I like the idea of joining the miliatry from a naive perspective. The idea of traveling to different parts of the world and egaging in battle seems exciting. However, from a realistic perspective, it's quite frightening to me. I'd hate to return deformed or disabled as a result of an attack by the enemy. Now, I know that joining the military doesn't necessarily mean that you'll experience first-hand violence or engage in actual warfare, but it is probable. Anyhow, what are your thoughts? Also, which branch would you join? I'd join the U.S. Marines. On another note, do military personnel only have body armor for the chest area? How about the face or anywhere else?

I'd like to join the military, just to try serving my country instead of leeching off of it. I don't think I am going to join, though..because I'm lazy, and I'll always be lazier than I have willpower to get fit.

I got pretty far in pursuing entrance into the Naval Academy but am so glad I dropped it; I would not have been happy nor would I have been a good fit for their needs.

Well I would do it because of the training since it helps you get a nice healthy body and can in turn help you achieve a healthy life. The discipline which helps you be more organized and the benefits, I've heard if you finish your service you get like....sent to you from the goverment (don't know the actual word in english) I'm not that afraid of getting shot since, I can get shot while going to the mini market in my neighborhood at least in the military I would be branded as "hero" instead of "victim"

I'm actually planning on joining the military after my courses here at Uni are done.

I'll be old enough to apply for special forces direct training and with abit of luck and a crap load of effort i might get into the SASR after a few years

One thing I don't like about the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is the fact that they are entail guerilla warfare; they're not conventional. You have more of a chance of dying as a result of driving over an IED as opposed to dying in open combat. I wouldn't want to die that way and I'd feel very unsecure walking around or driving around because of the IEDs.

I was nearly enlisted into the Marines, but I decided against it. I don't like the idea of being controlled by others to do things I don't support. Granted, there's more to it than that, but at this time, I've made my choice.

Yeah, I'd probably join the military to develop certain skill sets on the taxpayer's dime, then get out and make quite a bit of money applying them in the private sector.

Thats what it was like in most wars but replace IEDs with land mines. But i think the only way i would join the military is if the US was invaded by someone.

Not as a soldier (or in any combat unit), but possibly in a non-combat position. In all honesty though I can't think of a military position that would particularly interest me.

Where have you been? The US and US citizens have been attacked in some shape form or fashion for as long as the US has been around. If you are talking more recently, then from 1979 on when extremists stormed the US Embassy in Iran and took people hostage for 444 days when Jimmy Carter was President. Embassies are considered home soil for the nation it represents no matter where they are located. The Russian Embassy in Washington DC is Russian soil, not US, conversely, the US Embassy in Moscow is US soil.

Straight out of boot camp, you wouldn't be going anywhere. You have schools to attend depending on what MOS you join for or assigned just prior to graduation from boot camp. If you have good enough scores on the ASVAB and can get a technical MOS, the better off you would be and could use in the private sector after you get out of the military. If I had been smart while I was in, I would have taken night courses with Embry-Riddle so I could get an A&P license so I could work on aircraft after I got out (the FAA requires to have said license). Jet engine mechanics are usually well behind the lines or are on a ship instead of at the front.

Units on Okinawa rotate to and from the island. It used to be at Futemna, squadrons came from the Continental US and squadrons from Hawaii went on WestPacs (cruises on ships), but that changed shortly after I left in 84. I would suppose land units do the same thing at Camps Butler, Schwab, Hansen, Courtney, Foster or Kinser.

Here's the biggest kicker. For every 1 combat role there are 3-4 supporting roles. The chance you would end up doing any fighting or being in a position to be hurt is very unlikely. Remember our military is over 1 million strong and since the war in Afghanistan and Iraq a good chunk has left and others have come in and replaced them. So think of around 2 million people who have served in the military since the beginning and under 10k have died through 10 years of fighting.

Marines are soliders. The Marines are a branch of the military just like the Army, Airforce, and Navy.

Yeah I would the join the military. I was really going after it when I was in high school, but once school was over I just kept procrastinating it and it just never fell through. I'm not saying that I still won't join but I have a good job and I'm very close to my family and friends so it'd be hard to join. When I was in school I was considering the Army, now I'm more considering the National Guard if I was to join. I'd be quick to defend this country though. I have nothing but respect for the Soldiers.

EDIT: I'm sorry people, I meant that I have nothing but respect for the Troops.

Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, all branches of the military...everyone is Soldiers serving in those branches.

Ship out date is June 1st. BTW a lot of your military views are.. military=gun+combat. Not all roles are combat related (depending on branch). Yes you will be deployed to the desert, but not all jobs are directly to fight.

Soldiers are in the Army. Marines are in the Marine Corps.
