units on Okinawa rotate to and from the island. It used to be at Futemna, squadrons came from the Continental US and squadrons from Hawaii went on WestPacs (cruises on ships), but that changed shortly after I left in 84. I would suppose land units do the same thing at Camps Butler, Schwab, Hansen, Courtney, Foster or Kinser.
Would you ever re-enlist? Just to be sure, were you a marine or a soldier?
